when the furnace is "full" i think that first is removed slag and then raw iron but my question is what happens in upper part of furnace. process of making iron still continues or new sinter is inserted after emptying furnace?

What is the state of the sinter as it moves down the blast furnace, but is above the molten pool at the bottom. Is there a column of solid sinter between the melt pool and top? Are loose particles of sinter blowing around in the mid body. What is physically, not chemicall,y going on in the mid body?

I have asked myself the same question many times without answer. Each time I have thought a little more about this and am now ready to make a guess. I know that the entire furnace is full of sinter from top to near bottom. It is not until near the tuyere that the iron drips from the sinter and falls to the bottom. I am guessing here, but it seems the thin shape of the furnace near the tuyere creates a clogging effect which holds up the sinter until the iron drips out and the coke is burned off. Then the entire stack of sinter slowly shifts downward until it gets clogged again and begins to burn off.
