What is bridge law?

Great information. South Carolina does have a bridge law it's 41ft I was pulled over at the SC/GA border and she said that I looked to far back and had to measure it. Was good and she did a level 2 and I was on my way

You didnt give the definition of what is bridge law, and a lot of people confuse bridge law with kingpin to center axle; which are two different things! Bridge law regulates how close tandems can be from kingpin to avoid concentrating all the weight in one point and damaging roads and bridges while kingpin to center axle regulates how far back you can slide the tandems and there is also overhang law!

No, the bridge law is the distance between the drive tires and the trailer tires, and the kingpin law is the distance from the kingpin to the rear axle center.

@@EricCutrer Read it again. Bridge law is shown in the chart on page A 15 of your atlas. Bridge Law is to spread out the weight on BRIDGES . I t is measured from FIRST to LAST axle of the truck. It has nothing to do with distance from kingpin.

@@williejaster Uh duh huh, read my comment again and you will see that's EXACTLY what I said. The bridge law refers to the distance between the axles, and the kingpin law refers to the distance from the kingpin to either the center of the trailer axles or the center of the rear axle. The easy way to be sure you're good on both is if you set your trailer axles by the kingpin law then you will also be good on the bridge law. If you set your rear center axle at 41' from the kingpin then you're legal in every state but CA, which is 40'. Yes there are some states where you can go back further than 41' but you will find that your weights will be good just about every time at the 41' mark.

Except me book says 40 feet for Calif..not 41 feet

What book was that and also the inches for example if it’s 41 ft or 40 ft it can be 40or 41 ft and less or has to be that exact number ?

Truckerhershey is right, The correct length in Ca is 40 ft, pin to last axle. The book is your Rand McNally Motor Carriers Atlas. Just checked in my 2024 edition, the latest available. The length in that chart is the maximum.
