What is Buddhism? What do Buddhists believe? That's what we'll find out today. In this video I'll explain Buddhism and we'll see who was the Buddha.
Buddhism the one of the world’s major religions. But outside of Asia it isn’t very well known. What is Buddhism? Who was the Buddha? What do Buddhists Believe? Thats what we’ll find out in this episode of Cogito.
We will learn about the life of the Buddha. The 4 Noble truths that he taught will be explained. The way to Nirvana, the Noble Eightfold Path will also be explained.
Have you ever wondered what’s the difference between Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism. You won’t have to wonder for much longer :D
While I have tried to explain Buddhism in a simple and understandable way it is important to note that I cannot cover everything in a ten minute video. If you would like to research more here are some links to the books I used to research this episode. Thanks you for watching.

I’m Buddhist. If you say Buddhism is not a religion, I’m good with that. If you say it is a religion, I’m good with that too. It all depends on your definition of religion. To me, religion is a guideline of what I should behave. It doesn’t matter whether you declare your as Buddhist or not. What matter is if you are a good son/daughter to your parents, if you are a good neighbor to your neighbourhood, if you are a good citizen to your country, most importantly if you are a good human to another being. If everyone is good, we can live in a world with less suffering.

I'm hindu but I think philosophy of budhha will make real internal peace in person. “Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.” This is the pseudonymous libertarian author John Galt in his Dreams Come Due: Government and economic, altering the Buddha’s words to suit his prejudice. An English translation of the Pali Kalama Sutta would go like this: don’t go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, ‘This contemplative [man] is our teacher.’ When you know for yourselves that, ‘These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness’ - then you should enter & remain in them.

The Buddha didn't actually say this. What he said was: "So, as I said, Kalamas: 'Don't go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, "This contemplative is our teacher." When you know for yourselves that, "These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness" - then you should enter & remain in them." -Kalama Sutta, AN 3.65

@SonofSethoitae 3 жыл бұрын
@Skeptical Cosmonaut They are not. The former says "go by your own reason and common sense" while the latter says the opposite " _don't_ go by conjecture or logical inference," and the Buddha goes on to say that you should keep in mimd things "praised by the wise". For the former, the threshold is how well a doctrine agrees with your personal faculty of reason, while in the latter the threshhold is whether or not a doctrine leads to "wellfare and happiness" when carried out.

For me, the way it coincides so accurately with scientific discovery is totally unique. The explanation of suffering originating from desire for more of what you've previously had is just how dopamine is handled by the brain; the pleasure of the spike and the pain of the subsequent desire is just what neuroscientists talk about in a very similar, more verbose fashion, and both understand the importance of the contrast of both; Buddhism in an intuitive and ontological way, and science in the epistemological, yet both conveying the same message. Very rare amongst belief systems, and there's many examples of this amongst the branches of this single tree of ideology. I would dare to say it is the healthiest "faith" to engage with, in many respects.

Another truth many have been deceived of: When you trust in God and cast your cares (worries, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts) upon him, they will be NO MORE! Know that there is power in the name Jesus Christ! His name casts out demons and heals! The world is wicked, evil, and of the devil. I too, was a wicked sinner of the world before I opened my heart to God. I am living proof of God's work and fruitfulness! He is an active God who hears the prayers of his! God's children are set apart (holy) and righteous. The devil is a liar that comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy; that includes your relationship with God. Open your heart to God, repent of your sins (he will forgive you), and let him direct your path. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands and purify your heart, lest you walk with the devil and follow him to hell.

It is indeed a philosophy and a great way to chose as its teachings doesnt contain supernatural, mythical things like other religions (no offense) but life itself. Specially patichchasamuppadaya (the theory that states every thing that happens has a reason). But my friend it is a little hard to go for the purest form of buddhism as most of it is corrupted and edited by ppl, specially monks for their personal gains.

I like that Buddhism doesn't feel narcissistic in the way other religions worship one/several beings and take their word as final and the whole truth (despite a lot of it being manipulated over centuries of religious warfare and just general Chinese whispers-esque oral tradition), but instead focuses mainly on how to better yourself and be a good person. It also isn't concerned with recruitment and seems to allow people to find their own path within the religion and take bits which work for them instead of ostracising them if they don't practice a certain aspect.

Sometimes u have to hit back u know? We do need to put ourselves above animals. Again, I might be getting these guidelines totally wrong but overall- I would probs adopt near enough all of these myself- unless I was in a very tough situation where there was no other option, I would see myself sometimes having to do the bad thing for the greater good. I.e. shooting a terrorist to save a bunch of other lives

Actually Buddhism doesn't have a god, I mean atheist means you don't believe in god. It's a moral guideline for people, you don't worship anyone, it's always you. There's no rule you must become a Buddhist to like their teachings. It's basically a teacher who guides you, you can choose to ignore the spiritual stuffs, I'm an atheist btw.
@Stuffingsalad
@Stuffingsalad 6 жыл бұрын
Of course, ever heard of a hypothetical? I'm an atheist because I am not convinced of any gods existing. I'm simply stating that if I had to choose a religion I'd pick this one- perhaps because in my eyes it already adopts a lot of my beliefs already.

I'm athiest too but the thing is, Buddhism is not a religion, it's a "way of life", a philosophy. It works entirely different. You can disagree with certain ideas and still be buddhist, Philosophical ideas always evolve aswell, so some ideas maybe be outdated or obsolete. Like people here are saying it's just guidelines, it's not telling you that you must do it a certain way to achieve nirvana, it's just telling you what things you could do to achieve nirvana just being a good person overall could help you achieve nirvana. There's no need to give up meat, meditate, become pacifist. Just be positive in life and don't cause harm to others. Philosophy and religion don't work the same. You can actually choose what you believe in Buddhism/Hinduism/Sikhism

@@samaradashwood1491 In theory, slavery in Islamic law does not have a racial or color component, although this has not always been the case in practice.[7] Slaves played various social and economic roles, from domestic worker to highest-ranking positions in the government like Sultan. They created some great empires in history including the Ghaznavid Empire, Khwarazmian Empire, Delhi Sultanate, Mamluk Sultanate of Iraq and Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and Levant. Moreover, slaves were widely employed in irrigation, mining, pastoralism, and the army. Some rulers even relied on military and administrative slaves to such a degree that they were considered above from the general public and sometimes they seized power.[8] In some cases, the treatment of slaves was so harsh that it led to uprisings, such as the Zanj Rebellion.[9] However, this was an exception rather than the norm, as the vast majority of labor in the medieval Islamic world consisted of paid labour by free persons.[10] For a variety of reasons, internal growth of the slave population was not enough to fulfill the demand in Muslim society. This resulted in massive importation, which involved enormous suffering and loss of life from the capture and transportation of slaves from non-Muslim lands.[11] Bernard Lewis maintains that though slaves often suffered on the way before reaching their destination, they received good treatment and some degree of acceptance as members of their owners' households.[12]

here’s something that might interest you: in Theravada Buddhism (at least as practiced in Thailand, but I believe also in Sri Lanka and India), the oldest sacred texts are written in the ancient language of Pali, which is somewhat akin to the use of Latin in the Roman Catholic Church. In Thailand, all males are generally expected to spend at least some time as a monk. Unlike Christian monks, one is not expected to spend one’s entire life as a monk. What is most important is that the person obeys all the rules and does his best while serving as a monk. This is especially important because laypeople gain merit by giving food and donating to temples. For these acts to bee of the greatest positive good, it is important for the monks to be pure. At one point when the King of Siam (now Thailand) found the Sangha (the group of all monks) to have been corrupted, he dismissed almost all of them and sent a small group of monks to Sri Lanka to bring back pure Theravada monks from which to recreate the Sangha. Even the King of Thailand is expected to serve as a monk at some time. There is a period in the spring that is somewhat akin to the Christian Lenten period during which many males choose to serve an abbreviated period as monks.

I feel happiness and joy in my heart and my mind. A true happiness within myself. Thanks Buddha for showing me your path. Whoever comes across Buddha teaching in his/her life is considered very lucky. As we live in this chaos era where the truth is hard to see, where nobody demands you to question anything, where you can't be yourself because of fear, Buddha gave us his light. The light that might be won't last any longer as Buddha himself said his teaching will disappear one day.

As a Buddhist in training, I am hoping to improve my studies in the Buddhist teachings. I had recently renounce the Christian faith. I still respect my family for being Christian and vice versa but truth be told I sort of never agreed upon the tactic the church uses (not saying all Christians act this tactic but there were many who did straight up say this to me and to my face) “You’re a sinner who will go to hell, if you don’t go to Church, Don’t ask questions that goes against God, and Don’t be a gay” This was what I was taught when growing up, hence why I converted to Buddhism once I moved away from the country life and moved to the city. Thankfully my mum is very supportive of my life choices and she said to me “whatever makes you happy, I will be happy” and she even quoted that to me before once I came out as Gay.

Dividing Buddhism is three major traditions (yanas) is one way of classification. The other (used in this video) categorizes Vajrayana as a branch of Mahayana. Their beliefs are quite similar, the major difference being that Vajrayana teachings focuses on Mantras to reach Buddhahood, while other Mahayana traditions focuses on Paramita (virtuous practices).

Buddha was agnostic as well. There is no mention of GOD in Buddhism. You don't need to pray to Go to attain nirvana. Buddhism is classified as atheist religion, you don't need to believe in God to be a Buddhist. Another atheist religion in India is Jainism.

+sanketpardhi002 In fact, even Hinduism is atheistic in a sense. As there are 300million + gods, there is no way one can describe the nature of each one. This means that each God is representing a physics concept, for example a Hindu god could be an energy like Light, Sound or electricity.

Also agnostic atheist but regardless of any supernatural elements, Buddhism's focus on living the right way feels like something anyone could benefit from. I actually learned about the origins of Buddhism through Osamu Tezuka's Buddha. It appears to be a slightly dramatised account, but fantastic none the less.
