I grew up in a non denominational home and when I was married we tried a bible based church close to our home and joined a small group. They were throwing around words we didn't understand "reformed" "calvinism" ect. We asked about this and they redirected the while Bible study for us to learn about biblical history and the 5 points. It made so much sense to us and my husband and I had many conversations together about how we feel like this is what we've always read and understood the Bible to be but not what we grew up learning in church. It was incredible. And it has been a beautiful learning experience for us these last 6 years together. We're so grateful for theocast helping us on this journey of understanding biblical truth.

Just wanna say that from my own perspective when I recently heard the gospel properly 3 or 4 months ago for the first time and began searching for what denomination to follow, calvinism seemed terrifying. It said that God picked whom he saved, and that it wasn't up to me. That gave me so much anxiety since I felt so unworthy and I felt like I fell so short which to me indicated that under this doctrine, I could not be saved. I wanted to feel paradoxically like I could pick God so that it was in my hands, while simultaenously thinking myself too sinful and unworthy to be picked by him in the first place. It definitely did feel like a contradiction. However the thing that I really noticed was just how well supported it was, it wasn't some fringe belief from 1 or 2 verses out of context, it seemed like I had to go out of my way to disprove the doctrine because It made me uncomfortable. Over time I want to say that I've let go of those fears and those anxieties because I've learned that I was putting my faith in myself and I was always going to fall short. I literally expected continuous and linear progress in my sanctification from day 1, and that if I didnt see it, I doubted and fretted and worried so much. Since then I've learned instead to place my faith not in myself but in Christ, and to trust in him. When I have doubts I go to him. I would definitely say that I've felt sanctification. I feel more at peace, I feel more open to other people, I have less anger and bitterness in my soul. One of my biggest personal obstacles was going to church in person at all. I am someone diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and if it were up to me a few months ago, I'd take £1m and never interact with another human. I just had no desire or need for it. But going to church and meeting other Christians has been special. It is still hard for me, but we all struggle in our own ways with certain sins and proclivities. I also do not pray as much as I think I should, so I push myself to work on that, mindful that I don't descent into checkboxing or legalism. Finally I just wanna say that I've really found your podcast helpful, I've listened to a lot of them and there always seems to be one that answers some concern. Initially it was assurance, then it was law/gospel, then it was about the corporate nature of love intended for the Church. Today I had doubts after thinking about all the doctrinal differences and listened to the episode on agreeing to disagree. Thank you for your shows, they have been very helpful to me.

Thank you for your testimony…. I’m currently trying to decide… I’ve always been an Arminian but I’ve been counseling with a reformed pastor recently… it gives everything a different perspective… I’m struggling with what you struggled with in my sanctification… The Lord delivered me of years of intense drug addiction and has blessed me with over 3 years clean… I wanna be holy but see that I’m not, so I start fretting and doubting that I’m saved… hopefully I can get over this. Thank you for your testimony God bless you

I grew up in dispensational churches, and was given the clear impression that Calvinism is bad news. When I started looking into Calvinism, I was shocked to find out I already agreed with it, based solely on my understanding of Ephesians 2:8-9.

What are your thoughts on confessional Lutheranism ? They don’t hold to limited atonement or preservation of the saints but do hold to election and bondage of the will . I’m confessional Presbyterian and love Lutheran Law/Gospel distinction but can’t understand their theology overall .

Presbyterian also has a law/gospel distinction (at least my OPC does). Any serious Christianity should include this distinction really.

I appreciate your efforts to explain this however, much of what you say is “inside baseball”. So I’m going to attempt to make it easier through 3 questions... 1) what is a lie? A) when asked to speak the truth about a given subject, provided you know the truth about that subject, and you do not tell the truth about that given subject, that would be lying. 2) did Jesus Christ ever tell a lie? A) no. Otherwise GOD would not have raised Him from the grave. 3) in Luke 23 we read this: Luke 23:39-43 (NAS): 39 One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 “And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.” So the third question is: was Jesus Christ lying to the thief on His right when He said “today you will be with me in Paradise”? A) No, no He was not. God granted the thief on the cross introspection and he acknowledged that he deserved the punishment he was receiving and through that recognition he knew he needed a Savior, Jesus Christ. Humbling himself he asked Jesus Christ to save him and Jesus Christ did just that. It’s my prayer that you recognize that we have nothing to do with our salvation, GOD and GOD alone doing it all for HIS glory and our salvation.

Great video. I've often heard of Calvin's followers wondering if they are truly one of God's elect. It's a terrible position to be in knowing that if you aren't one of his elect there is nothing you can do about it. The doubt in many Calvinist minds is understandable since in their minds it's all up to God's arbitrary choosing.

I’m not sure why people think you have to stick to either one of these views. I feel like both ultimately teach works. One says you can lose it if you don’t have good works and persevere in the faith and the other says if you don’t have good works and persevere in the faith, you never had it. Both take your eyes off the finished work of Jesus Christ IMO. I honestly don’t see a difference between the two. My faith is in Christ alone and I don’t follow an ism.
@HowAboutThat2243 жыл бұрын
@ShetheOvercomer “And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. Romans 11:6 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 I don’t believe our works get us saved, keep us saved or prove we are saved. My only assurance of my salvation is based off the promises of Christ. Too many “what if’s” if I have to constantly evaluate my life to prove my faith.
@HowAboutThat2243 жыл бұрын
@ShetheOvercomer Exactly. If our salvation depends on our performance, we have every reason to be anxious. However, thru faith in Christ, we can know we are eternally forgiven and have eternal life. Sin debt paid in full. I look at it as the prodigal son. Positionally, I am a child of God and nothing can change that sonship. However, like the son I can chose to go live in the far country in sin and disobedience to the father. However, I recognize that God will allow me to face consequences for that sin and he may chose to discipline me or even take me home early. I know that not serving Him will have eternal consequences as far as eternal awards. I also know as with the father to the prodigal son, God is always looking for us to return to relationship with him. I feel like we have to separate salvation and discipleship. Unfortunately, many of today’s most popular preachers do not separate the two and it absolutely leads to lack of assurance of salvation. It’s so much easier to serve God out of thankfulness and a position of rest than serving out of fear.
