What is Certan (B402) and Why Should You Use It?

B402®, also known as Certan, is a biological control for the prevention of wax moths on stored drawn frames. B402 uses Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a bacterium found in nature that kills wax moths in the larval stage.

I just use Certan. The adults don’t feed on the wax but as soon as the eggs hatch they eat the Bt and it gets in their stomach and they die. The thing I found though is when I run single deep I get some pollen in my supers above the brood box. Do you get that? I freeze those frames in case they have SHB eggs since Certan won’t work for that. Overkill is okay but will cost a bit more in the end.

Sometimes I get pollen in the supers but not that often. I’ve had very little issues with SHB in my yard. I attribute it mostly to direct morning sunlight and strong colonies. I never used beetle traps or any direct SHB control.

I am a true believer in this Bt. It works amazingly well. It kills the waxmoth larvae when they eat it. I think Bt and Paramoth is overkill.

Good to know. It’s my first time using it. I may try just Certan next year (or when I run out of Paramoth) and see how it goes.

Yes, both products will work alone. I use both for added insurance but it’s probably not necessary. I like the idea of Certan providing control for the entire year, even when the frames are back on colonies.
