I've been thinking a lot lately about cluttering and fluency disorders! Cluttering is a fluency disorder that can be characterized by rapid perceived speech, disorganized language, mazing, fillers, revisions, sound errors, leaving out sounds/syllables, and relatively low awareness of speech difficulties.
Thank you for watching! I am a singer who became a speech and language pathologist to learn more about the voice and to help as many people as possible.

I'm a total amateur at a variety of things, and one of those is a keen interest in Psychology. I may study properly in future! Anyway, would you think it's possible there's some overlap between cluttered speech and ADHD?

I didn't realize I may have had a cluttering problem until now, when my friend told me I spoke like a child trying to play an instrument with no knowledge of music. He said I did not sound harmonious. I started to research speech language pathology and found fluency disorder to be a genuine struggle for people like me. I wish I knew what causes it! Anyway I came across your video and I'm grateful for the tips, thank you. I wanted to share my thoughts. I get to hear that I speak rapidly a lot. I didnt make much of it because I felt that's how I like it, my thoughts are fast paced so I speak quickly. But the pattern of people telling me they didn't always understand what I was saying made me think about it seriously. I found myself repeating, rephrasing time and again, by the end of it wondering if it's my ability to articulate my thoughts that's the problem. And there were surely those uh and um fillers everytime I spoke. I think I switched to a robotic speech to try and stretch out each word and speak slowly. I didn't know it was a treatment tip until I saw this video. It definitely made me slow down my speech, but now lacks life, lacks harmony. So I'm going to try the rubber band trick to see if that helps add rhythm and flow. Thanks a lot!

I had a very similar experience. I didn’t realise I had a cluttering problem (hell, I didn’t even realise I was on the autism spectrum art the time) but a friend asked me if I was bilingual; he didn’t mean any offence and it was a reasonable question for him to ask in my own opinion as he knew I was somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 French, plus my first and especially my last name are very French. I just assumed a I learned English as a second language when I was really young or learned English and French together. I asked him what he meant and one of the examples he gave what that I rushed though sentences so quickly like a language a student who isn’t fully understanding what they’re saying and he said that I would get caught up trying to find specific words (which he compared to the common “how you say _______” that you hear from a lot of non native speakers). Now that he knows I’m autistic, it’s become a big of an inside joke between the two of us and

Thank you Lisa. This is really useful and please don't listen to criticisms about how you presented yourself. So what if you read off the cue, you had so much information that we understand this is sometimes necessary. I found a lot of very valuable information, presented in a warm, amiable and non-judgemental or 'clinical' way. In such a short time - no-one has an hour to go through a talk . Thank you much appreciated!

Noticed for a long time that I'm not good at story telling or speech. I struggle with completing a full sentence without messing up like pausing, stuttering or pronunciations. Lately I've been struggling with it even more. Started a KZbin channel and it's been getting more difficult to speak, I would need to edit short bursts of my video so it sounds fluent. Not sure if eating more carbs in my diet or more sugar in my diet is making my speech worse. It seemed when I was on low carb or keto, I had a clearer mind and can talk with more fluency. Could lack of sleep contribute my supposed condition too? I say this because I was never diagnosed with a speech problem, I tend shy away from people after a very short conversation. Does cluttering manifest in adults too? I do find myself slowing my speech down so I can gather my thoughts or repeating what I want to say so that my speech comes out smooth.
@Lisaslivelylife

I don't know of any research that links diet and speech, but that's no reason why you couldn't notice what works or doesn't work for you and adjust accordingly. Cluttering does manifest in adults. It usually has its onset in childhood but might not be diagnosed until adulthood.

at 2:55 you say that you could train to slower the rate of speech, ofcourse this is true and it totally depends on the person, but rather than speaking slower one should try to learn to articulate better. i am a clutterer myself and people can understand me when i don't trip over my words. this also depends who I'm with, what my emotions are or if im speaking one on one or in a big group. hopefully this is able to help. (im sharing my personal experiences this might be different with someone ese)

I cannot seem to find a description that matches my daughter's. I would describe it more as a hesitation. She will sometime nod her head or kick her foot to get her word out but once she starts, she talks fine. It's not constant but several times a day. What would you call that?

Hi, my daughter is 8 years old and she has started to drag out her words, even all the way to a high pitch when she's talking. Its usually the first word of the sentence she's trying to say. Sometimes also other words in the middle of the sentence. Not sure what this is called or what exercises to do with her to help. Any advice you have is helpful, thank you

@@Lisaslivelylife yes she's had speech problems before. She did about 2 years of speech therapy and that did wonders. She's been doing great with just a couple of sounds that sound kind of funny when she pernounces it. Just recently a few months ago, she started something new by dragging her words out. She won't be able to start speech therapy again until school starts again so I am trying to find out if there are specific exercises to help her with this issue now. No stressful events occurred. She stopped speech therapy about 3-4 years ago because the speech therapist didn't think she needed it anymore...

Lisa, Please consider a few tips. Find somewhere to do your videos where are aren’t backed into a corner. You know your subject matter. However, the viewer can see when you are reading because you look away from the camera. If you need to read, then somehow work with having screen and camera aligned. Slow down. You seem nervous and like you are trying to cram information into a short time. Finally, give us an example of what cluttering actually sounds like. You are providing information. Practice, practice, practice. You are talking to people-not a camera. Good luck!
