My first cornea transplant was in 1984. It was a donor graft. I went from 20/200 to 20/20. I cried when I saw my 2yr old son clearly for the first time. A picture of my eye is in a medical journal somewhere. My other eye cornea was transplanted a few yrs ago. This newest one is a lab created graft. Today June 25, 2024 I had my preliminary sclera contact fitting. I can't believe how sharp my vision was. Can't wait for the final fitting.

I went to an opthalmologist today to see if I needed crosslinking done on my eyes. She diagnosed me with keratoconus on both eyes with my right being more on the mild to moderate severity. My right eye has been progressing more lately. She recommended crosslinking for my right eye since it's changing year by year. My left eye has been pretty much the same. They scheduled the procedure for early February. She also recommended scleral contact lenses for my right eye after this procedure is done. She said a couple months after. This video is great to see how the procedure is done. I'll give an update how it went after this is done. Thanks for the video!

After years of being misdiagnosed with amblyopia in my eye by optometrists, or being told my eye will eventually "catch up" wearing glasses; I finally saw an ophthalmologist who did a full look at my eye with a scan and confidently diagnosed me with Keratoconus. One of my eyes is in perfect health, and the other sees at about 20/50 vision (very blurry). On one hand this diagnosis was surprising, but on the other I was very happy it was caught before I went blind. I'm being fit for Scleral lenses in about a week and I can't wait. As far as prevention goes, I'll be seeing the eye doc twice a year for a while to monitor progression and the doc says if it does progress I'll be getting the cross-linking done, but the doc said only if it progresses. I found this all out recently so it's still all sinking in. Thank you for this video.

My eye sight started getting blurry about 2 years ago but I paid it no mind because I could see great and never needed glasses before when I got eye exams. I recently started a new job at a call center and I’ve been having a very hard time seeing so I decided to go get an eye exam done and get some glasses. Today I went to get the eye exam done and the doctor told me I have keratoconus, astigmatism, and a weak right eye. He didn’t even prescribe me glasses because he said they wouldn’t be much help he referred me to another eye doctor for hard contact lenses. I’m really confused because how can I go from having perfect eye sight to having to squint and move in closer to see everything in only 2 years I can’t believe this

I had lasik 2 years ago and for maybe 1.5 years everything was good, except for dry eyes but I became very disciplined with using eye lube. Then, my right eye became so blurry, distractingly blurry, and by the 3rd time I followed up with an eye doctor (I moved in between) he diagnosed me with keratoconus. Much worse in my right eye, so I have my right eye on this Wednesday and I’m a little nervous now bc no one said anything about pain after. I’m reading comments from others who’ve had the procedure and mention how painful it was to recover. The doctor doing the procedure made it sound like I could drive home after and recovery might be 2 days. Also nothing about pain medicine for post-op.

I was led to believe the cross linking *alone* could improve vision but after crosslinking and after a scleral lens im told i wont see the thickening of the weak parts of the eye in a scan until up to a year. If keratoconus is from rubbing the eye too much and it takes up to a year for crosslinking to work means that the crosslinking really didnt do anything. BUT sclera lens give protection of the cornea and the shape of the lens is doing most of the work

Hi Dr. Allen. One major question I felt was missed was epithelial on vs off surgery. When I had my crosslinking done, my epithelial was removed first. And in research, this is the only FDA-approved method correct? This video didn't talk about all the epithelial being removed, which for me was the biggest part of my pain and healing process afterward. So was this procedure done with the epithelial still intact? I feel like this topic would have been a huge part to include in this video considering the aftermath of its being removed. And I hear it is always different from one doctor to another whether it is removed or not. When I got mine done, there was no special device to hold riboflavin in place. It was the standard 30 minutes where it was dripped over time in my eye before the light was applied after the epithelial was removed.
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
Amazing question Lucas! Thank you. Yes, epithelium off is the only US FDA approved procedure at this time. I apologize that we were not as clear in the video, but this patient had received the PRK procedure before the surgery so yes, the epithelium was removed beforehand. Otherwise, is it typical to experience discomfort during the healing process.
@yolandibester16572 жыл бұрын
Hi Luka, I agree that patients should know about the epithelial being removed and that it takes about 4 days to grow back in most cases. In my son's case it took almost 7 days to grow back. The healing process for him wasn't just 2 days. He had severe pain for the first 5 days. On day 7 the pain was gone. Also, people must know that they may find their eyes being extremely sensitive to light for a while, not just a day or two. My son also had the procedure twice now within two years on the same eye. So it isn't always 100% successfull and the bad spot on the cornea can continue to deteriorate. I feel that most KZbin videos are a little misleading because they make it sound like a quick almost painless procedure that fixes all your problems and it is not.

I was wondering how long after having the procedure will I have to wait before I can travel by plane? I currently live about 2 hours plane ride from my home town due to studies, but my Ophthalmologist (in my home town) don't want to refer me to someone closer (which I support, he is my country's leading expert on Keratoconus). As such, I will be doing the procedure during Christmas. However, last time I remember being told that I shouldn't lift something heavy for about a month after, as to not elevate the pressure in the eyes. So will I be able to fly home about two weeks after the procedure, or will I have to wait?

@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
Aberrations are pretty common with higher amounts of astigmatism and optical correction. Being that you notice more clarity with squinting vs opening the eyes, means there may be some room for improvement. If you would be willing to pay for it and try it, there are hard contact lenses or scleral lenses that may offer superior vision with less ghosting.

Thanks for the great question! There are many factors that can come into play whether someone needs crosslinking surgery or not. Such as age and if the condition is indeed progressing. I personally feel it is best to consider having it done if you are younger (under 40) and when I have a patient that shows their keratoconus progressing. Which we often have people back every 6 months to monitor. Contact lenses can help with improving vision with keratoconus but it doesn't stop the disease from getting worse.

I had a keratoconus procedure done but I was not booked for a post-operative procedure and they did both eyes at once. No contact lenses either! I was requested to go get a 👓 How long does the vision take to improve? Is it normal?
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
I know there are some different procedures and some professional variability. But usually the eyes take several months (4-6) and even up to a year to fully stabilize. Depends on a case by case basis as well.

When I had my crosslinking done they had my eye closed for the first 20 minutes and they would open it to administer the riboflavin, and then 30 min under the light. Why is there a difference in procedure and does it matter?

I have forme fruste keratoconus and was turned down by 1 surgeon already because of the atypical “subclinical” presentation I have. Would he be willing to do the surgery anyway?

If there is signs of progression, I suppose they would.

Some provinces cover it, I was told today by my ophthalmologist office that Ontario does now. They didn't a few years ago when I was first diagnosed.

Thank you for this video. I work in an ophthamology clinic where we also do CXL and was wondering if the device put on the eye is something that can be purchased.

Hey doctor eye health,if your at Minnesota,how long does it take to go to your appointment cause I live in Houston which is far away
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
Well we tell patient to plan for at least an hour. If someone does have a more complex disease, such as keratoconus, it may require more testing and a longer discussion, so it may take longer. As a clinic we are often booked a few weeks out. While we are always happy to see patients who are willing to travel, I know there must be some very qualified professionals locally in your area. I used to go to school in San Antonio, and I recall it taking about 22 hours to drive from South Texas to my area.

Hey doc! I had cxl done on both of my eyes about 6 months ago. I wanted to ask can i go to the gym and workout and start lifting weights and stuff? I've read somewhere online that lifting heavy weights will increase intraocular pressure on the cornea while might lead to the progression of keratoconus.
@ungenbunyon55482 жыл бұрын
That was the operation they were going to give me, but as my keratoconus has not deteriorated for quite a few years we figured it would not be of much benifit, plus I am in my early 30's now
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
It is true that keratoconus typically slows down as we get older. However, just as your doctor has been doing, we need to monitor for progression. As soon as I see progression in the disease I refer patients for the procedure. It is the best thing we have at this time.

Hi, I got a question. Is it safe to store daily disposable lenses in solution and reuse them after showering? For example if you go for a run in the morning with them, then store them, shower, and reuse them after showering? Thnx in advance.
@pinkfeet5182 жыл бұрын
hi! i’m not the dr but yes! daily lenses can be taken out and put back in throughout the day. just remember to clean them in between uses, don’t reuse them for more than 1 day, and please never sleep in them because corneal ulcers are not fun :)
@ronaldoalberto351010 ай бұрын
I had pseudo keratoconus, and then progression was seen in my right a week ago. My cornea became steeper apparently so now my corneal specialist is recommending CXL. I'm very scared because I can hardly sit still when someone taps me on the shoulder, so I don't know how I'll manage to sit through this procedure.

Dr i had this surgery nearly 9 years ago recently my left eye is again started the progression what is the reason
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
I have heard of some rare cases of the eye progressing again, perhaps the corneal tissue has remodeled over the years and needs to be done again.
