Hear a straightforward explanation of what cultural competence is and why it's important for your organization from Dr. Tamu Nolfo, the Project Manager of the Community Alliance for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS). Your organization's responsibility to be in compliance with the 14 National CLAS Standards will also be discussed. If you are a California-based service provider, you will be encouraged to take advantage of consultation and training from ONTRACK Program Resources at no cost to your organization -- paid for through a contract with the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs.

Thank you, Anthony and Hanna, for your comments. I am sorry that I did not see them and respond to them sooner. It actually caught me by surprise when I realized this week that there were nearly 4,000 views to this video clip! By way of an update, I am posting a follow-up video, which you can view by following the link in this video's description or by heading to ONTRACK Program Resources KZbin channel. Hanna, your comment makes me acutely aware that cultural competence encompasses amnesty, humility, dialogue, and ongoing learning - none of which are the strengths of a one-way monologue on KZbin. As for social norms, there are broad “American” norms, but more often there are norms specific to cultural groups, of which we belong to many. (continued below)

...(continued from above) I personally am American and a woman and multiracial, to name just a few, so I likely share some social norms with Muslims raised in America, but I doubt I share all of my social norms with anyone. I invite you to contact me at ontrackprogramresources@gmail.com if you are interested in a dialogue. I welcome the opportunity to better understand your perspective.
