What is Ecocriticism
Ecocriticism is the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment.(Cheryl Glofelty)
The term was coined by William Rueckert in 1978
Ecocriticism takes an earth-centred approach to literary studies. In other words, In ecocriticism, PLACE becomes a new critical category along with race, class, and gender.
Ecocritics tries to find out how nature is represented in a work
It is committed to the protection of the environment
There are two phases
1st wave- 1980- 1990's- natural writing and search for nature
2nd is political warfare- including climate change and global warming
Deep and Shallow Ecology
Two Philosophical approaches to nature
Deep
The term was coined by Arne Naess in 1973
It emphasizes the inherent value and interdependence of all living beings- That is environmental protection
In other words, everything in the environment has to be treated equally- We should not value them
It seeks to understand and address the underlying causes of ecological problems
It critiques shallow ecology for being too anthropocentric
It is criticised for the disregard of human interests.
Shallow
Rejects ecocentrism and Biocentrism
It is also called as environmentalism
Nature is only valuable insofar as it serves human interests
Nature is a resource
They agree that climate change is bad for us but against taking strict government actions
Capitalist and consumerist ideology is behind this
