FYI: the en passant was developed shortly after the concept of moving the pawn two spaces, because pawns couldn't really pass each other without the opportunity of taking beforehand, and players wanted to keep that property intact.

basically the goal is to checkmate the king. white goes first, black second. to checkmate the king you need to find how to make it not be able to move anywhere because of other pieces.
@nightmare42069_4 жыл бұрын
i'll try to summarize it so you're not confused
@nightmare42069_4 жыл бұрын
rook is the piece in the corner. the castle. it can move any direction vertical and horizontal knight (horse) can move in L-shapes. they are the only piece that can skip over other pieces. they are the horses by the rooks bishop can move any direction diagonally. they're the pieces by the knight queen can move in any direction but cant skip over pieces or go in L-shapes like the knight. it's slightly smaller than the king and stands next to him king can move any direction, but only one space forward. king stands next to the queen. the pieces in front of them are pawns. they can move 1 or 2 spaces forward (2 spaces only when in original place, cant do twice) and En Passant is a rare move in chess that can only be done by pawns it's basically capturing a pawn diagonally by going past them if the opposing person could've captured it but didn't (this can only be done on the 5th rank, which is the 5th square down from the person's side
@nightmare42069_4 жыл бұрын
stalemate is when the king is not in check, and cant move anywhere because it would be in check. it's basically a draw
@nightmare42069_3 жыл бұрын
i edited a few things slightly to hopefully make u and anyone who doesn't get chess understand more and BTW here's a format reference of the chess board: white side: [rook: very far left] [knight: left, beside rook] [bishop: left, beside knight] [queen: left, beside left side bishop] [king: right, beside right side bishop] [bishop: right, beside right side knight] [knight: right side, beside rook] [rook: far right] the pieces in front are pawns. place them one square in front of the rooks and knights etc. black side is the same thing except it goes King Queen instead of Queen King. the queen and king face each other from each side. chess board angling: it should be black at the left corner and the right corner white. it would be the same on the opposing side. if the chess board is labelled with numbers, a1-h1 on the bottom should be right. the numbers should go 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 on white side and on black side it would be upside down for them. once you have that set up you are ready to play. a few more rules: when you are in check, you cannot move a piece that will not help defend against the attacking opposing piece. this is considered as an illegal move (more in competitive chess but its also still a genuine rule you must follow). either you move a piece that will defend against all threats or move the king itself.
@orlock204 жыл бұрын
In the 1500s, Europe decided to put in two square move pawn opening and En Passant was the nerf. The rook, bishop and queen were buffed later, but the rules were never changed to allow them to get in on that action.
@swampet54574 жыл бұрын
What were the buffs given to those back rank pieces?
@orlock204 жыл бұрын
@@swampet5457 The European buffs were the pawn could move twice on the opening and in the 1800s could instantly promote, the rook, bishop and queen could move to the other side of the board and the king could castle (there were many versions of castling including a two square move in any direction once until the final version). Also it went from capturing the king to checkmate. Asian chess rules have the pawn moving one square always, the rook moving two squares, the bishop moving two squares but can jump over pieces and the queen moving one square. Knight and king moves are the same. No castling, no stalemates and the king has to be taken like the other pieces. also promotions are considered a move and pawns can only be promoted to captured pieces.
@calvinpatulin4 жыл бұрын
I thought the rook moved that way since ancient chess?

The en passant capture rule was added in the 15th century when the rule that gave pawns an initial double-step move was introduced. It prevents a pawn from using the two-square advance to pass an adjacent enemy pawn without the risk of being captured.

Chess has a long and distinguished history spanning millennia. While the rules have gradually evolved over the last 1500 years, the last major rule change extends past living memory, to approximately 1860, when the rules as outlined by Staunton became generally accepted, and all agreed that white moved first, stalemate was a draw, and pawns could capture en passant.

It's interesting that the Botez girls don't know where en passant comes from, I assumed they would. I find it fascinating that people become experts at a game without asking why the rules are the way that they are. In football, all players know the offside rule and I assume they all know why it exists, but maybe not. It's just a guess but I understand it as a rule to prevent goal-hanging. In rugby, why can you only pass backwards? I see it as a balance between risking getting tackled and passing but losing some territory; why can they kick forwards? It's a balance between gaining territory and losing possession/control. I'm not good at chess but as I understand it (please correct me if I'm wrong) patches were made to speed up the game, like allowing a pawn to move two squares because people did this over two moves at the start of a game anyway because that's the best position in the opening to cover the centre (similar with castling - people put their king in the safest place and got their rooks active but it takes at least three moves without castling). But with that change to pawns, people would be able to use the move to avoid being taken, so en passant stops it being used for that purpose. I'm only guessing at all this but it makes sense to me. It's in my nature to ask why things are the way they are, and maybe that's why I'm a scientist and not a sportsman/chess player!
