Ethereum is a platform that makes it possible for any developer to write and distribute next-generation decentralized applications.
Borrowing the concept of distributed consensus and cryptographic proof that makes cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin so effective in trustless payments, Ethereum extends the use of these technologies to trustless agreements. This allows developers to easily build innovative new products on a censorship and collusion-resistant foundation.
Ethereum will go live in Winter 2014/2015, in the meantime we are regularly releasing alpha software so you can try your hand at building distributed applications.

Ok, that sounds interesting. But if your currency is used as a framework to distribute all this services or values how do you prevent your blockchain from becoming ridiculously large? It sounds like if every web user would have to have their own copy of the entire internet.

For those who are still confused, my understanding is that all your personal data is stored under your public blockchain (like a profile id on social networks), and just like Bitcoin is secure, your info will only be accessible to you. That being said, also like Bitcoin, if you were to lose access to your blockchain, that would be it. You would lose all your data. Of course, that's just speculation at this point, and any "recovery" processes could obviously be implemented, depending on the system. I look forward to seeing this project as it develops.

I think the best way is to just start doing. Get Mist, the Ethereum browser plugin to Chrome. Start buying ether. Start mining. Or start developing a Dapp. dappsforbeginners.wordpress.com/ It will make more sense over time by learning as you do.

nothing but an opportunity to act as processor or vendor of electronic funds. the downside being 100's of thousands of vendors all eat off one piece of cheese all at once. The more and more cheese we eat together adds up, but at a sloth-like, no snail-like rate. meaning the volume of users is the only thing that will matter. with growing vendors it would never be worth it, depending on how many people use it. but it has all the best intentions to help the people. if someone could provide accurate payment scale according to membership and use, I would really appreciate it.

Could we make a massive model of a utility grid (particularly electric) to be used for transient analysis similar to software such as CAPE or EMTP? Think like, a distributed database for orcad. Everyone would own their own nodes/branches/lines. Then perhaps use a similar network for a national security/DHS/DOE style system to apply settings to intelligent digital devices (confirmations to apply settings by the network). what kind of analytics could we get if we tied all these new smart meters (electric/gas/water) to a system like this?
