Believers try to pretend that their erroneous assumptions of subjective evidence mean their faith is not in independent of evidence, despite every definitive source always saying that it is.

Aron, based on what I've heard from you and others, KZbin has become OUCH-Cube as it comes to anything even remotely controversial and particularly regarding religion. Any claim that they might make (which right now is dubious as hell) about neutrality or open-mindedness is a load of meadow muffins, and you and I both know it. What we can actually DO about this, I don't know, though I suspect that the answer is: not bloody much ... other than to support you through other mechanisms.

I became agnostic when I determined to stop believing things just because I was told to. The trigger that made me a full blown atheist was watching the debate between Bill Nye and Ken Ham, the utter dishonesty of Ham's side immediately disabused me of the notion of any god and sent me on the fast track to finding real, verifiable answers.

I was sitting in my apartment in the middle of the night and felt a weird sensation on my right ear. It freaked me out so I started looking around. I started seeing a bright orb floating around. I got really scared. Then I turned behind me and saw a ghostly dark figure just standing there. I started yelling, “ nope get out go haunt someone else” Then I started to feel embarrassed for even beginning to think a ghost might be standing next to me. The ghost disappeared and I remembered something that completely explained the situation... Ready for it. I was stoned. I started cracking up harder than I’ve laughed in years. I thought maybe you’d enjoy this little story.

And being high is also the likely explanation for a lot of religious stories. Ergot (a fungus that grows on grains, especially rye) has a known hallucinogenic effect. A lot of Bronze and Iron Age 'visions' were probably just from accidentally consuming spoiled grains.

I agree! His first book was fantastic. Its one of the few books I went through with a highlighter, every page was filled to the brim with exhaustively researched material that completely eviscerated any argument a screw-head (religious believer) could come up with, or indeed has come up with. If he published a second book with all this new information he has been putting out, I would buy it immediately. His prose is entertaining and highly readable. His sense of humor is sharp and satisfying, and each chapter I found information I had never heard of and only served to strengthen my resolve on the matter. I've even attempted to get religious believers to read his book so that they can better understand the position of an atheist, as Aron's book and videos are one of the best examples of not only our position, but objective reality itself.
@Eisenbison

Absolutely agreed. I have his book in paperback and audiobook. It covers pretty much all of his arguments against Creationism, but now I think he needs to release a new book where he outlines his own specific arguments about theology in all the detail he's done in the videos since that book came out. I would pre-order it immediately. I assume that the first book was financially successful?

@JohnElliottUK
@JohnElliottUK 5 жыл бұрын
Abraham, as with many apologists, you make an assertion that you know what they have read and how much. I would imagine they have read quite a lot of theology and philosophy and debated experts in those fields but please remember they are scientists and have also read a lot of literature (including peer reviewed !) which calls into question the dogma and ‘word salad’ of religious writings. Again, if you can put your position simply, with evidence that can be verifiable, testable, falsifiable and repeatable (or any of the above) then I would genuinely love to hear it as I sincerely want to know what can be shown to be TRUE.

This one is my favorite. There's far too few views, everyone who is even questioning should see it. I love the term apistivist, and have adopted it for a few years now. It's been a useful term for skipping past the surface apologetics and getting down to the point, which for me was always to know what's real, for all of us. Science, Naturalism, Materialism, whatever you want to call it, is so young, and has produced so much in just a blink of our timeline. Now it seems we're backsliding, just at the moment we're putting so much of it together. Give research a chance, it's our only REAL hope.

@Joshua Opell Don't rely on science for "truth or knowledge"? What does that really mean? Science provides exactly that, both truth and knowledge. That tree stump is exactly x centimeters across. Truth. That stump was created when this tree lying on the ground was cut down. We can see this by the clean lines and saw dust, and a prior knowledge that chain saws exist, even if we've never seen one. Knowledge. Every time, even if they are absolutely lost, they claim victory. And then they have the audacity to tell me I need to practice, so that I can beat them next year. Is irregardless a word?: Usage Guide Irregardless was popularized in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its increasingly widespread spoken use called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that "there is no such word." There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead. - - www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/irregardless

Psalsm 14:1 is not necessarily about Atheism. Heck, I'm not even sure people in 1000s BC have that concept. It's about people who act like they can do whatever they want without any repercussions because they refuse to believe in the truth of the consequences of their actions, evidenced by the fact that the Hebrew word used here is Nabal, toying with another character in 2nd Samuel whom David met before. Nabal refuses to believe that his negative and hostile actions will get back to him and does everything he wants. But payback did come and he lost everything he had. Again, just another reason why AronRa is showing he's not using his resources right and interpreting his own because he has his own bias to support.

Faith is the acceptance of claims despite evidence. Belief is the acceptance of claims without evidence. Trust is earned, it is evidence based. There is no such thing as “evidence based belief,” as an “evidence based belief” is knowledge. If you accept a claim based off of evidence, that is knowledge. I tell you I have a quarter in my pocket. I then ask if you believe me. This makes sense, is proper use of the word belief, and fits with the definition provided. I am literally saying, “I claim to have a quarter in my pocket, do you accept my claim?” At that point you consider; what is my experience with quarters? Are they small enough and light enough to fit in a thing we call a pocket? What is my experience with pockets? Is the person claiming to have a quarter in their pocket wearing a garment? Does the garment have a pocket in it.... With all that we can make the determination of wether or not we believe the claim. What if I saw someone drop a quarter in their pocket and then ask if I believe it’s there? I could say yes, and that would be accepted, but the fact is I know (not believe) that there is a quarter in the pocket. We’re just using sloppy language. If someone that has trouble controlling themselves around alcohol (let’s say an alcoholic) tells me they’re never drinking again, we would accept me saying that I have faith in them. What I am saying is, despite all the evidence to the contrary I am willing to accept your claim you will never drink again (I have faith in you). This corresponds to the scripture that Christians quote about things unseen... So, put succinctly, belief is the acceptance of claims without evidence, and faith is the acceptance of claims despite evidence. Codify the acceptance of claims without/despite evidence (organize belief and faith) and you have a thing called religion. Religion does not require a supernatural component (though it can certainly have one). The religion of the left includes anti-vaxxers, “big pharma” phobes, and Vegans. The religion of the right includes evangelicals, supremacists, and nationalists. All of these things are organized and belief/faith based. Anyone that claims they are not a member of “organized religion,” is not saying anything. Religion, by definition is organized. If it were not it would be a random collect of faiths and beliefs. The minute that you assert your position based in belief/faith, you are practicing religion. Put another way, there is no such thing as “disorganized religion.”

@RBEmpathy
@RBEmpathy 5 жыл бұрын
@@trenthorton9532 certainly. His point relied upon confusing correlation and causation. If you look at the demographics he was mentioning, and you consider socioeconomic status, education, and social cohesion of those demographics/communities, you quickly realize that religion is at best rather irrelevant. Look at poor, uneducated, isolated atheists and they're also likely to be immoral/amoral people. His point only proved that if you find groups that have social cohesion, education, and a comfortable living that they're less likely to be immoral or amoral people. That's.. sociologically speaking, a 'duh' statement. While religion might even work to better people who are already statistically likely to be moral, when you look at disadvantaged groups, religion seems to be a way to rationalize all sorts of despicable actions. Also, being an atheist and being privileged decreases someone's likelihood of being immoral/amoral dramatically, meaning that religion doesn't actually offer anything that privilege/education can't also offer just by itself. Just because religion can do some good, doesn't exclude its potential to have negative consequences as well. It shouldn't surprise anyone that those who take religion very seriously and study it and practice it constantly are also likely to be privileged and educated. After all, historically it was generally wealthy, religious households that could even afford school in the first place. And if you're interested in studying and intellectualizing your belief system it only makes sense you'd in general be an intellectual person.
@trenthorton9532

@@RBEmpathy I hesitate to make this point simply because I haven't read the studies myself, but don't you think that sociologists who conduct these studies control for outside variables such as these which would obviously have an influence? These aren't middle schoolers making bald assertions, they're trained professionals with years of education and experience specifically in these areas. If you're looking at one specific example can you cite it so that I can read it? Even if I grant that Mike could be confusing correlation and causation (I'm not, this is hypothetical) that wouldn't make his argument self-defeating, since those with intrinsic religiosity still exhibit such traits, even if the true cause were to remain unknown.

Except it was actually still God himself not his son because they are the same somehow. And also he didn’t stay dead so does it count? If I killed myself to stop someone else from dying knowing I would come back to life later and then demanded that someone to worship me because of my “sacrifice” or I will eternally torture them, does that make me worth being worshipped? Definition of “Faith” in the buybull -- John 20:29 - Blessed are they who have NOT SEEN but yet believe. Hebrews 11:1 - Now faith is the assurance of things HOPED for, the conviction of things NOT SEEN. 2 Corinthians 4:18 - We look NOT at things seen, but at things NOT seen. According to the bible, Faith is the belief in something with no Evidence. So you cannot have Faith AND real Evidence. It’s either/or. It’s all about being Gullible. Unless you want to go against the “word of god”. And for those of you religious people, religious faith is NOT the same as other things like Built Up Confidence, so don't get the words mixed up. Religious “Faith” comes BEFORE Real Evidence. Built up Confidence comes AFTER Real Evidence. Unless of course you want to disagree with your "gods" own words.................Simple as that. Thanks to you Ra-Men I went from being agnostic to being a atheist. And when your black and you're a atheist that's not easy. Something like 8 out of 10 black people believe in some kind of higher power including many members of my family. And they just can't understand why I no longer believe in an invisible sky wizard.

Alfalfa Jones I don't know about all that. I know our ancestors turn to religion to get through slavery. But I feel that this was a religion that was purposely forced off on black people to make us docile and make sure we always forgive our oppressors.

S Gloobal holy shit (pardon the pun), you HAVE to be trolling, or just extremely ill-informed about biology, palaeontology, taxonomy, abiogenesis, science and reality in general. Basically _everything_ you said was incorrect, the only thing you might be correct about is your ethnicity... and now I'm even doubting _that_ !

Dear Aron, you’re one my favorite Atheist debaters and as I mentioned a long time ago, because of you I left the clutch of Christianity at the age of 70. Now I’m 76 and of course an atheist, but here’s my plea to you, please speak a little slower, it would improve your argument, I have difficulty sometimes getting all in. Keep up your great work though. Cheers John

@@reasonandsciencecatsboardcom Nope. And nearly every point you made, has been debunked on this very channel. 1: now show that it was only your god. After you demonstrate the existence of your god. Cannot appeal to an unknown to demonstrate another unknown. 2: begging the question. Prove it. 3: Ditto. provbe it. 4: or life would be different. 5: wrong. Aron has a vid on this. We have proof that life CAN come from non-life. What we lack is concrete evidence as to which way it happened for us. 6: Cells are cells. Not factories. equivocation fallacy. 7: nope. That's not how probability works, and you are ignoring the iterative nature of biology. 8: Irreducible complexity was show to be legally proved to be false. Otangelo Grasso -- you have so many things backwards. Mathematics is not prescriptive, it is descriptive. I.e., _some_ types of math are useful in describing a variety of physical systems. Describe, not enforce. And Earthly life is clearly fine tuned to the physical conditions of Earth (and our universe). It's not the universe that's fine tuned, it's us. So what if many people claim to believe in Jesus? That's just another example of the logical fallacy of argument by popularity. Two thousand years ago most people believed the earth was flat. But many Egyptians and Chinese knew better. They were willing to actually test whether popular opinion accurately reflected reality. Using your argument we should all still believe the world is flat. In fact if we believe the Bible as you claim to, we should believe it is flat and that from a sufficiently high mountain one could see all four corners. And that the flat earth floats on an ocean and is covered by a dome. As Anatole France famously wrote "If 50 million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.

I have liked your definition of faith - _an unreasonable assertion of complete conviction which is not based on reason and is defended against all reason_ - for a while, Aron, and that said, this exhaustive video has been a long time coming. It paints the concept of faith into its well-deserved corner and refuses to let it out. Damned well done!

The true definition of Faith is expectation. Faith in the Hope of True Love. That's the whole message of Christianity. Loving Compassion and Mindful Mercy. Love LOVE. Love all Beings. Love your Self. Love enemies and create new friendships. That's the whole thing, all of Christianity fits on a note card. biblehub.com/john/13-34.htm LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

@Joshua Opell Pardon me, but BALONEY. Something either has a consistent track record of working or it doesn't. Something is either demonstrably true or it isn't. I'm an engineer, a troubleshooter, and a pragmatist. If I told one of my customers that they should have faith that I fixed their widget, whatever it might be, more than likely, they would show me the door (rightfully!), and indicate to my supervisor that I not be admitted back. The laws of logic are demonstrable. THEY WORK. Faith - belief without evidentiary support - simply does NOT. I will have no truck with faith because anyone can have faith in anything, which means that faith has no discipline and therefore no reliability. Science IS reliable, demonstrable, and repeatable, and indeed, I made a 30+ year career of using science, technology, and logic to serve my customers and keep their devices running. Never once did I employ faith ... because faith has NO functionality.

@Joshua Opell I've had a somewhat flippant "philosophy" as a field service engineer: If it works, *USE IT.* If it don't, *LOSE IT.* Science takes a different attitude toward that second situation: If it don't, *OBSERVE AND RECORD THE CHANGE.* And while we're at it, ASK QUESTIONS. Is this change consistent? Does it operate with in a specific bandwidth of parameters or is it universal? Plenty of other questions, too, depending on what was observed. For maybe 300 years after Newton posited his Three Laws of Motion, they appeared to work pretty well. One place where they DIDN'T work was in attempting to describe the precession of Mercury. With the advent of Albert Einstein and General Relativity, that conundrum was solved. The older laws still worked, just not in specific situations. The difference between science and religion is that science is open to correction. Its function is to learn and grow and be disciplined in that process. Are there screw-ups? Do da term "cold fusion" strike a familiar note?!? But that's why there's peer review: to confirm that a new discovery cannot be falsified. Keep in mind, science treats what it knows as PROVISIONAL, subject to a future discovery or observation. Sure, I rely on science (don't look now, but WE ALL DO), yet I remain a skeptic. My multimeter works pretty well, but I still touch the leads together before I check resistance and have it tested against a standard regularly to maintain its accuracy. On its best day, religion does not, indeed WILL NOT do that, will not check itself against reality, and from my own observations, religion diverges from reality entirely too often to be trusted.

Hello Aron, you will most likely not see this, but i thank you. You and Darkmatter2525 were two people i found here on KZbin. Thanks to Darkmatter i began to doubt the bible and read it snd thought for myself and realized the inconsistencies with science and history which I've always been a lover of since i was very young. It was then that i decided i was no longer a catholic but an "Agnostic". I would say "I don't know if god is or isn't real.." but thats when i found your channel. Thanks to you i learned of fallacies, and reasoning and the falsehoods of just "believing" and instead basing thoughts and ideals of rational and evidence. And so thanks to you, i now know im an Atheist. So i thank you for helping me to realize that i am an atheist and not an agnostic. You are a great inspiration and a great KZbinr and i hope you'll continue to create videos for a long time to come.
