Here’s my experience with the Acoustasonic Tele. I primarily play music at church and our music leader purchased one to use when we were short musicians. He used it with the Line 6 Helix...ran through an acoustic patch if he needed acoustic and electric patch when he needed electric. It worked really well for fast transitions and the style of music we play. I agree that the price is ridiculous, but I guess if you like it and it works for you buy one, if it doesn’t, don’t buy one.

@@vandal_dk I guess he could have. I do remember us trying to figure out how to get a good acoustic tone using the acoustic simulation in Helix, but we weren’t happy with it. It just worked well for him and the tone was great.

You asked, so I will give my answer. I bought the tele one for a single reason: it is physically easier to play than a traditional acoustic. I have nerve damage in my left hand and a traditional acoustic causes a lot of pain. This instrument, while it isn't as easy to play as an electric, has an electric feel on the neck. It isn't an amazing acoustic sound raw, but plugged in it isn't bad. I don't like the look of the top (the painted/sticker looking top), the price was far more than I think it should be, and I never use the 'electric' sound, but.... for the first time in a decade... I can play an acoustic. And for an amp, use an acoustic amp or modeler (I use a Helix personally).

The Acoutasonic series is very appealing to me because I work on ships as a musician. I'm a solo act and the electric guitar part of it sounds decent plugged in through a DI. I tried the Telecaster another musician on board had and really enjoyed it. BUT.. I totally agree the price tag is way to high. But one day when I get back on a ship to play, or maybe do solo gigs I can sport one. Like I said the idea of what I can do with it in my show and performance is VERY APPEALING.

The Acoustasonic is a guitar that is designed for the bedroom hobbyist who is (1) very concerned about volume and (2) doesn't want to have a room full of different guitars. It's the ultimate guitar for the casual player. The low volume on the acoustic side makes it appropriate for casual playing and the multiple acoustic+electric voicings eliminate the need for multiple guitars. This is not a guitar that is designed to appeal to gear heads or professionals in the music industry.

Acoustasonic target market: I look at this line and see a solution that could very well fit me. I'm an electric player in the heavy rock and metal genre who occasionally has a need to track acoustic sounds and doubles high gain guitar tracks with a clean JM or an acoustic. My reality is that the acoustic I reach for most of the time when I'm doing this is a Talman acoustic with a DI and an LD condenser. For what I use that Talman for, this seems like an all-in-one solution. I'm with you on the price- if it comes down below 1500, I'd be thinking harder about getting one. If it was under a grand, it'd be a no-brainer for me.

I think you guys are not thinking correctly about what this guitar is marketed/designed for. I don’t think Fender designed this to be a good electric or a good acoustic. I think they wanted to design something completely different, not to solve a problem. I think they wanted to create a new instrument for for a new style or design of music. I’m sure back in the day people were against the electric guitar. All new products are met with some resistance. But hey, what do I know? I’m just a guy on the internet. Overall this was one of my favorite episodes of dipped in tone. I think you both were very respectful of fender, the product, and the people who make them. I will not buy one of these because of the price, but if it was more affordable I would definitely consider it. You both are great, quality content, will continue to watch each week. Appreciate you both.

LOVE THE STAR WARS DRIVES!!! Could not care less about the acoustasonics. I think it's nice that you can see your favorite youtube channel sharing the product. I think the problem is that the big companies (Fender and Gibson) are just showing they're able to swamp consumers with nothing but their products. I'm thankful Paul Reed Smith doesn't try to kill the market with their products.

I previously owned a Taylor T5 too, and agree with Rhett's sentiment that it did neither electric nor acoustic very well. But I recently acquired a JM Acoustasonic and it is without a doubt the best plugged-in acoustic sound I've used, much more versatile than your typical acoustic-with-a-piezo or even Taylor's much-touted ES1 and ES2 systems. It's also very comfortable to play and move around with. Sure, I will still pull out my traditional acoustics for many kinds of traditional recordings with condenser mics, but I'd MUCH rather cart around the acoustasonic for any kind of live situation, it is much easier to handle. I can plug in direct to an acoustic amp, sound board, and/or use a Helix acoustic-preamp patch and it sounds quite good. While I'm less enthusiastic about the "electric/overdrive" sounds out of it, as an electric-acoustic instrument there isn't much that can compete on convenience and versatility in acoustic tone when plugged in. It's not for everyone, but a lot of people aren't very open-minded about taking a different approach, even if it might help get a job done easier, just because it's so "different."

Rhett lives in a part of the world where space isn’t a problem. He has a big studio room, a big car(americans don’t realise how big their average cars are compared to europeans), plays on big stages with space for backline. For a city dweller with a small car in a tiny apartment playing bars/pubs where the guitar player barely has enough space to stand, let alone have big boxy acoustics taking up floor space, a hybrid guitar makes perfect sense. My Parker - i can be playing a gig,/jam night, flick a switch on the guitar and suddenly I have an acoustic coming through the PA. does it sound 100% acoustic? No, but it’s close enough to fool enough people to wonder where the acoutic guitar sound is coming from. That’s enough

Based on all the nintendo talk, I was a low brass/euphonium/baritone player in college (getting a music ed degree), and lot of people at my school would always add something fun and light hearted at the end of their senior recital (for example, an old roommate who was a drummer had a band come out and they played Rosanna by Toto). Any way, my last "real" piece for my recital was a Tuba/Euphonium Quartet, so for fun I transcribed all of the original Super Mario themes into a little suite for the quartet, and put it on the recital program as "Themes from Koji Kondo".

So, "Fender is a big company, they've done a ton of market research"...I'm a corporate guy. I've worked in very, very large company marketing departments. Let me tell you, there are decisions that are made based upon diligent market research, but as often as not someone with some clout in a company comes up with an idea, no one wants to say it sucks or they get shouted down when they do, and the whole company ends up running with it. And once a new big project gets momentum, it takes on a life of its own. Peoples' careers come to depend not on it being a good product or a success in the market but on getting the project to completion. And as the project goes on people start to gain false confidence in it and get personally invested in it, so criticism becomes harder because everyone starts to take it personally when you try to kill their new big project. And so you end up with New Coke or an Acoustasonic Jazzmaster. Corporations are subject to the same human frailties as any other group of people.

As someone who has reviewed gear for Guitar Player and Premier Guitar for decades, I can assure you that, while advertising in the magazine may move you towards the top of the pile as to who gets reviewed, it is not a guarantee of a good review. Most gear these days is probably good for someone's needs and maybe not as good for others. It is the reviewer's job to relay who might like it and who might not. Also, if a piece of gear is truly bad, we send it back, we don't give it a good review.

On the Fender Acoutisonic Rhett I think you are completely right. I'm and Acoustic semi pro player. I started out on a pretty nice Martin DC-16 gte Aura. A couple years ago I picked up a Godin A6 Ultra. To get a good acoustic sound with Godin I preamped and eq'd the hell out of it and ran it through a $3500 Bose pa. My Duo partner picked up one of the Tele fender Acoustisonics when they came out. Man it never sounded good. Always thin and no fullness. Apparently it has no way to EQ on the guitar. What I did love about Godin A6 Ultra was the smaller footprint. Easier to carry around . On my back then a full sized acoustic. And it was easier to play. Sometimes I have to carry all my gear in one trip, so smaller is better.

Honestly, I love that they're making more acoustasonics, but I won't be buying one until it's actually affordable. It's 264 hours at minimum wage to get $2,000. That's more than 6 weeks at full time. It's got to be more affordable before I'll seriously consider purchasing one.

I think there's a simple answer to why Fender launched the Acoustasonic. If it continues to roll out subtly different variations of its iconic models it will only maintain its current level of sales, as how many players will continue buying slightly different versions of what they've already got? By launching something it can present as more revolutionary, whether good or bad they will sell a lot to people who like the idea of something "different". Most people who buy it will probably be casual bedroom players (like me) who have some disposable income that they're itching to spend. I can't see many pro musos buying Acoustasonics.

I have to say I’m surprised by the willingness to jump to a conclusion on the Fender from 2 who have not played it. Especially Rhett who views guitars as nothing more than tools, this isn’t supposed to replace anything you have but be a new tool for the toolbox, and staying on that analogy, it seems like quite the Swiss Army knife. From the few videos I’ve seen, it seems to have a wide range of tones and people are at least excited to give it a go. A pickup developed with Tim Shaw can’t be all that bad either. Personally I think the Jag shape is really great and I’d love to have one just because I don’t like the feel of traditional acoustics. I could get plenty of use out of it, and mostly and glad to see someone pushing the boundaries and introducing new things in the guitar world. Good on Fender. We need more innovation

Honestly, I felt it took way too long for them to admit that something like this wasn’t made for them… when you find yourself asking “who asked for this?” that’s the clearest sign a product isn’t made with you in mind. I think the most annoying thing about a lot of guitar gear commentary these days is “well I don’t see a use for it, so it’s of no use to anyone”. Let alone the “solution looking for a problem” phrase is so full of disdain for absolutely no reason. Wouldn’t Fender have pulled the plug on this line already if this wasn’t solving a problem that artists were looking to solve?

I think this guitar would be very good for a person who is primarily a vocalist and is look for one guitar to meet all their needs while having the easy playability of an electric, and the usefulness without a whole rig of an acoustic. I know a lot of folks in the before times who play weddings, corporate events, restaurants, etc. that would love this guitar. Sure for someone like the folks who watch this channel and own nine guitars and six amps and three hundred pedals, the guitar is going to sound super compromised. But for someone whose main instrument is their voice and who just needs something super convenient, easy to play, and versatile for accompaniment this would be great. Similarly I could see this being a winner for the pro cover band keyboard player who occasionally needs to play guitar for a few songs in a set.

Hey Rhett & Zack, I enjoy your discussions. I actually bought an Acoustisonic Strat from Sweetwater. I gig on a Martin acoustic/electric with one of my bands and I’ve always gritted my teeth and just put up with the amplified sound quality. I will say that through an acoustic amp the guitar did sound pretty good, BUT the playability was just not there for me. Also, the instrument has what appeared to be a sticker or applique on the front which along with the light weight made the whole thing feel like a toy, not worth $ 1999.00. By the way my solution was get a better (Fender) amp for the Martin, which made a whole world of difference for a lot less money.

By far and away, the YourHeaven system is the best acoustic guitar mic/pickup. You plug it into the house system and it sounds just like the guitar when it is unplugged only louder. I did a sound check on a band that used YourHeaven and at first I didn't think it was working until I got to the back of the room and I could hear it loud and clear. The next week I ordered one for my guitar and fiddle. I have no vested interest in YoueHeaven. I'm just a fan.

I don't mind the marketing. To me it's all about the trust relationship with the youtuber. If I can trust them to give an honest opinion, that's all that matters. In fact, if it's a product that I'm interested in, I'm going to want the people I trust (like Paul) to participate in the day one madness so I can get their take earlier. The other thing to keep in mind is that there are very few people I have that sort of trust relationship with. When a new product drops, I'm typically waiting for those people before I start to form an opinion. A blitzkrieg of people's opinions whom I don't trust does little to influence me.

When products are released and EVERYONE starts making videos about them it feels very off and very weird. For example, fender did this same thing when they released the American Pro guitars a few months ago, and everyone made the exact same type of video. They all feel like ads. Yes people say they are giving their "honest opinion" but their opinion is based on the fact that they got the product for free. I hate it when products release and everyone makes videos about them it feels wrong, forced, and turns me away from the product. If the product was good enough people would make videos on them organically over time and not flood our feeds with 30+ videos of the same thing. Just my take on everything. Amazing episode like always!

The acoustisonic electric sounds model an amp so both acoustic and electric are designed to go straight into a PA with no additional processing or switching. Also re: do we like this as consumers? I guess I'm in the minority where I liked the drop of all the videos are the same time because I could get a lot of info from different sources. I really liked yours and everyone else's release day drop off the Neural DSP modeller. It's a writing tool, and is meant to help you swap from acoustic sounds to electric sounds mid-song. Is that a $2,000+ problem? No. Jack White himself is also excellent at changing instruments mid-song. But that's the only problem I see being solved by this, it's a corner you have to write/paint yourself into.

Could buy the acoustisonic as an oddity that might be worth money in the future if it was a short run that got discontinued.

I was actually thinking about the user group for this guitar. Musicians who make a lot of looper music! For looping, this is great - lot of different sounds incl. percussive sounds. And you also don’t have time to switch guitars when looping...

Jack White said in an interview that he wants to "fight" his guitar, for it to be a struggle (It might get loud documentary) I remember him talking about his weird crappy plastic guitar... Maybe the acoustasonic is one you have to fight, or maybe it's just a weird guitar and Jack likes weird guitars?

@@MajorUpgrade I dont think so. The "struggle"-thing is done for Jack White. Thats the reason why he plays a EvH Wolfgang and the St.Vincent-signature-model.

I don’t think it’s the struggle thing with the acoustasonic. His is actually a custom shop one they made to his specs, with the same pickups as the American ones. I guess he liked the sound on some songs on the new album. It sounded great on Help Me Stranger!

I come from a traditional electric background, but I was still very intrigued by the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster just for some new sounds. I believe their aim is to have a guitar that feels and handles like an electric, which produces acoustic tones. I played one last weekend and it sounded terribly through an electric amp, even on electric mode. So you'd effectively need a DI or acoustic amp, which very few people have. So I really don't get the aim of this guitar either...

Regarding the KZbin blitz around the launch of a product: it's only a problem if you follow every single channel who would be likely to receive and make a video about the product. i only follow a couple, so it's not a huge deal to me.

"Who had this problem?" Anyone who needs the sound of an acoustic and hates the way it feels to play an acoustic. Acoustics sound amazing, but holy shit I hate how bulky and cludgy they are. That said, I'm never buying one of those things.

The most confusing part of the Acoustasonic line of guitars is the price point. 2k seems pretty steep for what it is, I think Fender would kill it with a Squier version that costs 800-1000$.

With some gear, I want the most styles and folks to cover a piece of gear, the more pricey the better, so I can see it's entire width of application. Like....the nightsky, for instance. But it's annoying to have that blanket of it. Some accounts were doing multiple vids that day, like....why. I'd be -far- more inclined to not get annoyed if they did a couple waves, which would be bad to tier YTers like that, but...I'd hate logging into my feed less on a release day lol. It's a wild time. All hail the algorithm.

The target, the market for this : absolutely not the studio (even poor people working on their demo or budget prod will take their best electric, even using computer plug ins, and mic up their best acoustic). No, it's for live use, it's for people who don't use their car to go to their gigs, (no need to drive in most big European cities! :) ), can't carry 2 guitars, typically small solo bar gigs, cafés, open mics, and especially looping artists à la Ed Sheeran or Tash Sultana, with some sort of electric effect pedals, and plugged into an acoustic amp or straight into a soundboard, to switch quickly between the acoustic and the electric universes, on budget, with a decent result in moderate volume levels. That's why they should release quickly cheaper Squier versions, or at least cheaper made in Mexico versions. I used to use my Taylor's 210e ES-2 piezo for looping rhythmic acoustic parts, and a Bill Lawrence soundhole magnetic pickup for "electric" solos, at little bar volume levels it's decent.

I like RJ's approach which is just play it and don't comment. Make it sound as good as he can and you make the decision. On the other hand I also like to hear from people I "trust" meaning channels I have experience with and have agreed with their assesment.

1: The amp problem is solved, but it is very obscure. Quite frankly, I am regarded with suspicion every time I bring it up. What tube amps that can handle this range are built like old stereo sets, only more so. It takes tweeters, woofers, and sub-woofers wired to shunt the signal properly to sound good. I know because I have one of these dinosaurs. Sounds great. I dare Mythos to build me another one because it is very old. 2: The guitars are already out there. Parker and Brian Moores threw everything but the kitchen sink into their guitars, and they fell flat. I'll send one over that's been properly fettled, but just snag a PRS SE Hollobody Piezo, and the demonstration will be straightforward. 3: The T5 and Acoustisonic lines can be considered second generation hybrids. As such they are causing more problems than they solve, and for the reasons Rhett started to list. Plug into... what? How can these compromises be reduced to the intended tone? And how can this be considered a Jazzmaster when there's nothing like Jazzmaster tone in it? It favors the acoustic side of the scale by a wide margin without mastering it. Suggestions: get one, and fix it with pedals and amps. Next, take a standard Jazzmaster and make it sound like an acoustic. Which is the shorter line to the better tone on both sides of the equation?

It's funny because I literally thought at $799 it might be fun to play with but for $1,999 I wouldn't even look at one in a store. Regarding the rollout - I was put off by all my favorite KZbinrs dropping the video at the same time and only watched a couple - but if I'm honest I would have watched all of them (time permitting of course) if it was a product I was interested in.

not a fan of the guitar but should point out that people buy more cars with fake vents, grills , spoilers, and rear wings that do nothing than one that don't. From a spectator view point there is probably something psychological / placebo about just seeing the sound hole, it tells them its an "unplugged" style set.

to me, the Acousti-sonic guitar seems a bit like the Bradley Fighting Vehicle of guitars. because of the influence of dozens of senior military officials were involved in the oversight of the design of the vehicle, it's all over the place, and as such, suffers because it isn't really one thing at all- it's ten things trying to be one thing. That said, i purchased my very first grown-up Fender guitar this year. luckily, it's an electric guitar trying to be ...um... an electric guitar. and it's awesome at being an electric guitar.

Your claims make a great point. I watch a pretty big number of guitar youtube channels, and can’t think of 3 people off the top of my head who actually play the acoustasonics. They claim so many people buy these and continue to make them, but I really can’t think of people who are playing it. Acoustasonics are Jacks of all trades, masters of none imo.
