What is Flyball? - Flyball Documentary - Dog Sports

A short documentary filmed in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada about NAFA Flyball in which Cheshire Set Canada appear. I believe it was created just for the SaskTel TV OnDemand service, so unlikely to appear on regular TV anywhere.

We actually drafted the first set of rules for today's organized flyball back in the 70's. It sure is amazing to see how much the sport has evolved over the years! Dogs of all sizes and shapes can play flyball, and it's an exhilarating sport for both competitors and spectators. This was a really cool segment, and hopefully it will encourage more dog owners to get involved with this sport!!

Thank you so much for posting this! Flyball is a bit of a mystery for most of us. Crufts gives some clues - but it's hard to understand how the handlers know how to start the dogs, why fumbles are so common, etc. More videos like this would be very welcome!

you can be a child--the dog has to be at least 12 months old to start racing, but I don't think there are any limits on how old the handler has to be!

your right in a way but it also depends on what breed your dog is, some dogs are bredd just for this, and it also depends on how old your dog is when you start, i have put 4 dogs through fly ball training and i have a 18 week old puppy just starting and he starting jumping them by himself in the first few days ( and its not just speed they have to hit the box a certin way or they hit it)

Flyball is so much fun!! I ran it summer 2 years ago with a couple of my trainers' dogs, and it was a ton of fun :)

Why run loud music when the explaining starts? I can barely hear what she says. I gets better as the video continues but skip the music next time if there will be one.

For White Shepherds or any german shepherd, dock diving may be better activity and safer on their body. Also field and tracking, with nosework are a favorite activity of shepherds.

How does one get involved in Flyball? there's no teams in my area, but I really want to get my dog involved in it.

+shurtugal1 It depends on your area really if there are any major training areas or where the races are held. Sometimes it requires some travel in order to really be a part of a team. But, once you do get yourself settled in a team the travel and all that is easy.

Great video. Really enjoyed watching it, but not as much as dogs in the video clearly enjoyed playing Flyball. I enjoyed writing the The Flyball 5, the adventure story of of 5 abandoned puppies reunited in a Flyball team. The Flyball 5 is available from Amazon and I very much hope people will enjoying reading the book.

Some of the dogs are a bit large as well. As far are safety goes conditioning and feeding is key. Oh and for the dogs too.

They are covers for their dew claws. Some dogs can snag them easily, some not so much.

there is a great program put on by Rocket Relay/Kelly and Aaron Robbins on their website--if you Google it you will find it. You can buy a yearly membership and it teaches you how to do it. Believe it or not, foundations can be started quite young--not the jumping or the bigger pieces of the behaviour, of course, but teaching your puppy what rewards to love, and getting her addicted to those rewards, and learning to have certain types of fun with you and chase you etc.

Most dog sports don't have enough money involved in them for doping to be an issue. Apart from Greyhound racing (where doping does occur), dog sports are all about regular people having fun with their pet.

They originally had a box that would pop a ball into the air for dogs to catch. You can see that on early flyball (for instance 2000 or 2001) on Crufts on youtube.

I love owners who are active with their dog and don't only use them as furniture! But I slightly wonder what this sport give the dog... It seems stressfull first of all. Second, the risk of dogs colliding seem high, as they run past each other.

What does any dogsport giving to the dogs? It gives them mental and physical exercise, they can work for their owner and they love it otherwise they wouldnt run so fast. Dogs learning how to run is part of the training so colliding is an risk but well trained dogs don't collide.

Sven-Bertil Tååbe If there is a tournament in your area, I suggest checking it out! I find Flyball the most fun out of all the dog sports. The dogs really love it too. The dogs know they are racing, and you can see this when they are racing.

Yeah, I agree. What I meant is that I do a lot of exercise with my dog, as I would assume anyone in any dog sport would also do. I was simply stating it's odd that there'd be so many people who do so much physical activity and not be physically fit themselves. I know there are conditions which make people contain fat and not burn it, but it's not like almost everyone at a sport would have that. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, I also hate it when people say "No offence" then proceed to be rude. I probably didn't realise I kept the last bit in and had meant to delete it because I probably posted it early in the morning after not sleeping.

It was't THAT offensive. It seems that Flyball, unlike Agility, doesn't demand hyper-well-trained handlers. More split-second timing, excellent team spirit and a really, really good relationship to the dog.
