This is really helpful Ben. My LP Junior has fret sprout and I’ve been deliberating tackling it myself.

Right on Ben, really like the good camera angle showing the roll over to feather in the fret end. Nice touch! Rock on Brother!!

That's a good video Ben for guitars that have trimmed fret tangs. Unfortunately, I have a MIM maple neck Strat that I bought 6 years ago new, and they didn't trim the tangs short. Consequently, they stick out of the sides of the neck. The frets themselves end at the edge of the fretboard, so that isn't an issue. I think I would be better off taking this to a Luthier to have that fixed without damaging the clear finish on the neck. I'm not sure if it's polyurethane or acrylic, it's glossy whatever it is. Thanks for posting Ben.

It would be poly paint. Cheers Harley!!

My solution to fret sprout is no frets. No frets, no fret sprout!😁

If you file the fret edges down, what happens when the humidity returns? Shouldn’t you protect the wood and finish with something? I can just see a slip...ugh!
@BenCoombs3 жыл бұрын
The wood doesn't swell enough that it becomes an issue with the frets. If you happen to remove any finish off the neck and want to seal it I find clear nail polish for laquer or clear poly on a small brush.

@@BenCoombs for nearly 50yrs I have never had an issue with fret sprout until now. Weird. Thanks for the response. With regards to the finish; that doesn’t worry me really, I am an actual journeyman painter. Lol My ‘74 SG’s neck was so gritty and sticky most of the time that I decided to refinish just the neck and when I had the neck stripped down to bare wood, I just left it! It feels so good and smooth not to mention slippery. I’m never selling it anyway because it was broken at the headstock by a stoned drummer at a showcase gig, of all places. Stumbled over my cord and,...well.

Won't humidifying the guitar fix this or reduce this. Shouldn't that be done first before filing? Especially on an Acoustic? I have an acoustic that has been stored in a case and now has fret sprout. That's a major sign that it's dried out too much. I would think humidifying it would be the first step, then work on the frets if it still needs it.

Hell, sometimes, weather or neck movement has nothing to do with it. Just buy a new "Players model" Tele or Strat from New Mexico and you get a fantastic, great playing guitar with decent action but terrible fret end cutting and dressing from the factory. My new Tele is one such victim. It looks like it was snipped without ANYTHING else done to it. So....."be your own guitar tech"! I 'gots' me my own file for such surprises. (As they would say in olden days).

Considering you were going to get right into it, why didn't you? Final three minutes would have sufficed. Useful but for all the flannel.

It takes more than three minutes to do all the frets. After shooting this I spent 90 minutes working on them.
