It started out as a stage play written by Patrick Hamilton in 1938. Then the 1940 film directed by Thorold Dickinson (starring Diana Wynyard). Then the 1944 film directed by George Cukor (starring Ingrid Bergman).

Staring Ingrid Bergman (she won an Oscar) but also cruel Charles Boyer (nominated, didn’t win). The film also stares 18 year old Angela Lansbury (nominated for supporting actress), Joseph Cotten and Dame May Whitty. A superior movie ❤ Greetings from France 🇫🇷

It's important to note here that the gaslighting was intentiional and malicious. Sadly, we have evolved into a society that wants to label everyone who disagrees with us as gaslighters. The word is losing a lot of credibility.

The term is misused and overused these days. People use it to describe simple, outright lying, misdirection, or to describe people who are insistent, or who don't agree with your views.
