What is going on with Qantas? Australia's airline drama, explained At a time when #qantasairlines probably expected to be celebrating its biggest profit on record, the airline is in serious damage control amid a series of controversies. Despite the company’s remarkable financial turnaround from $7bn in losses over the past few years, #Qantas has found itself struggling to rebuild its image as a much-loved Aussie brand. Just when it appeared things could not get worse for the flying kangaroo after two bruising parliamentary committee hearings this week, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission struck what could be the biggest blow of all. The lawsuit, alleging false, misleading or deceptive conduct, comes on top of a class action over travel credits, the #QatarAirways controversy, political fallout and employee discontent. "Despite the company's remarkable financial turnaround..." The "company" includes all of its workers. If the "company" chooses to increase its profit margin by screwing its employees to the back wall by employing them via hire companies so as to avoid paying them what they would otherwise be entitled, then it is not the company that is making a turn around, it is the pointy end of the corporate pyramid and fat cat shareholders that are experiencing a turn around, while those doing the heavy lifting are sent dive-bombing into the ground so that the likes of Alan Joyce and Co. can get ever bigger multi-million dollar payouts. The level of hypocrisy is simply astounding, and why I believe that corporations are inherently toxic to society!

The Australian government (from all parties) are to blame for the financial pain being felt by many Australians. Selling of former Government assets (for a one-time cash grab to promise spending in other areas to get elected or reelected) like Qantas, Telstra, State Electricity suppliers, etc, etc means that the decisions made by these companies now has to be based around what is best for the shareholders not what is best for the Australian public.

If the dishonest retention of customers money wasn't bad enough for the Qantas image the other burning question that needs to be answered is the appearance of collusion between Qantas and the Federal Government over the Qatar decision. Did Qantas agree to change the paint scheme on certain aircraft to show support for the Voice in exchange for competition protection. The failure of Joyce to provide any credible answers at the recent Senate estimates and various reasons for the Qatar decision given by various Cabinet Ministers certainly needs a closer look. While doing that perhaps the authorities need to conduct a forensic accounting investigation into the COVID payments. Whilst I agree those payments were required to ensure the viability of the national carrier we need to know exactly where each of those dollars went. If any of that money was not used for the purpose it was intended then it should be paid back with the appropriate interest rate applied.

I think we can put Alan Joyce and send hm home to Ireland for good. They did it to two of the company employees in my daughters company last week. More money was neeedd to change two flights to Virgin. It was their fault and it’s disgusting.😊

I won't fly with Qantas or any airline that constantly says that welcome to country traditional owners crap whenever you are coming into land.......

Had 3 lots of airline tickets cancelled during Covid. Virgin and Qantas gave flight credits only. REX gave us our money back no hassle no questions. Money back in our bank the next day. Guess which is my airline of choice?

Its incredulous that a public company can simply not disclose and then falsely under report contingent liabilities in excess of 300million dollars regarding 'owed' airfares and the guy who runs it doesnt get charged with criminal fraud.... regular shareholders, institutional investors and passengers should be rightly worried about why the leftie irishman is so coveted by the current ruling political party and not in jail.... !!!

If you are going to use AI to generate your subtitles, at least get one of your coffee runners to give the final cut a once over and check words like 'airfares' aren't being transcribed to "if it's. See 01:09

Mayme ASIC and the ASX should question their end of year figures given the question over all the "credits" they might have scrapped too early which would have reduced their liabilities and increased their apparent profits .

If Qantas listened then they would can the expiry of credits totally. United, South West and other majors have done this in the USA, yet here Airlines treat us like mugs. A bill of Rights for Airline passengers is required.

The damage that Joyce did to the brand is unforgivable. The whole board should resign too for allowing this man to destroy a once great airline Despite his feeling he was a hero, he has done nothing but harm. I will fly Virgin in Australia before Qantas in Australia & Cathay , Signapore & similar airline to Europe. The A380’s have never been maintained in Australia. The current work on those aircraft is done in the US. The government needs to call a Royal Commission or similar as to what money Qantas received during the Covid period . The opposition is being totally hypocritical in attacking the current government on this issue . There needs to be questions asked whether they got preferential treatment over Virgin & Rex, whether route cuts were used by Qantas to bribe MP’s. I stopped flying Qantas in 2010 after the fight from hell on Qantas between London & Singapore.

Having experienced bad - rude - service 26 years ago I have not used QANTAS since. I have only heard bad about it. I travelled via Singapore Airlines (used to be "a Great Way to Fly") and Emirates since and would certainly consider Qatar.

Joyce was a real champion. Skipped out with $24million. After finishing up 17000 workers. Ripping off customers over COVID. Typical CEO. How does he sleep straight at night. I hope when the time comes he had meet the Devil.

I became stranded in UK during Australia lockdown. They would not refund my return ticket, they took another booking to get home and within 48 hours cancelled flight and kept the money. Then I had to pay for my DEFAT return one way back on Qantas. They list my vote forever and they are not a safe airline any longer. Their safety was through Australian ground crew engineers etc not outsourced. They did not repay my tickets til more than 6 months each ticket booking.

Why is going on? Well IMO Qantas is ripping of Australians off on both domestic and in particular international flights. I recently did a few flight searches for flights from Australia to London return..lQantas was the most expensive in every search, even code share flights sold by Qantas were more expensive than booking directly with the airline providing the flight.

In 2022 I had booked a business class flight for $1200. One of the conditions of a Business class flight, for which you pay, is that the client can cancel it. I cancelled mine, and found that instead of a refund, I'd been given a "credit", which I could find in an account I'd never heard of, ie. paid for in one place, but credit given in another. I followed the links and found I had to create a login for this account, and that my normal Qantas log in wasn't sufficient. I persevered, and got stuck. I still don't know how to use that $1200. Last time I checked it was going to expire on 31 December 2023, but maybe that's no longer the case. In addition, the service standard in Business class flying has plummeted - to not much better than economy was before it also plummeted. When I pay for Business I expect to enjoy the flight and arrive well-fed and rested, but now I am thinking about how I can top-up the inadequate meal I'd got on a long flight.
