The gaming industry is definitely going through a rough time. I don’t like to act like I know things, but if history shows us anything, it’s that good times can follow tough ones. If we can make it through this and push back against some of the big egos in the industry, I think we could see better stability and a brighter future. One thing’s for sure; games have always been built by people with real passion and love. That’s not something anyone can take away from us.
@harveynewman14 күн бұрын
Couldn’t agree more Alex, games will always be here, people have been making games fuelled by just passion from the very beginning. We need to get some of that passion back.

I think the industry is changing to the point where the priority of delivering good product started to get sidelined, while customers still want a good product and feeling a disconnect between them and the developers. Indie and AA part of the industry are indeed trying to fill that gap that is currently empty.

Yerp Mako it’s crazy how much things have changed in so little time. We are growing as an industry and sometimes things need to get worst before they become better.

Just got back from the MDEV Conference last week. From talking to other devs, it seems there are still a lot of studios thriving, and continue to hire talent. I do like how people are starting their own indie studio and unionizing. It will set the standard for other studios if they are not willing to compete. Top talent will go somewhere else if studios are not flexible when it comes to remote work with better job security. Wish you well Harvey!
@harveynewman14 күн бұрын
Hey Christian. Yeah we hope we can make Proxima one of those studios. :) And I do think flexibility is key in order to attract the best talent worldwide nowadays. Things are very different after the pandemic and people are no longer as flexible to move around as they used to.

Thank u for shareing this Harvey : ) did not expect that Industry will change this fast, and workers are always passive in such an environment , what you said is really a good direction for artists to do something.
@harveynewman14 күн бұрын
Hey Zoo yeah people are quite passive normally I think it must have to do with the nature of the job. But I do hope this nudges people the right way as having an alternative to your daily job is always a good idea and something to fall back on. Thanks for watching and for the great comment.

100% agree. I wanted to be an animator since I was a child and I also knew the industry is super unstable. Started off as an animator for tv shows and saw that to be able to keep doing animation, I have to travel to different countries and tolerate contract work. I was also into extreme early retirement before FIRE was even coin. To keep things short, I think other building your own brand, as artists we need to think more about managing our finances and invest properly. The financial safety net will be able to tide over uncertain times like these or even provide options to say no to ridiculous working conditions.

Absolutely, having things go this badly in an industry that is usually quite safe will give perspective to many people out there. It’s incredible to me how many different ways to make a living are out there and you are still able to pursue your dream, as long as you have an entrepreneurial spirit you’ll eventually make it and hopefully thrive!

So like... Try to hear me out on this. I went to school for VFX and animation and I was the only one in my school that could actually animate. I originally went to the school to learn compositing. Once they started teaching me animation I flew off the rails at how I could actually achieve it. After school I got a job at a startup company where it was just me and my boss. He let me go after a year because he couldn't make any more money and I had to figure out something else. With me being new I didn't have the experience to land another job. The job that I had previously did not really prepare me for the next job. I got nearly nothing out of it. So I took up a job that my friend had as a door-to-door salesman. I'm so depressed all the time now because I get cussed out every single day for saying hello at a door... A few months ago I decided to try and make a animated film because prior to school I was working for myself doing visual effects for a fetish community. I was actually really really popular in it. I stopped because I just wanted to move on from it. It was mainly the stability of it that I didn't really like. I had to always find models to work with and that meant that I had to rely on other people which was really hard. But after school and after I got the jobs and everything I found myself really missing that life. It was a lot of freedom and a lot of peace and the money was pretty good. I have animation now and a few months ago I decided to try and enter back into my community. I wrote a script and I executed it creating a short animated film about 5 minutes long. It was really nothing special because I was just trying to test to see if my community would like to see animations from me because that would make me more stable. So far they love what I've produced and they're looking forward to more. I guess my point is that due to the rise of technology and AI right now. A lot of things are going to start shifting. I was able to make that little 5 minute animation thanks to AI motion capture. It probably would have taken me three times as long if I didn't have it. I think artists need to start realizing that they have real power here. I am able to now make money indefinitely into the future because I took the leap. It's the most stable thing in my life. Even after I didn't post for over a year... My fans were still there waiting for me... I tried to live a normal life. I tried to go to school. I tried to enter studio. I tried to work the regular job. I got f***** over and it put me in a really bad spot... I went from being content with life to hating life. Now I'm trying to get back to where I was but with animation this time. Animation gives me the ability to not stop anymore.

Thanks a million for sharing, that’s one hell of journey and a testament to your persistence. @@harveynewman Me too. Right now I love it and the potential of it all is fantastic. I sold it for 5$...probably could've charged more but oh well lol... And so far I have sold around 60 clips for a total of around 300$. It's not a lot but it's also not a long animaton either with not a lot happening. The next one should be twice as long and I'm going to sell it for a bit more than a dollar a minute. The goal is to make 10 minute long animations that I can sell for around 12-15$.

@harveynewman11 күн бұрын
Seki...I don't think you should comment without watching the whole video. The industry is still here and however bad things might be, there will always be a need for animators and the work they do, animation is far from being useless to me. What I'm saying in this video is that now that things are shaky in the industry, for the experienced professionals now it might be a good time to look at creating a side gig for themselves in order to relief the stress and instability of the games industry.
