Why is it that specifically jobs surrounding gaming, anime and movies can people not only not do their job but can actually NEGATIVELY affect the product and not only face zero punishment but by many weirdos be praised. It's like a firefighter not only not putting out fires but setting fire to forests.

People who want to change the culture hone in on these industries. Their mindset is if they can change the culture, than can change the politics of that country. That's why you see the rich ones buying up media companies and studios. Just think about how people feel and react when they have disagreements online. Now imagine if these people have unlimited money. Poor people think about reporting you to the mods. Rich people will TELL the mods to ban you. Rich people will buy out companies that aren't applying their moral values. It's the same petty mindset, just from a rich person's perspective. People who say "greed" are missing the mark here. When you have this kind of money, you stop thinking about money, for the most part.

"Do you consider this censorship?" Even if you could mathematically and organization wise prove it's not censorship, it still fucks up the author's personal touch and originl intent of his writing on the basis of "no no, don't fall in love with le poor digital pixel student, that's for creeps" which is peak stupidity. Some of these aren't woke. The real issue is that localizers have egos and want to be more involved in the creative process than necessary. Just translate the text. In some cases where there is no direct translation then you can use your creativity, but still change the original meaning as little as possible. On very rare occasions it is okay to localize. Example: maybe something is considered rude in the country of origin, but in other countries it is not. Then you may have to localize. Like pointing is rude in some cultures, but not in other cultures. If they just translate that someone gets mad because a character pointed then that could be confusing to an international audience. The audience may not understand why the person got mad. The problem is these localizers like changing things when it is not necessary. They want to think of themselves as artists and not just translators. And yes, sometimes they change things because of their political/cultural views, but that is not the core of the problem.

I don't feel it's necessary to change anything at all actually. If you're choosing to engage with another culture's product you should be prepared to learn about the context as well. Pretty much any person that watches anime at some point understood the Japanese senpai/kouhai culture aspect or Japanese honorifics without even having it be explained to them simply by consuming the media and being exposed to the culture itself. In your "pointing at someone" example, if the localization re-contextualizes it to something else that makes sense to them then the person consuming the media will never understand that aspect of the other's culture. I think it's infinitely more engaging to just translate every thing "as is" and let the person reading understand the context.
@TurntBucket
@TurntBucket 9 күн бұрын
@@fanis1414 I was talking more broadly about localization. Anime/manga have a unique situation because there are die hard fans and subcultures built up around the media. But, if I want to watch one Russian film I don't think I should have to already understand (or look up afterwards) the smaller details of Russian culture, especially if Russian culture is not very important to the story. If Russian films grew in international popularity and big fan bases started to form then naturally you should start reducing the amount that needs to be localized because the culture is becoming more well known and understood.

It isn't just Korean games, its basically all media from the east whether its games, anime, light novels, manga, etc. If it is officially done there is a good chance its worse than its fan counterparts. After having looked through many works, my assumption is its mostly a translation algorithm they run it through and then edit it so that people won't notice its MTL. Unfortunately most of them tend to be people that hate the fans of what they are working on and their edits reflect that.

with Dress Hina translation, I thought that despite what Sensei is saying about moths, everyone would still understand his true intentions, and that moths are just an excuse to smell her clothes
@Plasmon19
@Plasmon19 Ай бұрын
The scene as described is more an implication of him going through the clothes with the undertone of getting a feel for them without explicitly saying sensei is smelling them. There is something to be said about the scene in one of the early chapters where Sensei does the foot kissing which was completely changed to boot kissing that was explicitly shown in the anime. The English localizers purposefully dilute dialogue as well as scenes in the story. Nexon and other corporations have a vested interest in avoiding certain forms of controversy which may affect their bottom line in any given region and I think this has something to do with them tolerating their work being butchered.

Don't support any amount of censorship but companies normally use this as a starting block. "oh nice we got away with changing that next time we can change something bigger" As with any asian game if you don't want to translate it and keep the game 1 for 1 then you have no right to be publishing it because you don't appreciate the developers image. You are just a publisher not a developer you have zero right to change the game to your liking.

"chest?" Translation should be within context, and some languages things don't translates directly. What I think is that some translators are using google translate and they modify the sentence, but did not get the meaning and context right. I don't think this case is just on intentional censorship, it is also about not knowing how to translate properly. Nexon probably hired local Korean translators who don't really understand Japanese, and just use machine translation for the most of the part, then put whatever English word they could think of to suit the text.

This absolutely happens, and could for example be relevant in a couple cases here, I do think most of these localizers do abuse translation algorithms and their edits are honestly twice removed from the source. Yeah lost intent from the dialogue drives me up the wall. It's become increasingly obvious when things are changed. And I feel like the localizers are given too many liberties to basically rewrite what is essentially a game that is supposed to appeal to a specific demographic. No matter which way you swing it, the political agenda and intent are there. It may not be "woke" as some buzz word people like to throw around. But modifying entire scenarios is nothing short of amateur translating akin to something like 4Kids. I've actually considered many times simply learning other languages just to see things for myself. Because people just can't keep creative mediums to themselves. For now, I think it would be conducive to let Nexon understand the ire and frustration with the localizers. The en localizers trying to gatekeep the story for the en enjoyers. I might just change server rn if I could.

My theory is that they try to tone it down for the sake of neutrality and nothing touches minority headcanons, like the 1% yuri fanbase, I think its overly stupid, Sensei is what it is. Now, I am not familiar if shitalizers remain in touch with the community, but I remember Azur Lane also having really bad cases of things like this(if not worse). Azur Lane's localizing team gathered in official Discord, and the problem with Discord official groups is that they are usually echo-chambers, they are extremely one sided/biased and pretty much anybody thats there will just follow whoever is moderating blindly, if you complain WITH proof that there is a mistranslation they'll just keep on giving excuses and then dodge everything and move on, suffice to say the other members will pretty much jump on you. So, my question is whether BA's team is in similar groups and if it engages in similar circles with rodsucking behavior

For Ibuki’s line, it actually could be just a translation error, since “Ibuki is not for sale” is a very innocent line especially considering her characterization
@therandompersona
@therandompersona Ай бұрын
Especially because english is a context dependent language it's important to be as accurate as possible to the original message to represent the work. For example the inclusion of a moth portrays the character's action in a different light, that in the storage closet there could be insects from its disuse, thus the teacher's actions are logical and the fact that he smelled the clothing was incidental in seeing that it was clean and good to wear. The original however is more direct, showing the strong relationship between the two where he decided to take in her scent from these old clothes, in turn conveying a different dynamic between the two. It reminds me of a corrected Nikke line the the english version, where it was supposed to say a the character had heard of people engaging despite injuries whereas the english localisation said she engaged while injured which obviously have two wildly divergent implications, though it was eventually patched to be more faithful to the former.

I would really like to see the whole script including all the options before making a judgement. They might have changed things to make sensei less of a pervert, but also might have just shuffled the dialogue around to make it flow better in english. Also, do we know if they translate directly from korean, or from japanese?
@RevyaAeinsett
@RevyaAeinsett Ай бұрын
I don't think changing it to make Sensei less of a pervert is any better of a reason than any other. If the original writers want Sensei to be a pervert then I want Sensei to be a pervert. Not whatever some stupid egotistical localizer thinks is "okay". Copehuffing tourists always drop the "The writing was weird in the beginning because the developers didn't know what to do with Sensei" line. No, Sensei was weird because the developers wanted him to be weird. Sensei was an irresponsible otaku when he came to Kivotos, several student stories illustrate this. He's less weird now because he's matured while guiding the students.

You know it is kinda questionable what they greenlight for the translation or its morely a translation teams fault. its making Sensei a generic NPC at this stage rather having its own personality. yeah the Hina-chi one is from Kirara plus the JP Voice and english words doesn't really match the context at all. I do hope its just the translation team fault at this stage rather than the whole localizers fault. And we have literally a higher age rating than Nikke which is literally questionable why the game needs to censor it. iirc we have 2 versions (kid and teen) or was it dead due to certain issues like lacking of players in that version.

The Dress Hina translation to English still carries the same meaning.
