You mentioned register only in passing, but it is so important. Many parents are thrilled with their children's bilingual progress then suddenly when they visit the country, it becomes apparent that there are big holes. The correct register, tone, vocabulary for speaking to strangers, for example!

Yes, exactly! My son met a French speaker at the playground and he used the informal "you" form with the man. I was mortified!
