I think he is making a mistake here. The assets in personal name of parents will go to children's personal file by Hindu succession Act as Class-1 legal heir. They can't be 'transferred' to any HUF. If the assets were in name of Father HUF then they will remain in the Father HUF survived by 3 coparcenery children.

If it was only 1, then there itself exist no reason for existence of HUF, because assets can be transferred without any problem.

W.e.f. 6th September 2005, there need not be more than 1 male member or female co-parcener to form an HUF. (Therefore, an HUF as an assessable entity need not consist of at least 2 members-- even 1 member can form an HUF)

It is not a policy. It was an age old prevalent practice in India to have family businesses. The Britishers gave HUF a separate legal status for taxation purposes and the same thing is continuing today. Jains and Buddhists are also covered in HUF definition.

You've said that members can gift a property to HUF (I'm assuming by members you mean members and co-parceners). What if I have a flat in my name which can be transferred to my HUF. Will rental income from that be added to HUF's income. This doesn't sound logical. As per my knowledge, members of HUF can transfer money/assets to HUF but whatever gains will arise from that asset will be clubbed with member who transferred that asset. Can you shade some light here?
