The bottom of the flower stems should be trimmed while dipped in water. This is done just prior to placement in the arrangement. There are more if you search on the Internet.

You do not need the same material as shown. When you are out walking look for the beauty in any and all plants. You will begin to see possibilities in the most unexpected places.
