thanks for the video. Quick question, how is the voltage reduced when you run the fan on cool?
@mashy712 Жыл бұрын
the cool button is a switch to the coils which electricity would run though. Pushing the cool button pushes away the connection to the coils.

The thermal fuse is not usually there to prevent the air from getting too hot, it's there in case of a fan failure (partial or complete) which would prevent heat from exiting the coil area and cause the coils to heat up much higher than they are supposed to (possibly even to incandescence, or glowing red) which would cause a fire and or burn hazard.

I wish you mentioned which wire goes into the motor and which one into the switch - neutral or hot, isn't that another safety feature? (also, how does the "cool air" button work - doesn't that remove the heating coil from the circuit - how the fan will get the voltage down in that case?)

That diode in the coil not part of the motor bridge rect. is a cheaper way of implementing a half power setting, which would normally be created by a separate smaller coil, or a tap off the main coil. It works by half-wave rectifying the AC so it only gets power every half cycle as opposed to every cycle which limits the average power consumed to half of normal usage. This is a messy way of implementing half power mode because it causes noise in the mains and a net DC current draw from mains.

How do you make sure the bimetallic strip not conduct any electricity so it doesn't short ?
@Doom2pro11 жыл бұрын
Make sure you disconnect the main heating element and not the secondary heating element which is used to drop the mains voltage to 12-20 volts for the motor to run! If you disconnect this element, or it's supply (if it's coming from the main coil) the motor won't get any power!

Why would you disconnect any of the 2?

Mohan Kumar did you ever get a answer to your question about, can I remove the heater from the hair dryer? I just want it to blow cold air.
@oldscoolgaming.50405 жыл бұрын
If you know how to solder you could just take the power cord out of the dryer,solder the wires from the output of the switch onto the motor,solder some more wires from the input of the switch to a socket for a power adaptor to suit the voltage of your motor ,hot glue the socket into the hole where the old wires came out and there you go.or if you want you can just cut the end from the power adaptor and solder them onto the switch if you can't get a socket.

Our Conair 1875 hair dryer started to spit small sparks out of the air outlet end of the dryer. I am suspecting that the electrical contact points that he describes is the culprit. I took the dryer apart and the contact points are no longer true, flat and flush with each other. It appears that the points erroded at their edges causing a small gap that I suspect current is jumping across, causing the sparks. I'm thinking that if I can file/sand the points flat again that it will fix this issue but there's not a lot of material there to remove. I don't want to remove too much that it causes other unwanted issues but I'm curious to see if this fixes it. I think I'll try to search for replacement contact points and maybe just replace them but I'm betting that that's a long shot ! Anyone have any ideas?

I have a pretty old Con-air Hairdryer that went out today. I did continuity tests with a volt-ohm meter. checked the plug, switches, motor and Heater coils. and everything checked out there. then I tested the thermal cutout and it was OK. then the thermal fuse. No go! . so that's the end of that. I'll part this one out and get a new one. it would be easier rather then trying to replace the thermal fuse.

Of the two screws on the back handle f my Pro Beauty by Interteck the top screw will loosen but it is stripped and won't come out. Prying the handle apart and it appears it's glued. Cheap hairdryers come apart easily as this video shows but the expensive hairdryers have other tricks that prevent it from coming apart...glue, etc., but my issue is the screw that appears stripped. But it lasted more than 10 years.

The heating element is used to drop down the voltage for use in the fan. But what if you have cool air selected? The heating element will then be off, so how can it supply voltage to the fan?
@Murlockingqc4 жыл бұрын
If you look inside an hairdryer, or this video, you will see there's actually 2 size of coils. I believe the smaller one is for dropping the voltage. If you push the cold air button, you get colder air but you can still feel some heat coming through, the fan blow most of the heat away that's why it feels cold. He doesn't explain how the switches work, the secondary fire hazard safety devices and how the cold air button work :( I wish he did because he explain the rest really well.

How does the electric current gets converted from across to dc from switch
@Murlockingqc4 жыл бұрын
He explain everything in the video... the heater is a BIG RESISTOR, it reduce the voltage to 12V and the 4 diodes around the motor make the current only flow in one direction, AC = flow in both direction / DC = flow in one direction. The switch does NOT transform the current from AC to DC. The switch can handle high voltage current, don't replace with a lower voltage one or you might risk electrocution or you will blow the switch.
