Super helpful video, gave me confidence to dig deeper into a stuck ignition key cylinder - key would go into key-slot, but wouldn't turn. Key would remote lock & unlock, no problem. Neither vacuuming out the slot, nor using blown compressed air with a narrow snout into the slot removed any debris. Tried hair dryer heat on it 10 minutes, no efffect. Removed center console cover, but really wasn't looking forward to removing & disassembling the ignition / gear shift mechanism, dreaded not getting something reassembled right. As a last resort, I sprayed several shots of WD-40 into the key-slot, wiggled the key around for a minute, the key turned & car started after sitting untouched 3 months. Plenty of folks are quick to say WD-40 is a solvent, not a proper lock lubricant. But hypothetically, if your kid's Frosty, diet soda, energy tea or whatever finds it's way down that key-slot, a solvent may be a solution, at least near-term.

Thanks for the video , Mine wouldn't go into P and the key wouldn't come out. The yellow switch did the job and I am back to working fine for the time being. I'm sure I'll be back in there eventually. Nice to know whats in there and how it works. I don't like dealerships stealing from me. ( cheap plastic crap) Big thumbs Up!

Thanks for the shout out. The detent on the key barrel can only be pushed with the key in and turned to position 1.

@Les Flack I accessed a key barrel cleaning procedure from ‘Evilution’ resources (evilution.co.uk) and it solved my ‘key won’t turn at all’ issue immediately! I highly recommend it if you haven’t got it yet fixed in 3 months.

Thank you so much for this video. I changed my clutch and the shifter won't move. The Speedo displays first gear. So I'm going to open the shifter using your video to check everything out. I'll let you know how it goes.

@@LazloNQ hey I bought the whole kit but the one that fits the torx part of it is fine but the holes are too small for the nipple to go in so I literally drilled the nipples off and then used a regular torch but I'm telling you right now I bought the whole kit and none of them would fit on there they wouldn't go over the nipple I don't know what happened but it was a kid that covered all of them I was about to drill out the tip of them and make the nipple bigger of the the male part the female part bigger so I just drilled off the male part and use a regular torque she still wasn't easy but thank you very much I have to take that out to get the key cylinder out isn't that correct I tried to watch all your video earlier but I was driving and stuff but you have to you have to take that whole cluster with the shifter out right to get to take the lock cylinder out okay thank you if you get back to me

Thank you so much for this video (specially the drill hole) I need to work on the ignition barrel cus is getting stuck. the information out there about this part is shifty (no pun intended) 🤪 to say the least. The barrel is getting worst and worst to the point that I don't feel comfortable with it staying in there other wise I'll have to destroy it if it gets stuck for good. I was looking for info on how to open the whole shift assembly to get to the release pin on the back of the cylinder, but this is a way better idea to just drill a hole and get it out. Getting the seats out and dismantling the entire sitting and shit area just to get to the tumbler doesn't sound fun at all. It seems your car had that service done a while back and that's a clever way to get it done. There is no drill hole, you have to make it and I'll be doing that in a moment. Probably copy this hole since I am not even sure where the pin out is, I only have picture references, never done this before but this is pretty clever. ✌️

Hello, my Smart car would not shift out of park. I was able to access the yellow release button to finally shift the car and drive it with no problems. I bought a new shift assembly and installed it but will not shift out of park either. The yellow button does not help. Is the unit defective as I cannot get the shifter to move at all?

I have not scanned for fault codes but the only problem was the original shifter suddenly coming out of park until I used the yellow lever. The car drove fine otherwise. The yellow lever on the new unit won’t even do this.

Hello, my tumbler broke so it won't turn all the way to make the car start. Do you know a way to fix it? I called MB and they said they can order one all the way from Germany but it takes months to be here.

@@LazloNQ just the tumbler. You are right about the security because mercedes told me I needed to bring my driver license and registration of the car so they could order the part. I took out the tumbler and took it to a locksmith and he said he couldn't open it. I've tried lubrication, compressed air but nothing seems to help rotate all the way.

My key won't turn it all and I can't even remove the barrel out of the ignition switch. I called the Smart dealer asking how much for the barrel, and they said "$99 dollars but I can't sale it to you because you are not a Mercedes mechanic certified" what a smack on the face! Now I have to figure out how to remove the barrel so I can start the car.

It looks like the key does not have a chip in it, or does it?

Doesn't use a chip because the key needs to be programmed from a locksmith or a dealer. I programmed my own keys using a special scan tool.

A bit late but you need to remove both front seats and move the carpet to access the bolts , they are t-30 5point torx with a hole in the middle
