Engine indicators go back to the 1800's, and were first used with steam engines. The output is pressure vs. piston position, which can be correlated to pressure vs. cylinder volume. Ashcroft made them (the one I have used), as well as matching planimeters for measuring the area on the indicator card (which gives the energy per cycle, which can be used to determine power and efficiency). Large engines often have test ports available for each cylinder. Attaching the string to get true measure of the position can be an interesting exercise on some engines. Also Crosby, and a number of others. A LOT of precision tools were made in DDR back in the day. East Germany had the skilled people and help reconstructing that Russia didn't have after WWII, and micrometers, indicators, calipers, gauges,etc were made there and filtered throughout the soviet controlled states.

Very interesting this explanation related to the way the diameter of a hole was incrased by pressurising into it an abrasive liquid... as much as it was interesting to understand that tiny holes were drilled by EDM.... Mr. Pete, what is the smallest drill you have seen ? Most of the charts stop at number 80 drill. Harvey's tools is selling a german made one wearing the number 102 ( about 0.003 "). I work at an University and we have one of these attached to our extremely old Natural Gas engine that we use to show students how engines work. Ours is a single cylinder engine with exposed valve train and open crankshaft spinning a large flywheel. This instrument is connected to the cylinder head and the string you see is hooked onto the crankshaft. This will then produce cylinder pressure vs crank angle diagram. This is very useful for teaching and I can see how it would be used to tune and test engines.

Greetings Mr Pete, Very true, the indicator attaches to the "indicator cock" on the head of each cylinder. Using the spring constant (amount of pressure it takes to move a certain distance) the average area under the resulting line, and the length of the graph, the mean effective pressure can be obtained. indicated power, rather than brake power, can be found by multiplying the pressure, stroke, bore area, number of cylinders and rev's per second. This is for a two stroke, with a four stroke this number is halved. What makes this interesting is we now have digital versions that take a tenth of the time and store ask the data, and pressure sensors, so we can see from the control room what the engine is doing and make adjustments in real time. Thanks for all the great videos. Best regards, Brad

My apologies for the lateness of my post but have only now seen the video. The item is an Engine Indicator which is used for calculating the Indicated Horse Power being developed by (in this case) a large diesel engine, they were also used for calculating the I.H.P. being developed by Steam Engines. To calculate the I.H.P. being developed by the engine the area of the of the 'banana' shaped trace (indicator diagram) produced on the paper slip wrapped around the cylinder had to be obtained, this was done using an instrument called a Planimeter. As an apprentice marine engineer in the early 60's I took many of these indicator diagrams from a large marine triple expansion double acting engine to log the I.H.P. it was producing - this engine eventually found its way into the foyer of the Science Museum, South Kensington, London.

Talk as much as you want; you always say something worth listening to. Your videos are always the right length. The pressure-stroke area described by the indicator was a way to determine power output; i.e., "indicated horsepower". Thanks for another great video!
@MrArray19675 жыл бұрын
I might be way too late, and well then it's not the first time. I know what this is. In Danish it's called an indicator which measures the pressure in the cylinder of a (two stroke) combustion engine (maybe also a steam engine) as a function of the crank shaft angle and draws an indicator diagram. With an area planimeter the mean indicated pressure in the cylinder can be calculated (indicated) by means of the diagram. Different kinds of diagrams can be produced. Combustion pressure, compression pressure, charge pressure, exhaust pressure etc. can be established.

You just talk on, Mr. Pete. Those who exist 140 characters at a time in a shallow world of tweets can be pretty impatient. They do have options other than complaining: (1) turn off the speakers and guess what's happening, (2) close the video, (3) turn off the computer/phone and go meet a real person. A student once wrote me up for going "off task" in class...never did catch the connection when it came along later. Now, I have to admit, I have shut down some videos because I ran out of patience with lengthy, undirected rambling. Some can speak extensively and never say anything. Yet I never stop a Tubalcain video, no matter how far afield it goes. Your classroom and work experience make your delivery lively and interesting. Today, I stopped for some pretty bad pizza after tearing into a bad gearbox. Watched this video while eating. Same as having lunch with a friend. Good conversation, bad food...and now you need to teach me how to single-point a worm wheel on the Bridgeport! Your subscriptions have risen 2.5% since the recent 100,000 milestone, so complainers aren't the focus. Wish my investments were doing that well.
