I’m 81 years old and was exposed to jazz in about 1947 when Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, and Benny Goodman used to do commercials on TV advertising US Savings Bonds. From that point I was addicted! I even played clarinet in elementary and high school. Still learning at this advanced age!! Thanks for sharing!!

Jazz is the feeling of coming home, whether it's just the evening after work or the return after years away. Jazz is the laughing faces of your children, the smiling faces of your elders long gone, jazz is the familiar face you see in the looking glass. Jazz is a companion, a sibling, the world you love.

An intriguingly warm documentary that evokes dear memories even if I was not at that particular Kongsberg festival. Thank you, Bret, for this and everything!

Beautiful documentary! Documentário muito bonito! A "NRK" deve ter bastante material interessante. Agradeço a eles por terem essa "sábia visão". Obrigado por compartilhar e por seu trabalho de pesquisa e de manter o "espírito do Jazz" vivo. Thank you and God bless you! 🙏🎼

Some Jazz players (not entirely tongue in cheek ) ask the rhetorical question to young aspiring jazz students : 'What is Jazz besides 2-5-1s and Blues?' Others say Jazz needs 3 elements: Swing, Blues (or Blues Feeling) and Improvisation. But of course others will digress, beg to differ and include some elements and/or exclude others...Looking forward to watching, thanks for sharing, I can see already by the Mingus opening that it has some really historical footage.

That which cannot be spoke about must be passed over in silence. Or rather; That which cannot be spoke about must be passed over into poetry.

23:36 I don't like the clicks from the record scratch... but I'm going to look up Ed Thigpen's Action Re-Action after hearing this. I like their groove, the combination of influences, or what have you. Thanks.

Jazz is improvisation as the main bag and whatever non-James Brown groove you bring to it. It's a treatment, not a style, which at least 99% of people do not understand.
@GizzyDillespeeАй бұрын
You can emphasize the 1, and play a backbeat, unironically. It's just like the mid-90s, except a little harder and the looseness (relative to the 2010s) seems to be tempered by anxiety.
@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewtonАй бұрын
@@GizzyDillespee I played with Dizzy. He put his arm around me and told me that I played my ass off! But you can't use the "1", James Brown OWNS the "1"!
