I am most fortunate to have met Bhante G in 1993 in Erie, PA. I have done many retreats with him at his High View, WV monastery and just completed a retreat he lead at the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center this past weekend. He has had a profound affect on my life.

I have developed an appreciation for teachers that take the mystique and esotericism out of Buddhist practice, especially with meditation. These are skills that any person can develop; they should be introduced to people in a secular fashion at a much younger age. I believe that the explosion of 'mental illness' and the prescribing of mind-altering drugs is due in part to the general lack of knowledge about these topics which speak to our ability to become our own refuge in a chaotic, deluded world.

That is true, without this it would be very hard for many people to understand the nature of impermanance and to get into jhanas

Instead of debating with everyone, I think I'm just going to give this a try over and over again and see what happens, what experiences come out of it. I don't think anyone will ever fully know what we individually experience. I mean, this journey is an individual one, right? Though we may friends to walk with, walks beside, each of us has to take our own steps. No one can see through our eyes but ourselves. No one can feel pain for us, they can't say.. "okay.. you've suffered enough.. relax now, I'll take over from here"... and same.. No one can relax for us, or feel joy and happiness for us either. If someone slaps me in the face, who's to know I don't feel compassion instead of anger? I guess a good indicator or sign would be through my action and response. But.. eHh.. who knows, really? Except for me, of course.

His explanation of how to achieve concentration is very helpful. Also, the description of impermanance of everything is very insightful.. (the analogy with cycle of anxiety and relaxation in the cycle of breath is great). Highly recommended for restless people!

Yes, I haven't met up with a passage mentioning it so far too. But the aim in focusing in one particular point of the nostril is to make the mind sharper. Cause the more the point of concentration is small, the more the mind is bound to me sharp and concentrated. This is to serve this purpose that this is done so.

Samatha is the calm that can be obtained through any of the 40 kammatthana (objects of meditation). Samadhi is a very large term which embrace the jhana. Jhana is a very high state of concentration included in samadhi, obtained when all the factors of jhana are matured (called appana-samadhi).

Do we overcome the hindrances or in the process of singlepointed focus, we tend to ignore greed, hatred and doubt, and that the singlepointedness creates an environment where agitation and laxity do not arise?

Well today Buddhism is a very individual preach. Every monk speak their own version of Buddhism. After the600 yrs of maha parinibbana of Gouthama Sakya muni , a man called Buddhagosha introducing himself a enlightned being came to Sri Lanka and mixed his hindu / pranayama meditation and Mahavira's teaching with pure Buddhist teaching. I encourage you to first do your reseach on Mahavira's teaching. then listen to this monk again...

There is a video of this indian girl explaining this meditation/Jhana for pituitary gland meditation for height growth. You draw a red dot inside a black circle on a wall, sit in front of it and stare at it for 5 minutes followed by 2 minutes of closing your eyes. My question is can I do that jhana/meditation lying down on the side ? I don't have a chair, all I have is my bed.

The definition of jhana is quite contraversial. Bhante Vimalaramsi is against such one pointedness concentration. Instead, he defines jhana as level of understanding.

ONE SHOT : it's not possible another person to know whether the other person has achieved "Jhanna" unless you yourself have expirenced it as well as having gone thru many years of stringent practiced.
@charleswey4895

Jhanas are nothing Mystical or Magical, they are simply meditation stages recognized by the meditation practitioners. Anybody can attain four stages of Jhanas with little patience and practice and certainly any Thervada monks can attain all the four stages of Jhanas within a few years of their monkhood. Ven. Gunaratna has been a monk since childhood, I think he can go through all the four stages of Jhanas in few minutes of his meditation. Jhana doesn't mean Nirvana but you will experience a kind of Nirvana while you are in Jhana.

He doesn't even know what Jhana is, so how can he have attained it? Jhana is NOT concentration. Jhana is infused contemplation. The four jhanas are progressive samadhis, degrees of ecstatic absorption in the Stream, the Sambhogakaya, or Spirit-current.
