Lateral gene transfer is a way that unrelated species share DNA and influence the evolutionary pathways of each other. Also known as horizontal gene transfer, this process of exchanging DNA had a profound effect on the evolution of early single-celled organisms. But lateral gene transfer has also been observed in plant and animal species, and even in humans!
