Do you have family members living in the USA? Would you live there?

I'm finally returning from China after 4 years. it's beginners to stress me out. I absolutely dread returning and have nothing to look forward to; however, I will enjoy the food.

There are so many South Africans here in Chicago and Chicago's northern suburbs-especially Jewish from Johannesburg. South Africans are kind of disconnected in the States because the English just blend into the majority race/ethnicity/culture. I occasionally run into Afrikaners, who tend to be the most involved in the local South African Facebook groups and meetups. They tend to confuse Americans more than South Africans of other backgrounds. I've met some Indian South Africans here. They also tend to blend in with Americans who trace their roots back to the Indian subcontinent. I've only run into a black South African here once. They are definitely here, but definitely far fewer in number. The same goes for coloured South Africans. Anyway, the universal South African emigre experience in the USA is an appreciation of the freedom. You have so much more freedom to buy consumer goods-mostly significantly less expensive. The vast majority of the country is incredibly safe. You have the freedom to take late-night walks, leave your doors unlocked, have your valuables on display, and you are highly unlikely to face an issue unless you are in a particularly unsafe area. In the States, most dollar billionaires go around without any security detail. The things that seem to shock/disappoint South Africans are the higher cost of housing (generally extremely expensive in the most vibrant employment hubs), the higher cost of groceries, restaurants, private education (public education is free and often very good), and service providers (housekeepers, babysitters, cleaners, landscapers/gardeners, etc.). Some of my friends have also said that they are upset by the extreme prevalence of Type A personalities in U.S. culture. I always tell them that Canada might be a better fit. 😂 The USA is a culture that rewards success and ambition. It is not the best country if you are content with a middle-class or average existence.

By the way , Rhett and Claire. I (Jim) went to school and graduated from my Alma Mater Boston College at the Heights in Chestnut Hill. Spent fun times at Conte Forum watching Hockey and Ice Skating. Hope to have you come to Washington D.C. where we can show you around close to where we live. All the best💗💗💗 Harriet, Jim and Yuki. Richmond, Va.

It’s great to see how much you love America!! Most Americans have no idea how well they have it in the United States. America has provided the world so much security, law and order - there is no comparison to any other country. In regards to the safety of South Africa - I’ve done research and it’s sad to hear you need walls and fences around your property for safety -

Hello Rhett and Claire, this video brings a lot of home back to us. Much of Harriet and I (Jim) life was spent in Boston ,just ten miles outside (Needham and Dedham). Dedham happens to be two towns away from Westwood. Harriet and i owned a home in Dedham and moved to Richmond, Va. about a year ago because Boston, like many big cities, has become expensive. And yes, We ate at The Toast Office Diner. Another diner to consider when you are in Westwood again is the 50's Diner (Dedham). Great food at a Great price. Also, check out Chiara Restaurant, It's a wonderful dining experience in Westwood. A question Harriet and I would like to ask is what do your family members in Westwood, Ma. do for a living? Looking forward to Part 2. Sending you lots of love💗💗💗 Harriet, Jim and Yuki. Richmond, Va.

You need to be really careful with AirB&B in NYC. Almost all of them are illegal, and you do run a risk of it being a scam or getting kicked out. Also, you are probably better off keeping it to yourself while you're here because a lot of local residents are very anti-Airb&b
