Every idea, number, concept, thought, theory, mathematical equation, abstraction, qualia, etc. existing within and expressed by anyone is "Immaterial" or "Non-material". Modern science seems to be stuck in archaic subjective ideologies that have inadequately attempted to define the "nature of reality" or the "reality of nature" for millenia. A Paradigm Shift in ‘Science’ is needed for humanity to advance.

This position does not denies any god or soul. It just says that if there is a god and/or a soul then that god and/or that soul have to follow the fundamental laws of nature. Like Newtons laws of motion, the laws of thermodynamics, conservation of energy, conservation of information and stuff like that. I for example like to think of the sun as a god. Our scientific understanding of the sun pretty much fits the description of a god.

Not exactly though. You can destroy the medium on which the information is stored like the hard disk for example. But the information itself will remain. It could be encoded on something else like in the form of programming code written on paper or may exist in the mind of the programmer himself. Either way information is immaterial and is independent of the physical medium in which it is written or encoded. I believe consciousness is immaterial as well but I concede that its nature is an open question. We cannot make definite scientific conclusions if consciousness remains after death though various religions say it does. The afterlife may be beyond the reach of science and is something we will have to see for ourselves once we die. If there's nothing, it doesn't really matter. If there is one, you better hope you have prepared yourself according to the precepts of your religion if you have any.

At this point with all the evidence for Concsciousness as being fundamental and spacetime emergent, Dawkins should be having fits. 🤣 "Materialism is untenable for several reasons. One of them is the internal contradiction: it defines matter as something that is independent and alien to consciousness and has no inherent qualities, and then it tries to explain the qualities of experience in terms of something that was defined as having nothing to do with experience. And that failed to do that and then we wonder why it failed." Bernardo Kastrup.

Seems like a gray area when you start to consider the complex plane. Humans can’t perceive the happenings here with our own senses, thus we use mathematics and technology. Does the manifestation of “real” occurrences as a consequence of complex actions deem complex behavior a physical thing? Or does it presumably lie outside of the physical since it’s not something we can directly perceive? Oohh, thinking about this more deeply, I just opened a can of worms when it comes to time. Einstein developed the space-time relationship using the conversion of the imaginary number i into a real value, which gives us a way to perceive said relationship despite not actually being able to “see” time like we can spatial dimension. So from a materialistic standpoint, is one led to believe that time really doesn’t exist? I’ma stop before I start sounding too ridiculous. Cheers.

I don't have a problem with materialism. There could be a material god, that is all powerful and knows everything within the material universe. He would have to be composed of matter and/or energy, and be able to interact with matter in order for us material beings to know anything about him. This posited existence would have to be demonstrable, like any other phenomena. Then again, nobody really wants a super-being for a god, they want the made-up kind that isn't part of reality.

@@vladmir161 Materialism is actually the most dogmatic view of the world, because it states that consciousness and subjective experience come from matter and that reality is outside mind. However, everything we perceive, feel, think is fundamentally in mind. Material reality must therefore be a total metaphysical abstraction devoid of experiential qualities, and this reality is by definition inaccessible, even when we die. It would be much simpler and parsimonious to admit that all reality is in consciousness, which also solves the hard problem of consciousness (why aren't we p-zombies? The emergence of qualia from matter, according to materialism, is an appeal to magic).

Most materialists are open to new ideas or things about our reality- if it's actually provable and testable, infact I imagine materialists to be the least dogmatic if their worldview was shaken up or needed correcting. Differences between materialists and spiritualists when it comes to their dogmatic beliefs comes down to whether they believe something is true from physical evidence or emotional evidence.

@@Poliostasis This identity between brain and mind hides under the carpet the whole ontological question. Which ontological category (mind, matter, X...) does each of them belong to ? Is it the same or not ? I should also prevent a confusion between the study of how things behave (science) and theorization, guided by logic and epistemic tools, about what things are (metaphysics). Materialism is THE least parsimonious metaphysical paradigm humanity has ever thought of, since it implies that the borders of our brain-generated experience actually encompass the entire observable universe. The physical world should therefore stand beyond, while remaining totally unaccessible, even after our death. Such a postulate violates epistemic sanity (Occam's razor) to an astonishing level. We don't need it, we can indeed make sense of the whole in terms of mind (monistic idealism, that came to resurrection especially thanks to the work of Bernardo Kastrup). The hard problem of consciousness is merely an artifact of bad thinking, arising by refusing to recognize the obvious contradiction at the core of its presupposition.
