What’s the difference between Midi, Midi 2.0, Midi XG, and Midi GS? What’s the easiest way to explain that Midi is not sounds but musical information? For example, some people still think MIDI means “generic midi sounds”, and no concept of its programmability.

I understand it like that - MIDI is not digital format but it is "recording" of digital musical instrument like synt, digital format is mp3 where you can have also analog musical instrument made into digital format by converting. For example the sound of Doom is midi, the sound of Quake is wav, what is the difference, is one digital and the other not? I mean not the original sound but how it is recorded and stored for playback? In Quake there is conversion what about in DooM?
