Wow I’m so glad I came to the comments section, it feels like our own little support group. I definitely have mono. I’ve had swollen lymph nodes and fatigue for about 2 months that finally turned into a full blown, bed-ridden illness. Fever, excruciating pain in the throat, chills, aches, the whole nine yards. Doctors misdiagnosed it as strep and I took antibiotics which of course didn’t work. The worst of it seems to be over, but I wonder when my appetite and energy will return. Some of the folks on here have such horrific complications, I’m terrified. I miss having energy the most, I haven’t felt “energized and healthy” for months, really. I want to be proactive. Anti-virals don’t seem to be a solution, but what about other supplements? Steroids? Any exercises? Lymphatic massages? I simply cannot let this take over my life. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey there, I was found to have had mononucleosis pretty recently after a month of being pretty sick. I only ever had a minor sore throat but the worst thing was the brain fog and fatigue. As someone who's always super energetic and motivated, this really took a toll on my mental health specifically anxiety. Everyday I'm kinda freaking out cuz the severe fatigue has almost been there for 2 months. I do want to say that it has improved a bit, but hearing stories about chronic fatigue syndrome or people having this for years has scared me. I'm only 17 and I'm aware it's a bit irrational but is this normal and am I most likely gonna be okay?

Hearing you say that it lasted 6 months for you honestly calmed me down with thoughts of "what if it doesn't go away" and "I might get chronic fatigue syndrome" which I'm aware is irrational still but my brain is very strange haha. @Bobby Light Hey there, I apologize for not responding to you for literally 4 months, I really didn't want to for a while cause If I'm being honest, it hasn't gotten better and I didn't want to stress out anyone or be overdramatic. Tomorrow will be 1 year since I've gotten sick and I'm still dealing with incredibly intense brain fog and tiredness. I can barely think, I can't go outside often due to light sensitivity, focusing on basic tasks like cooking and reading requires a lot of effort on bad days. I'm also always absent from school. I went from getting an award in English Language Arts to barely even graduating. And the worst part is: I barely get any sympathy from people that I'm not SUPER close with (including teachers). "That's not a real thing" is something I've heard on two occasions after I mentioned Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Most people assume I'm being lazy or that I'm depressed. I have tons of motivation to do so much, but can do so little. Even after everything, I'm still able to lot with my music career from just from pure passion alone :). Thankfully, my symptoms aren't physical, just cognitive. I 100 percent would never say that THIS ruined my life.....but it sucked out a majority of the joy from it.

I just had Strep throat last week and now I’m having mono for the first time at 20 and it’s horrible! The tonsil stones are insane and the pain in my throat has literally caused me to punch a hole through one of my doors! As someone who typically eat a lot of food, I now struggle to even get my spit or water down, much less even soft food! The things I would do to have the crispiest chicken sandwich or juicy burger right now would be insane! So far, I’ve noticed hydration, using ibuprofen only for reducing swelling and Tylenol for the pain helps a lot and is better on the liver and kidneys to alternate, honey or green tea and honey has been insanely helpful, and warm soft food like oatmeal! I still can’t get rid of these massive tonsil stones though, which I can absolutely feel! I’ve tried q-tips with a some water on them, and I even bought a water pick and it only gets the really tiny pieces out! Warm salt water helps severely with the relief though! Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Good luck to everyone else!

I had the worst time with this disease. Infact I'm 21 yrs old and the first time in my life I got hospitalized was because of this damn disease. I stayed there for a complete week. It's just that I had 2 major symptoms: fever ranging between 102, 103 and worst worst throat pain in my life. I wasn't even able to open my mouth for talking, forget about eating or swallowing and this continued for like 2 days even when i was hospitalized but thank the doctors I was diagnosed after 2 weeks of symptoms and took medicines and IV injections. Now, I'm much much better with no fever or throat pain. It's just the my spleen and liver are enlarged amd that's pretty nrml in this infection. So If someone is suffering from this disease just mentally prepare yourself for excruciating pain in your throat and it will probably last for like 2 weeks and don't skip your medicines and one tip that do your garles daily atleast 3 times or 4 times that will significantly reduce the pain. I wish you speedy recovery ❤

EBV infection can affect a person's blood and bone marrow. The virus can cause the body to produce an excessive number of white blood cells called lymphocytes (lymphocytosis). EBV can also weaken the immune system, making it more difficult for the body to fight infection.👍

Knew something was bad wrong when I took a shower and could not lift my hairdryer. When I went to a minor med clinic, my WBC was 24,000 and they told me to get to the hospital. D’oh! Mono spot test positive! I was like “huh?”. Hadn’t kissed anyone recently, didn’t drink after people (eww). I was in a job that I hated, and did not realize how much the stress had worn me down. Doctor said it was likely from someone who was infected with sneezed or coughed on a door handle or whatever. My immune system stood down and let that virus wreak havoc. Have this now. Been to the er twice and urgent care once for pain. It is no joke. Im so mad. I don’t vape or smoke so i dont pass e-cigs or vapes around. I am surrounded by people who do, the also are generally around people more and more sexually active and yet somehow i got mono. Like wtf bro? Lol. Life is dumb but I’m finally getting better. Throat pain /is/ the worst symptom. I found salt water to hurt more and cold packs on the neck after tylenol/ibuprofen helped. Also just push through and drink. Set a timer once every thirty minutes to take a sip. It sucks but you’re likely spitting up a lot of spit and you can get dehydrated quick. If it’s too much don’t feel embarrassed to go to the er for something like morphine. I had to twice and it was the only way i was able to drink and eat again. Btw im not shaming my more sexually active friends or really care that they smoke. Its just odd that though they should be higher risk i still got it somehow and not them lol.

There is no exact cure or treatment for mono, however, the best thing you can do is get lots of rest and drink water even if it hurts. Talk with you doctor about what over the counter medicine you can take to help relieve some pain but for me, rotating between Motrin and Tylenol every 3 hours has been a life saver, good luck!

Is there such thing as permanent mono that sleeps and wakes up? 😭 I've had this since I was 5 or 6 years old and the disease comes from time to time, especially when I'm stressed or in my period. My fever was so high I had to mix ibuprofen with naproxen. I'm 21 and still get it at least 3 or 4 times a year. My body has grown so many antibodies that my throat doesn't hurt as much but I hate the fever. Doctors don't believe me either. My skin is getting yellow for so much ibuprofen. How long will I live? I'm also not contagious. I've kissed my boyfriend, shared utensils and he hasn't gotten it ever or my family. When I was a child I had cough and severe sore throat but I only have fever and fatigue now.
