I’ve never had a traditional or an electronic compass actually fail, but you have to be aware of what can induce a false reading. That includes shakers that include a magnet, electrical connection to a torch, DPV motors, or anything that creates a magnetic field.

Telling a student "how stupid can you be" does not sound very nice, though.

I have exactly the same compass, but the 'brass?' buckle on the strap corroded away years ago. I've replaced the strap with something similar to the ones that come with Shearwater Perdix/Petrel - and now it's perfect! That said on dives when I don't take the compass, but then wish I had (yes there's a lesson there!) I find the compass on my Perdix to be usable (I know you're not a huge fan of computers though).

The one with yellow bezel from China (on the preview) doesn't work at all. The magnetic card in these can't tilt, so if you hold it tilted it just points down instead of north and you don't know it until you are absolutely lost. It's probably the worst compass that you can get.

Just know your gear and be sure on how to use it before your dive!
