This video was what I have needed for years. Finally a clear explanation. I suspected that I was alto/contralto, but was dubious because my deeper sounds sound really (weirdly) deep, while I can still reach high mezzo notes in my head voice (although I may struggle). Because of this video I think I got the confirmation that I'm an alto. This is really helpful for my songwriting. Thank you!

Getting airy is a sign of not developed technique to sing those notes. I'd say a sign that you are definitely a baritone would be having your secondo passaggio low so that you can't go to high tenor notes in full voice.

This is such a great video. We are built to our own specs! Teachers spend so much time training to a particular range that singers miss out on the expansion of their range because they aren't trained to breathe and move through every register. I practice all of the soprano, mezzo, and alto....knowing when to switch register, breathing and tone is the tricky part.

I have been pushing my range for years, to the point where I can't even talk sometimes afterwards (these occasions usually involve alcohol and karaoke). Just listened to this Jeff. So very interesting. Also what you read out from the book. Not only have I learned a whole lot more about singing since taking these lessons with you, but also taken in a lot of theory, which I feel is equally important, being the foundation of singing. Goes along with everything, everyone needs to learn basics before they can make something of anything they choose to do. Thank you very much for your time making this latest video. I love this. I find that range is in large part behavioral. Do you agree? The voice types, after all, aren't just defined by high and low points: many a soprano can sing a C3, and many a baritone can sing an A5. I have eked my voice quite a bit; for me though, it *was* a freeing. I didn't like to sing in the octave and a half of the baritone range that people said I should have, a range and vocal weight that ironically enough just kept me more from singing or speaking as I wanted to! If you watch my videos though (or see my face), you will be confused by this statement, as I no longer vocally resemble this unless I choose to. Sopranos are a sort of head-and-mix-dominant voice, which is unique among the types... their head voice actually behaves easily with full-voice resonance. Mezzos meanwhile live more among the chest mix. Contraltos are uniquely pure chest dominant in a way females generally are not. Tenors and "true" countertenors especially often have a thinner and brighter voice than contraltos and work well in the mix, baritones are chest dominant, and along with basses even mix some fry resonance in - mainly basses and bass-baritones have that full-voice resonance in fry, at least as the books go. But we all have all four registers... and fry and flageolet can definitely grow the voice's range and change its resonance to thinner or thicker. "Overuse" of chest will thicken the voice; "pathological" overuse of falsetto will thin it out and atrophy the chest voice. But what defines the misuse of the voice if it has these at its disposal? Why can't a supposed baritone use mixed voice or a soprano go into her chest voice, even bringing it up as an alto would? Hell, these are *essential* tactics in pop music. And it is pop music where you find fully resonant four-octave and even five-octave ranges that confound the classical ear. But even classical singers never were held down by fach when you look at the greats: Joan Sutherland, Maria Callas, Jessye Norman, Shirley Verrett, Franco Corelli, Placido Domingo, Enrico Caruso... even Cesare Siepi had an F#4 as much as he had an C2... You find these three-octave behemoths, Rosa Ponselle had the chest voice of a tenor. Yet she was a soprano. Oh, a dramatic soprano... but still a soprano. Why is it that the C5 and C6 of tenors and sopranos were practically unheard until Rossini? Oh, how is it even a feat if their voices are supposedly *meant* for those notes? Do they not recognize how few people talk at C6, or how heavy full chest voice is for C5? Even notes like F6, G6, A6... hardly heard till the 20th century, in pop or classical, likewise for notes well above A4 in chest. And I wouldn't be surprised if it's likewise with the first octave. Yes, for some, for many... nature lends them to a certain way of behaving or seeking out their expression. But, especially in my boat, you have to gain perspective, that your voice is a divine gift, and that it is yours to feel empowerment, conviction, comfort and facility in... You do not have to be Mariah Carey and you do not have to be Nina Simone. Hell, you can be both if you wish. Your voice is yours, and like anything of you it is categorizable over time. But it is yours to own and to do with... This is why I take it as much more of one's free will than it's given credit for. And I definitely think the types have their use; each one is so interesting. Thank you so much for this video, I hope you get to see my reply...

Thank you for the clarification. I started out singing in a choir and noticed changes as I grow older. I normally have a 'mousy' soprano type of voice when I was young but that changed when I turned to 15. I noticed that some notes that usually were easy for me when I was young, became harder to execute. I didn't experience the cracking of the voice, but I do feel like my voice wont go higher anymore. When I was singing I measured the notes that I reach and noticed that G4 became so hard to hit, unless I push my guts out. However I learned that I can sing that note in a different voice quality. That time they refer to it as "falsetto" others refer that as "head tone". I was able to sing E4 to E5 with a feminine sounding type of voice in pop chesty quality. During that time, having lack of formal training, I exercised the "falsetto" and my lower notes but in both different technique. Having dual type of voices became popular in our culture that we embraced it and develop a term for it "Doble Kara", literally meaning 2 face because of 2 types of voice quality sounding produced by 1 person. There even came a time there were singing contest to showcase dual voice. I never knew the concept of "break" or "passagio" because there was no internet that time. I really badly want to understand the concept of how to unify such voices and how to cross that note G4 having 1 sound instead of having 2 sounds. I wanted to have an easier sounding projection and a full chesty pop voice on the notes F#4 to B4 well because, I dont know. Maybe it was the pressure for men to sing good or even high. It was then when there was a song that we are required to sing in a full chesty male sounding A4 , that made me realize there is something wrong with my technique. After following you from some quite time I learned to free my voice in such a way it felt like my passagio is shifting higher from time to time. I was able to sing G4 fluidly with 1 type of resonance then the difficult note became B4. Slowly but surely I learned to sing G5 smoothly without pushing it. I was able to move fluidly with 1 type of voice and my dual voice singing became more smooth. My total voice range expanded greatly. My lower extension notes, fry quality can hit C1 (but I dont think C1 to C2 is useful though, nobody claps on low notes in our culture) My lowest notes before were F2 but now I can hit D2 (C2 with effort) My highest notes before were E5 but not I can sing in G5 (A5-B5 with effort) A5 seems to be a new passagio to me. Thank you for your materials.

I will save this lecture as a go-to when I work out my range. I can sing comfortably across 3-4 vocal ranges. However, I am not a lyric soprano nor a baritone but can sing well into the vocalización patterns of those classifications. When working with ensembles, I tend to get placed into a flexible, mezzo range so that I can do the “heavy lifting” across the harmonic needs of the song. My musical mentor, years ago, classified me as a dramatic soprano for recitals and events. When classifying myself for MT productions, I would list “Alto w/Soprano extension”. I’m certain you have helped many with this video. Thank you Jeff. This is so insightful and a lot to incorporate. 🙏🏽

I like exploring my voice and here's my observation. Lower C#2 I have fry, D2-F2 it's kind a mix of chest and fry, F#2-G#2 it's good I can sing comfortably but can't make them loud. A2-D#3 are my very usable low notes and to go higher I need some head resonance. E3-F#3 Before when my resonance was totally off I could drag my chest weight pretty comfortably. G3-A#3 Pre-premo passaggio I guess. I can sing it with medium volume just fine but it's hard with low volume. B3-Eb4 are hardest notes for now. Well I can take B3, C4 somewhat but higher I want to push. At Eb4 I have a break though sometimes I can push a little further. Am I baritone?

Not sure really, I will continue to practice singing over the Pasaggio in your exercises and focus on Vowel Alignment and Air Flow. Identifying Registration Events is new to me. Looking for a Song that puts it all together for me where I can comfortably sing out of the Bass\Baritone and into the next Registration. You should know that, I do well with the Exercises for Bass Baritone over the Break, however, as a performer with an Acoustic Guitar I find it challenging to sing a song that encapsulates the ranges without not singing the song as it is sung for an safe cover. Note: I do struggle with engagement at times due to a variety of factors. I will continue to work at it. Thank you very much.

My vocal range usually extends from F2 to E4 (sustained). I occasionally hit D2 and F4. I don’t really know if I’m a Bass, ‘cause I have a hard time covering songs for baritones yet I don’t really have “boom effect” or that “deep power” of a Bass (say Avi Kaplan or Tim Foust).
@definitelynotofficial73504 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's kinda my situation too, it goes down to E2 (I can hit D2, but it sounds kind of foggy, on a good morning I can get to C2 but again, it doesn't sound very good and mornings are cheating anyways), and even though I "can" get to A4, it doesn't sound good. I mean, my voice just doesn't sound good anywhere lol but it sounds even worse up there. My most comfortable range is pretty low, and I usually speak at around F#2-B2. But my voice just doesn't really have that bass feel. Also I think it's a bit weird that my talking voice is so close to the lower end of my register, but maybe that's normal?
@ДмитрийКончаков-п5ы4 жыл бұрын
@@definitelynotofficial7350 I thought I'm a bass baritone but lately I start to doubt. I also talked in this area F#2-B2 but working with resonance but if I want to talk resonantly not loudly but everyone can hear me clearly who I'm talking to I need speak higher like A2-D3. Lower notes are harder to make louder. If I make them more resonant I just strain they're not designed in my voice to be loud. I think it's due to the fact that I was shy I talked very quietly so my voice droped down the basement because it's comfortable. Now I reshape my voice to speak higher and it feels pretty good honestly plus with efficient resonance. Now I even kinda want to talk more. So now I'm inclined to think I'm just a baritone.

I've always been super confused about my voice type. When I initially started off with classical music, about 12 years ago, my teacher told me I was a lyric soprano. One time though she noticed how resonant my voice was down in the lower register, and instantly I was a contralto :)) Funny thing is up to that point she hadn't even considered taking my voice below a B3 to see what it would sound like. To be honest when I was singing soprano parts I always felt she was forcing me to 'open' up my voice too much (i.e. make it sound a lot lighter than what it actually was). I've always thought of myself as a mezzo. I can comfortably belt up to an F#5 (chest voice) and go to a D6 on head voice. Because my voice sounds so full and heavy though (or to quote my sister, I sound like a man), and my lowest note goes all the way to an A2. I'm very confused. Oh well, in pop music it doesn't even matter that much does it?

I hope it helps! Figuring out fach is delicate in the best of scenarios. Too frequently we jump to conclusions and try to fit the mold that we've decided upon. Great video Jeff. When I first started practicing I thought that I was a bass or probably a Baritone. That thought came to me, because I realized that when I sang, I spent so much time between D4 and E4 notes, way before I knew any about belting.. It was strange, F4 was nothing for me to sing but above the G4 was were I had difficulties.. One year on and I found out I'm actually Tenor and all of those notes are not that much of a problem at all, in fact I can go up to an Bb4 with little effort , Although I can sing a B4 and C5, it's just that I feel I need to have the same ease with those upper notes similar to those notes below them. And this might sound rather odd but, I feel that it is just a little bit more trickier to navigate the secondo passagio smoothly. Like moving from chest to head.

I really enjoyed this video and it was very interesting. I am a mezzo-soprano, but I can sing in some of the soprano range. I have a question, how do you know your subcategory of your voice type? (ex. Lyric/dramatic/coloratura)
@JeffRolka4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking! The more you practice alignment and efficient, balanced singing the more the nuances of your voice will emerge. As they do, take note of them, literally or figuratively, and notice those that are with you frequently. For example, you might notice richness in some area, or an ease of vocalization in another. Perhaps once your registration event practice becomes habitual, you notice that you really enjoy the physical experience of singing in one tessitura over another. Collate those observations and they will define your fach and subset. Great question! Thank you! Jeff

Hi Jeff, can you tell me which voice belongs if the range is C3 (low) and G5 (high note) . Thank you 💕 Your videos are really helpful. God bless you more. 💯👌

So, this doesn’t really clear things up for me. I’m definitely not a tenor, for I can’t even sing an G4 without pushing, but my voice does transition around D4. I need to get heady from there. However, C3 is a very comfortable note in my range and I’ve even been able to sustain an A1. I think my primo pressagio is around B2 to A2. Can you speak to this?
@JeffRolka4 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. That you mention pushing suggests to me that your registration events are not as balanced or seamless as they could be. Defining fach before registration events are optimized is more or less just guess work. Balance your phonation and registration events and your fach will reveal itself. Having said that: The d4 secondo passaggio suggests baritone, but a primo passaggio of b2 or a2 is inconsistent with any fach. For reference, a basso profundo's primo passaggio will be at g3. All of that speaks to what I mentioned initially. Vowel alignment and registration event practice will reveal your fach. If you're 'pushing' (by this I mean feeling it in the throat - a tightening, if you will) anything in order to sing it, your phonation isn't as optimized as is necessary to adequately define your vocal range designation.

Jeff Rolka Okay, I just looked up what a primo passaggio is, and, yeah, I will take into consideration what you say about defining fach, but I feel my middle range around G3 or A3. Technically, because of how low I can go, I technically classify as a basso profundo, but I want to find out for sure.

@@lopezmcanimations4399 when I started I strained at even G3 but now this note is easy, it's a bit challenging to sing it freely contected with a low volume, but at medium volume I can go easily up to B3. I can take C4 somewhat comfy but higher it's a ceiling.

Hi Jeff, I found your channel recently as I am trying to at least learn how to sort of sing, since it will help with my music etc, and it's definitely the best and most helpful videos I have found so far! However I have an issue with my voice, I find it very difficult to keep my pitch stable and make it stop wobbling. It just seems very hard to make it behave! What would you recommend for that?

Great question! If you're new to vocal technique or singing in general, it's almost certainly going to be airflow related. Even if you have studied breath or breathing in the past or with other disciplines, it's different. Appoggio breath management will help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3KYoX6mppypf6s kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6GufmOcgrNmi68

@@JeffRolka Thank you, you're too nice! I did some solfege classes because I had to some years ago but back then I didn't put any effort into it because I found it boring and because I thought I could never sing but now I feel like I should have... Bottom line is, I didn't learn much and I'm practically new to this. I will definitely check out these videos!

I'm afraid it doesn't work that way. I'd have to work with you, and get your vowels to align before your fach would really be evident. You can, however, reference this for more info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fach Best! Jeff

I am a baritone and using my headvoice has always been a concern. Whenever i try hitting high notes, my voice box hurts. I am afraid that i might damage my voice box. Should i continue warming up using your drills even if it makes my voice box feel uncomfortable? Thank youu

Great question. No. You should stop. That's not your head voice. It's something else. Head voice doesn't hurt. Best, Jeff

This video had to have more of the terms we use in order to accurately describe what makes one fach different from another. You can easily look the words up however, and with a little practice they'll become second nature! Alternatively, I include a glossary in my guidebook to my KZbin channel, available on my website. Best, Jeff
