Great informative essay! It’s interesting to consider No Country for Old Men and neo-noir, but it totally works. I’ve always considered it a neo-western movie. You did a great job highlighting the malleability of this genre and what it means for us, though!

tbh i see it as both neo-noir and neo-western, that is by far one of my favourite movies

The MOST neo-noir film is Body Heat. It is essentially an update of Double Indemnity, often considered one of the first film noir movies, with some plot changes. Even its director, Lawrence Kasdan, stated that Body Heat was inspired by Double Indemnity.

Getting into noir and neo noir movies in a young age really showed that I have a good taste for movie also, that it shows intricate flaws of modern era society not in a very ficcional yet accurate to some events and how we as an individual react and response to it

Fantastic video! I'm hoping to make some kind of a video essay myself in the near future as I've been working on learning editing, and this is super inspiring to me. I also loved the montage at the end, awesome way to end the video. Keep up the great work, I really enjoyed this.

Great video essay and editing! Just one suggestion, the audio transitions (eg. Narration from no background music to added soundtrack, or narration to no narration aka just music) can be a bit smoother. Can’t wait to see more!

@ErgieTalks what is that shot from at 6:41? It is such an iconic shot and I know I've seen it before but I can't place it. Ten minutes of googling "revolver rolling down arm" isn't refreshing my memory. The color grade and the mask make me want to say John Wick but I can't seem to find anything there either.

Calling John Wick noir is a real stretch. Apart from the clothing and sets, nothing else really connects.

Great analysis of Film Noir genre, but you forgot to include "Deep Cover" from 1992, directed by Bill Duke with Laurence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum in the leading roles. The John Wick movies are more like graphic novels on film with a main character with no humor in elegant clothing in dark, but beautiful surroundings.

Knives Out and The Matrix are definitely not neo noir. Casablanca is not an example of Film Noir. You should have searched deeper for true neo noir examples. There are plenty of them.
@zlynch172 Жыл бұрын
Casablanca as film noir is debatable, but you could make a similar argument for most films in most genres. Capital 'G' Genre is defined by artistic movements within the film industry, and there are fuzzy edges on everything, because art is influenced by other art. Knives Out and The Matrix definitely borrow some elements of film noir, even though they may not be "Film Noir" or "Neo-Noir". There aren't many movies (especially modern ones) that neatly fall into genre boxes.

Sorry, but I don’t feel that this well-made video shows us much about neo-Noir or the original Film Noir, either. It touches the surface of a lot but offers no depth as to what it is. Many of the films you refer to have aspects of noir, but aren’t themselves noir. Given that there are many neo-Noir films available, why did you choose to ignore them and deal instead with more peripheral films? Every film that has a detective of some sort or deals with a crime of some sort, ends up with a claim of being Noir. The original Film Noir ended with 1958’s Touch of Evil; all films of a similar type thereafter are neo-Noir. The difficulty with Film Noir is that it’s a style as much as a genre, so has few, if any, actual rules. Westerns and Musicals have fairly clear delineations, unlike Noir. This has led to mass claims of Noir-ness, as there are for SF, for example, or Horror. These days Noir means everything and nothing at all. The term is almost useless as it no longer means anything at all, it is so debased. There are no end of war films, and it’s astonishing how many are claimed to be anti-war, on the basis of nothing at all or showing the usual huge numbers of dead. The Dark Knight was an interesting twist on the previous incarnation of Batman, which was meant to highlight the vigilante aspect of the character, with the artwork of the graphic novels reflecting this mood. The films were a fudge, with him seen as on the side of the police and society, using the dark visuals for pure style and not for the emphasis of the anti-social vigilantism on show. They are interesting films, but are not neo-Noir. Please, if we are to have visual essays on these topics, can we stick to the subject matter and the films that prove the point, and ignore the films that have claims to aspects of a genre, but not the meat of it.
