What is non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) and why is it so important?
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis is an extremely important, under-discussed and underappreciated concept, both from a weight management and health perspective.
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis is just a fancy term for all movement outside of formal exercise. If running, cycling, swimming, weightlifting etc are classified as sources of exercise activity thermogenesis, non-exercise activity thermogenesis is all other movement. Walking, fidgeting, maintaining posture, carrying, cooking, cleaning, etc. All of these things bundled together make non-exercise activity thermogenesis the largest contributor to total daily energy expenditure that you are in control of on a day-to-day basis.
Let's discuss:
- Why it is so important from a total energy expenditure (calorie burn) perspective, and how it relates to the how much energy we use on a daily basis from the other form of physical activity, exercise
- Why non-exercise activity thermogenesis is trending downwards over time and why this is considered to be a significant contributor to rising obesity rates
- Why non-exercise activity thermogenesis is extremely multifaceted and impacted by a wide number of variables, including leisure time, occupation, local neighbourhood, socioeconomic status and even climate.

Videos like this are a must watch for many! Enabling NEAT seems to garner serious longevity benefits too.

So glad to hear I'm not the only person who has had randomly wrestle a racoon that broke into our home. NEAT was way up that day 😂

Been getting 10k steps + lifting 3 days a week. Used to do just the lifting while being sedentary and it was useless

Fantastic video I have started to implement those small changes that add up. I walk around a garden when reading a book make sure to always take a stairs rather than a lift etc. Life has become very lazy day to day it's not 1 hour in a gym but 23 hours outside of the gym that matter more.

Everyone bicycles in Europe instead of using a car, that solves a lot. Also people are working often flexible hours and often go to the mountains to enjoy nature. I think this is a US thing or where countries don't have routes for bicycles only or not a good train transportation. Taking a train, bus or bicycilinh to your destinations can add up in your yearly calorie burning.

I think it is more than country dependent. For example some people live in cities where walking and cycling is common and driving with cars is actually surprisingly difficult because of traffic, other people live in areas that are far more commutable. Likewise, there are some areas where people might just not want to walk around the neighbourhood from a safety perspective. For example in London it’s very easy to walk around a lot, but there are some areas of London where I know my girlfriend wouldn’t walk around if she was on her own, so if she lived there it would hinder how much she walked 🙂

Ben Carpenter Yes true but I was more looking at average. I think theres even data on how much obesity is in a country’s and often because people have bad transportation system! Im from a country where its impossible to live without a car like in Iceland 😆 There is higher rise in obesity there because of that.

Thank you for this video. I have a desk job and am still getting 10,000-12 ,000 thousand steps per day but so worried to gain weight. Work from home days is easier. I’m hoping me just being an active person in on top will also help

How can you handle changing from an active job (stocking shelves at walmart) to a sedentary job (front desk at a clinic)? I have never had a sedentary job before and am already "overweight " for my height, despite being active on a daily basis. I'm so worried that I'll blow up and lose my stamina when I change jobs.
