There's another benefit to consider. Considering it is what brought me here. Swedish researchers established that after four months of Nordic walking, diabetics had improved glucose levels. Why? Insulin resistance is lower in fast-twitch muscles than the heavier slow-twitch muscles in the lower body. That means that insulin works more efficiently in the upper body. So diabetics who are exercising to lower their glucose levels are getting more bang for their buck by getting the upper body to absorb and use the excess glucose.

This is very good for obese people, overweight or individuals who have some joint issues.

It's a good idea for people who might be a little unstable on their feet too. Calories burned are higher since you're using arms. And useful to hike with the poles. Resembles cross country skiing

There is one more advantage. The sticks can help to keep dogs away.

Hey Everyone, this really is a legit thing developed by Swiss Olympic cross country skiers to stay in shape during the offseason. It really does help sculpt the upper body and relieve foot knee back pain.

The best thing about getting older is that you do not give a crap about righteous little nobs who tell you that you look ridiculous. Who cares? You walk your way, I will walk mine. And I have a weapon against trail muggers, you do not.

@garfieldshiela7433 In the US, it is still regarded as a "senior" thing (unless you are up in the mountains.) We are always the last to get in the groove of what other countries do. 😅

I agree with the critiques. Only looked this up because it popped up in my news feed. Great for people that can't normally walk, but if you're a completely functional person, you're being ridiculous. Just walk fast, then you'll have the same benefits, probably with better posture too. You'll still be exercising your fast twitch muscles by walking fast, it has nothing to do with the poles.

Pushing off with the poles propels you forward so you walk faster and increase your heart rate

Did you know that, walking fast 1 hour you loos 280 calories and the same hour in nordic walking 400 calories. Do tou think that in Sweden, Finland Noorway only older people do Nordic walking why is this ridiculous.?

@@lydiaking6341 I've looked at some of the studies and it's mostly quackery and pseudoscience. The only real benefits I derived is that it allows older people with balance issues to walk longer and at higher intensity levels because of the stabilizing attributes of the polls... It also trains people to adopt an efficient cadence when walking... That's it.
@brittniep9219

@@EnduringArts those are positives though…? Any activity that improves cardiovascular health and is sustainable is better than nothing. Any exercise that keeps ppl motivated is far more successful than yo-yo high intensity exercise.
