Wow! Great explanation of exactly what I’m experiencing. I had my surgery on Friday morning (9/9) and today is Thursday (9/15). At this point my biggest worry is remembering not to touch or rub my eye as it feels PERFECTLY NORMAL!! I had some ring around lights, scratchy feeling where the insidious is, and some flickering on the outer edge of my vision. But as of this morning that is ALL GONE!! One thing I’d like to mention that you didn’t is the difference in colors. Since I have cataracts in both eyes I had no idea my color perception was off. Now WOW!! No more amber/yellowish tint to everything. I’m amazed at how white and clean everything looks. I had no idea I had such bright Sigurd trim molding in my house. Anyone nervous about undergoing the procedure, don’t be as soon as the relaxing medicine when into my IV I remained alert and able to converse and follow commands but I simply didn’t care. My procedure took about 30 min. In total I was at the surgicenter for about 2 hours. Can’t wait to get the other eye done. Oh, and I could read the eye chart very well the same day as my surgery as my post op appointment

It’s great that you explain the significance of new flashes or floaters as possible retinal related complications. As one who had retina detachment after a cataract surgery, I reached out to my doctor and was “assured” that it was probably some “vitreous detachment”. Not untill I told him that I see a black curtain covering my lower field of vision, did he see me. It required a Vitrectomy, a gas and a buckle to save my vision…

This is a wonderful video. Can you add the most common complications of cataract surgery being opacification and cystoid macular edema. What the symptoms are, what causes them, who is at increased risk and how they are treated. I had my cataract surgery in Rhode Island and was not educated about these common complications and had both very soon after the surgery in my left eye. I thought I was going blind. It was so scary. Dr's need to educate their patients personally, not just put these complications in a consent form with general terminology. THANK YOU!!!

This is the best, most helpful cataract surgery video on KZbin! Thank you so much, Dr. Ficco! My doctor did not address the issue of expecting the flashes and vertical lines in the peripheral vision. When I first saw them, I though oh, no, something is wrong! Also, like you said, now that my vision is clear, I can see my floaters so much better! 😄 Wish I had known this beforehand so that I wouldn't have been needlessly alarmed. I'm about to go for my final exam, and the flashes and vertical lines have disappeared and my vision is better than it's ever been. I can see differences in color that I couldn't before. The blues and whites are beautiful!

Oh my goodness, I just had cataract surgery 2 days and my 1 day post op yesterday. I told my doc about the shadow and flickering I kept seeing. She said that should go away in time or you get used it. I didn't feel very assured leaving and went on the hunt for information from others of what they experienced after cataract surgery. After a day of searching, this morning, another day later, I found your video. I have to say I feel SO MUCH BETTER ... especially listening to you talk about the shadow and flickering. The flickering is a little better but I still see the half arc on the right of my right eye. It affects my peripheral vision. But when I'm busy or watching a movie at night, I realize I don't notice it and then I notice it. Because I wore progressives before hand, I definitely will need glasses, as my left eye (being the non-dominant) needs glasses. The reason the right eye bloomed was due to gas inserted in my eye during a macular hole repair. Currently I'm wearing 6 year old glasses for computer and reading so that my left has the benefit of also seeing well but these glasses are old and there 2 more after it. Because of the repair on my right eye (being dominant) and now the new implant, the 2 glasses after the current ones I'm using are not usable ... So it's quite a conundrum. I'm told I cannot entertain new glasses until 4 weeks out. I've an appointment already made. The whole process was amazing and pain free and your video just made my morning better. Thank you so much for this.

His description pretty much matches my experience on my left eye. With the recovery to 20/30 vision taking about 2 weeks. I dad not have dry eye are pain with ether eye during recovery. My right eye was quite different. I had a near total white out at day one which cleared over the next 5 days to a soft focus image. The soft focus slowly improved over the next 8 weeks and stabilized with 20/30 vision without the soft focus. With the right eye I saw little green lights dancing as the lazar cut up the lens. I did not see this on the left eye. My Right eye was done first and the left was not done until 9 weeks later. I had the 1 day the 1 week a 1 month an a 2 month follow up before the second surgery and I'm scheduled for a six month because of the left eye problem. Overall my vision is doing well and would do it again. I just wish I had found this site before surgery.

I had my right eye done this past Monday...today is Wednesday. I'm amazed at how different everything looks! The procedure was painless and quick and my vision in my "new eye" is brighter and sharper. The only way I can explain it is the difference between the headlight cover (yellowed) on an older car and the headlight cover (clear) on a newer car. I haven't had any pain or other issues. I'm thinking about getting my left eye done...not for a cataract, but for an astigmatism....same procedure. My only problem is that now I can see the dust on my furniture more easily! 🥴

Very informative video!! Had one eye done on 6/12/2024 and the other 6/18/2024 My right eye had really no issues except for the flickering and the stretch of the lights as beams. The beam issue went away but the shimmering is minimal. As for the left eye… the cataract was just forming. I have scratching and it hurts where the incision was placed. I still have the light beam but not as bad but the shimmering is annoying. I also had a scratch and corneal edema. I am taking drops and Refresh eye drops to help with the healing. My incision on the right eye was healed the next day. I didn’t realize how bad my eyesight was UNTIL I had this done. I CAN SEE!! I wake up with clear vision, can drive and read. Now for the small print, I will need to use some type of reading glass which I’m ok with. I’ve been with glasses since I was about 10/11 and this is freaking amazing how bright everything is! My house is clean or so I thought. Can see every speck of dirt 😂. I would do this again even if I continue to have the shimmering! I do have the monofocal lens and I know I would t be able to deal with the halos all the time. Good luck everyone!

I had cataracts removed last October 2022 in the Nuffield England. Since I had it done it has never stopped stinging hurting and all sorts of horrible sensations in both my eyes. I wish I had never had it done. The surgeon that did the operation does not want to know and I have had to go to the NHS for help.

Extremely helpful. Question: I got premium IOL implants and my vision at 1 week was 2020; had 2nd implant and after couple days vision is 1st eye is not as sharp as it was; now blurry, cannot read close up on laptop, paperwork as well as I could a week ago. What is going on and should I be concerned?

Thank-you for this informative explanation of cataract surgery . I live in Alberta, Canada, and will have to go to my opthamologist by bus, a long ride from where l live. This part, l am nervous about more than the actual cataract procedure. I am looking forward to having my cataracts removed. Sunlight, abd even the indoor lights hurt my eyes. I watch T.V. wearing sunglasses. Again, thank-you for your explanation of cataract surgery. I have macular degeneration, as well, which will be attended to later on. Any advice you might have would be greatly appreciated. You could send the message to " Suzi Q. Thanks. !!!

Hello Doctor, An interesting information collection. I had one eye operated on 10 days ago and have gone through what you have explained. Each day after the operation my vision has improved. The colour from my eye now shows white paper as white and not have a green cast like the other eye has. Wearing my old reading glasses I can now see the pixels on the computer screen. All looks very exciting and promises detail vision when the other eye has been operated on as well. Thank you for your explanation. Regards

I had both eyes done and the right eye was very quick to adjust but the left was foggy after three days but I was told the cataract in that eye was worse, which of course I knew, so the swelling will eventually go down. I had Trifocal Vivity and the sight out ways the cost, and no fogged glasses while wearing a mask is priceless. Now to train my brain to stop trying to reach out to get my glasses in the morning.

I had surgery this past Aug.(2022) It is now 1/21/2023. I could see a lot better before the surgery. I was told that because I didn't have money for the "good lens" I would have to wear glasses. I was used to being able to see up close and I didn't want to wear glasses for close up but only for distance as that is what I was used to. So he said he could set them that way. Unfortunately and apparently he doesn't do it this way often enough to really know how. I can hardly see at all. my eyes feel stressed like I haven't had sleep in 48 hours. they are so distorted that I see as though I've had the flu ever since the surgery. I don't have the flu nor have had but I see through my eyes as though I do. I am hoping the glasses will eventually help my eyes not be tender as of now all these months later, I can hardly touch my left eye.

I had my cataract surgery on my left eye done a week ago. Within one day I could see so much better, with very little irritation and/or discomfort. I'm seeing my surgeon next week and at that time will assess whether I need the right eye done too (most likely will.) I've had many surgeries done throughout my body my entire life and all I can say is I wish every other surgery was as easy as this.Thank you so much for your clear, concise and reassuring advice and tips. It's truly wonderful when things finally go smoothly for a change.

I had cataract surgery both eyes about 8 weeks ago. Got a new eyeglass script I got iol set for distance but still need .75 in left eye and 1.25 in right eye. I was -3.50 and -3.0 before surgery. Did they underestimate the power of lens why would I still need glasses for distance ?

Great, informative video. I’m 4 days post second eye with multi focal lenses. My distance vision cleared nicely at day 5,.Two weeks later up close not great.( hopefully just the brain adjustment thing), 4 days post op second eye now, very different, Still very sore and red, vision is blurry, but not as grainy as day 1 and 2. I think my eye was injured with the speculum and hopefully just needs more time to heal. Great idea- before surgery, print out some eye drop charts so you can check off each time. It gets a bit confusing in the period of time where you will be doing both eyes.

Thank you so much for this video. I had my right eye operated on 23/6 and had no pain at all. My left eye was done on the 2/8 and on the first day I had extreme pain and my pupil was very dilated. It was explained to me that I had scarring on my corneas and that was the reason. I did have the scarring removed some years ago but perhaps it was not all removed. I contacted the surgeon who reassured me and as he predicted the pupil went back to normal the next day and the pain was gone.

Your comments would be appreciated: I have had experience & recovery of eye surgery therefore I have some knowledge of the time period and process required for recovery. First procedure was for removal of a pterygium, then after a period of 2 years I had LASIK correction achieving mono vision (left eye for distance/right eye for reading). 20 years has passed and now I am looking at cataract surgery. What issues should I be aware of as I consider having surgery. I have no current discomfort or gritty eye issues only loss of focus in my reading eye which is progressively becoming long sighted and the left eye is not as sharp as it was in its long sighted ability. Nature has determined as a consequence of ageing that a return to status quo is the norm

I had cataract surgery very recently and I also had a retinal detachment in my left eye back in 2007, which is also the same eye I had the cataract surgery. Right now my left eye is still blurry and the distortion from the retinal surgery, (sclura belt) makes images seem narrower than normal. I figured that as much when the cataract was taken out, so I can now see clearly but the distortion remains the same only more clear now. However, what I've noticed is that when I look at white objects or even a lighted room, I've noticed that my left eye sees it more clear, the whites are more white. In my right eye, the image seems a little more dull. The whites are not so white. It's like looking thru a slightly dirty window and cleaning one side and leaving the other side dirty and then standing right up to the window and the left eye sees thru the clean sided window and my right eye seeing thru the dirty side window. Is this normal? past doctors did say I had cataracts in both eyes but my left eye is worse than the right eye. My doctor who examined me said he will only do surgery on my left eye because my right eye is still good. but with the surgery, it seems more pronounced. It does bother me. Will this condition improve or will it always be there? Thank you for your time in this matter.

I also had a retinal detachment only a week after the cataract surgery. I experience same symptoms of shadow in the temporal area. Similar to what you described. I attributed it to negative dysphotopsia. But maybe it is something else. Same here waiting for it to improve. Did you notice it after the cataract surgery or only after the retinal detachment?
