Wow! Great explanation of exactly what I’m experiencing. I had my surgery on Friday morning (9/9) and today is Thursday (9/15). At this point my biggest worry is remembering not to touch or rub my eye as it feels PERFECTLY NORMAL!! I had some ring around lights, scratchy feeling where the insidious is, and some flickering on the outer edge of my vision. But as of this morning that is ALL GONE!! One thing I’d like to mention that you didn’t is the difference in colors. Since I have cataracts in both eyes I had no idea my color perception was off. Now WOW!! No more amber/yellowish tint to everything. I’m amazed at how white and clean everything looks. I had no idea I had such bright Sigurd trim molding in my house. Anyone nervous about undergoing the procedure, don’t be as soon as the relaxing medicine when into my IV I remained alert and able to converse and follow commands but I simply didn’t care. My procedure took about 30 min. In total I was at the surgicenter for about 2 hours. Can’t wait to get the other eye done. Oh, and I could read the eye chart very well the same day as my surgery as my post op appointment

This is the best, most helpful cataract surgery video on KZbin! Thank you so much, Dr. Ficco! My doctor did not address the issue of expecting the flashes and vertical lines in the peripheral vision. When I first saw them, I though oh, no, something is wrong! Also, like you said, now that my vision is clear, I can see my floaters so much better! 😄 Wish I had known this beforehand so that I wouldn't have been needlessly alarmed. I'm about to go for my final exam, and the flashes and vertical lines have disappeared and my vision is better than it's ever been. I can see differences in color that I couldn't before. The blues and whites are beautiful!

This is a wonderful video. Can you add the most common complications of cataract surgery being opacification and cystoid macular edema. What the symptoms are, what causes them, who is at increased risk and how they are treated. I had my cataract surgery in Rhode Island and was not educated about these common complications and had both very soon after the surgery in my left eye. I thought I was going blind. It was so scary. Dr's need to educate their patients personally, not just put these complications in a consent form with general terminology. THANK YOU!!!

It’s great that you explain the significance of new flashes or floaters as possible retinal related complications. As one who had retina detachment after a cataract surgery, I reached out to my doctor and was “assured” that it was probably some “vitreous detachment”. Not untill I told him that I see a black curtain covering my lower field of vision, did he see me. It required a Vitrectomy, a gas and a buckle to save my vision…

Oh my goodness, I just had cataract surgery 2 days and my 1 day post op yesterday. I told my doc about the shadow and flickering I kept seeing. She said that should go away in time or you get used it. I didn't feel very assured leaving and went on the hunt for information from others of what they experienced after cataract surgery. After a day of searching, this morning, another day later, I found your video. I have to say I feel SO MUCH BETTER ... especially listening to you talk about the shadow and flickering. The flickering is a little better but I still see the half arc on the right of my right eye. It affects my peripheral vision. But when I'm busy or watching a movie at night, I realize I don't notice it and then I notice it. Because I wore progressives before hand, I definitely will need glasses, as my left eye (being the non-dominant) needs glasses. The reason the right eye bloomed was due to gas inserted in my eye during a macular hole repair. Currently I'm wearing 6 year old glasses for computer and reading so that my left has the benefit of also seeing well but these glasses are old and there 2 more after it. Because of the repair on my right eye (being dominant) and now the new implant, the 2 glasses after the current ones I'm using are not usable ... So it's quite a conundrum. I'm told I cannot entertain new glasses until 4 weeks out. I've an appointment already made. The whole process was amazing and pain free and your video just made my morning better. Thank you so much for this.

His description pretty much matches my experience on my left eye. With the recovery to 20/30 vision taking about 2 weeks. I dad not have dry eye are pain with ether eye during recovery. My right eye was quite different. I had a near total white out at day one which cleared over the next 5 days to a soft focus image. The soft focus slowly improved over the next 8 weeks and stabilized with 20/30 vision without the soft focus. With the right eye I saw little green lights dancing as the lazar cut up the lens. I did not see this on the left eye. My Right eye was done first and the left was not done until 9 weeks later. I had the 1 day the 1 week a 1 month an a 2 month follow up before the second surgery and I'm scheduled for a six month because of the left eye problem. Overall my vision is doing well and would do it again. I just wish I had found this site before surgery.

Thank you for the answers. I was wondering about some things which turned into worry. My Doctor did a great job on my eyes, but not answers forth coming of some of the things which happened after surgery. They told me and gave me a sheet of things not to do. Things like keeping my eyes from water. Lifting heavy weights. Not to bend down. And take my prescribed drops. They didn't tell me about the halos around lights. Sometimes I get that and sometimes I don't. I also saw a shimmer off to one side of my left eye. But not when they did my right eye. Which made me worry. Now I see shadows I guess you would call it. But my vision is heaven. Just somethings make me worry. I've been back at work now for a month. I don't have the words to describe how much happier I am. You eye surgeons should be blessed.

I had my right eye done this past Monday...today is Wednesday. I'm amazed at how different everything looks! The procedure was painless and quick and my vision in my "new eye" is brighter and sharper. The only way I can explain it is the difference between the headlight cover (yellowed) on an older car and the headlight cover (clear) on a newer car. I haven't had any pain or other issues. I'm thinking about getting my left eye done...not for a cataract, but for an astigmatism....same procedure. My only problem is that now I can see the dust on my furniture more easily! 🥴

Why didn't you mention corneal edema after surgery, which is a common occurrence which causes cloudy vision? It usually resolves itself in a few days, but can last much longer, requiring correction by an eye specialist. You really should have included that.

Very informative video!! Had one eye done on 6/12/2024 and the other 6/18/2024 My right eye had really no issues except for the flickering and the stretch of the lights as beams. The beam issue went away but the shimmering is minimal. As for the left eye… the cataract was just forming. I have scratching and it hurts where the incision was placed. I still have the light beam but not as bad but the shimmering is annoying. I also had a scratch and corneal edema. I am taking drops and Refresh eye drops to help with the healing. My incision on the right eye was healed the next day. I didn’t realize how bad my eyesight was UNTIL I had this done. I CAN SEE!! I wake up with clear vision, can drive and read. Now for the small print, I will need to use some type of reading glass which I’m ok with. I’ve been with glasses since I was about 10/11 and this is freaking amazing how bright everything is! My house is clean or so I thought. Can see every speck of dirt 😂. I would do this again even if I continue to have the shimmering! I do have the monofocal lens and I know I would t be able to deal with the halos all the time. Good luck everyone!

I've had many surgeries done throughout my body my entire life and all I can say is I wish every other surgery was as easy as this.Thank you so much for your clear, concise and reassuring advice and tips. It's truly wonderful when things finally go smoothly for a change.

Thank you for answering my question about the flickering. I wanted to see if I could find an explanation on here instead of freaking out and calling the surgeon. Everything is pretty good but still a little hazy but I’m only 4 days post op. Absolutely no pain and my eye itself look’s totally normal! I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing and fu on June 27. Thanks for explaining my concerns. 😊

@Millard Iverson would you share what IOLs you had implanted please? I'm leaning toward the monofocal
@millvee10053 жыл бұрын
@@mooncow5493 I was implanted with "Toric IOL" lenses. I had cataract and astigmatism in both eyes, since the surgery my vision is 20/15 in my left eye and 20/20 in my right. I can see as far as the eye can see with no blurriness or affects from the sun rays. I only need over the counter reading glasses for reading certain things in my phone but no glasses for my I-Pad. I highly recommend those lenses. It took about 3 weeks for my eyes to feel normal from the surgery.

@@millvee1005 Thank you SOOOO much for your reply. I'm so happy for you! I Pray to be Blessed with that same outcome. I will have my 1st eye pre-op tomorrow and very nervous. I hope I can achieve your same outcome. Other than adding the astigmatism toric correction, is it correct to assume you recieved the standard monofocal IOLs? Not of the fancy false promises & expensive multi-focal variety?
@millvee10053 жыл бұрын
@@mooncow5493 Hoping not to confuse you but yes it was the standard toric IOL to correct my astigmatism but to also rid my eyes of the cataract in both eyes. If you do not have any other eye issues you will be totally fine. Before the surgery they will put lots of drops in your eyes to numb your eyes and will slightly sedate you, you will not experience any pain and the procedure will take about 20 minutes, they are very efficient. The vision in your eye will be blurred for the rest of the day and you will take 3 different types of drops for at least 2 weeks. For my left eye my vision was superb the very next day then a month later they did my right eye which took about 2 days to see clearly. I understand you are nervous but trust me you will be totally fine and will enjoy clear vision. Everyone is different and the healing stage varies but you will start seeing great from 1-3 days. I hope all the best and please keep me posted.

Thank-you for this informative explanation of cataract surgery . I live in Alberta, Canada, and will have to go to my opthamologist by bus, a long ride from where l live. This part, l am nervous about more than the actual cataract procedure. I am looking forward to having my cataracts removed. Sunlight, abd even the indoor lights hurt my eyes. I watch T.V. wearing sunglasses. Again, thank-you for your explanation of cataract surgery. I have macular degeneration, as well, which will be attended to later on. Any advice you might have would be greatly appreciated. You could send the message to " Suzi Q. Thanks. !!!

What is going on and should I be concerned?

Really emphasize that it's very uncomfortable trying to sleep the first night. I had tearing up throughout the day after. Also, make sure you have food already prepared so you don't have to do anything except put it in the microwave. I've been given antibiotic drops and steroid drops. For me the recovery is worse then the surgery. Let's see how I do on the second day.

I had cataracts removed last October 2022 in the Nuffield England. Since I had it done it has never stopped stinging hurting and all sorts of horrible sensations in both my eyes. I wish I had never had it done. The surgeon that did the operation does not want to know and I have had to go to the NHS for help.

I am 27 and got a cataract surgery on my left eye. My doctor/surgeon told me after 24 hours that I don't have to wear my eye shield anymore. The day after my surgery I went to see him for my post op appointment and he took my eye shield off and threw it in the trash. I'm on my 5th day of recovery and I'm kinda worried that maybe he shouldn't have done that, and maybe I should still be sleeping with the eye shield? I don't know. I also rubbed my eye today for the first time and am now worried that I might have messed up my eye. I wish he didn't take the eye shield away ):

Thank you so much for this video. I had my right eye operated on 23/6 and had no pain at all. My left eye was done on the 2/8 and on the first day I had extreme pain and my pupil was very dilated. It was explained to me that I had scarring on my corneas and that was the reason. I did have the scarring removed some years ago but perhaps it was not all removed. I contacted the surgeon who reassured me and as he predicted the pupil went back to normal the next day and the pain was gone.

Great,informative video. I’m 4 days post second eye with multi focal lenses. My distance vision cleared nicely at day 5,.Two weeks later up close not great.( hopefully just the brain adjustment thing), 4 days post op second eye now, very different, Still very sore and red, vision is blurry, but not as grainy as day 1 and 2. I think my eye was injured with the speculum and hopefully just needs more time to heal. Great idea- before surgery, print out some eye drop charts so you can check off each time. It gets a bit confusing in the period of time where you will be doing both eyes.
