Thanks for a good presentation, one point I noticed is that while the one side of OPC is standard (i.e., the OPC side) the device side unfortunately is NOT STANDARD at all. The reason I think so is that to connect to a particular PLC siemens for example I have to install the driver for that particular protocol for example Siemen S7-200 or Industrial Ethernet or S5... protocol. Notice that none of the above protocols will help connecting to an Allen Bradley PLC. It seems to be a bit of a fallacy to present OPC as a monolithic item in your diagram, you are missing the entire complexity of the PLC (device side) connection.

Eng Noman I think there’s a way to apply AI system thru OPC to the PLC so the AI system can apply predictive maintenance to the field equipment based on PLC’s reports since the data is being gathered and transferred to the OPC so writing the correct AI algorithm will make it possible what do you think?

Modbus protocol would serve the same purpose of data exchange between different systems. Plz explain why to go for OPC protocol unless we have large data to exchange, Thank you

Unlike Modbus, OPC supports various data types, advanced data models, and interoperability across different platforms and vendors.
