I was diagnosed with PCOS 20 years ago at the age of 15. I've read A LOT and learned a lot about it over the years. (Especially after going through IVF.) I frequently hear/read the same things over and over about it in videos and articles. This is hands down the best explanation of it I've ever seen or read. There were even a couple of things that were clarified for me. Thanks!

This makes so much sense to me now. I was diagnosed with PCOS at 17 after never having a period but clearly having been through puberty via ultrasound and bloodwork. I always hear irregular periods as a symptom of PCOS, but I've never had a natural period, so something always seemed off to me. I've also always been thin with little acne and hair growth so I have been confused as to why I don't look like the typical PCOS patient despite having a rather "extreme" case according to my fertility doctor (he stopped counting my visible follicles at 80 because he just kept losing count). This video clears up so much for me! I'm pregnant now via IVF (retrieved 38 eggs, 20 5-day frozen, success on first FET) and now these crazy high numbers make so much more sense to me with the vault analogy. Thanks as always for all the education. ❤️

I always had irregular period (14-60day interval). Excessive arm hairs. Super high cholesterol since age 20. Even though i had ultrasound showing cysts, no one told me possibility of pcos. It took me 3 yrs to get pregnant and my doctors were saying i am just too stressed & need to do more “homework.” No single ultrasound ordered for those 3 years. By the time I miraculously had my child, they said “you see? It was your stress”. Then I got depression and anxiety gotten worse last few years and they said it is all mental. I started losing my hair, cholesterol >300, gained weight. They said i need paychotherapy so i did. Improved my anxiety but still something not right. Why am i always so tired? This is a fantastic video. You have a really calm air about you and a lovely, calming voice. I was just diagnosed today, after having stupidly thought of it as a fad disease for overweight people. On the bright side, no endometriosis. I have regained some of my old weight over the last couple of years and feel as if I kinda earned myself this diagnosis, but from what you say it sounds more like a predisposition. I still get medical office staff act almost indignant when I tell them I can't book in advance a progesterone blood test on day 2-4 or 21, kinda tough when your periods can be like 6-7 weeks apart. :D

Doctors kept saying it was mental or something of that nature. And I love kids. Me and my fiancé do want kids but after 5-7 years of marriage . I was just trying to explain to my sister on the phone about this. But she was like “just lose weight “ “ fix your diet “ I was telling it isn’t just that damn easy. After I got to really getting passionate , she says hold on and hangs up.

Hi Dr. Natalie. Thank you for your informative content and really clear explanation. I was just recently diagnosed with PCOS on the basis by an OB-GYN on the basis of: 1) irregular periods (typical cycle 38 days, irregular cycles up to 69 days long); 2) ultrasound of my ovaries. I have hormonal acne around my chin/ jaw during my period, (mild usually gone within 1-2 weeks), no abnormal hair growth, am of a normal weight, and have maintained my weight pretty consistently. I'm currently on day 55 of my cycle, which is likely an irregular PCOS cycle as well and I may not be ovulating. However, I'm still having the other symptoms of ovulation like changing discharge. I've done some reading, google and educating myself. But I think it's fair to say that since PCOS is a syndrome (and not a cause) there isn't a consensus among the medical community on how to explain the root cause or treat it. I have a few questions: - What is the role of progesterone in the body, apart from promoting pregnancy? Are there additional health benefits to progesterone that I am not getting since I'm not ovulating? - During irregular cycles, do PCOS patients ovulate at all? If not, then what causes the bleeding? On the flip side, during my 'regular' periods, is it safe to assume that I've ovulated? - How do I track a normal cycle (with ovulation) or an abnormal cycle (with no ovulation), apart from the length of the cycle? Are visible body indicators like discharge or BBT useful? - In your experience, are there 'mild' PCOS patients? My OB-GYN indicated that I was a mild case. What are the differences between mild or serious PCOS cases?
@NatalieCrawfordMD3 жыл бұрын
Progesterone 1) opposes estrogen to prevent endometrial cancer, and 2) supports a pregnancy. You may irregularly ovulate, you may not ovulate at all and just have breakthrough bleeding. If your periods are not regular and predictable, you cannot track with fertility awareness methods. Some doctors say "mild PCOS" for thin PCOS

I went to the doctor for irregular cycles. He didn't tell me what was going on during my first visit. It was my second visit that he nonchalantly told me well you have pcos. The proceeded to tell me that taking progesterone pills was the only option besides ivf. It devastated me. I wish I had someone like you close to me to go to for help.

I have this. Metformin and birth control help keep it under control. I was diagnosed with a hormone panel after my cycle stopped dead. My LH and FSH levels were flipped. One round of Clomid gave me my son. My daughter is 18 and my son is 13. I also have IR.

I'm waiting for my gynecologist to do the ultrasound, I already had my blood drawn and on my chart it does say I have high levels of insulin and other things, I've also gained alot of weight over 2-3 years. I feel so overwhelmed and sad, I know this isn't my fault but it feels like it is. If I ate better, regulated my emotions and just be a better person maybe I could've reversed the symptoms. I don't have an official diagnosis yet but I check all the boxes for PCOS. I'm so exhausted and drained of energy, I just feel so bad.

In your q&a video can you talk about weight loss when you have pcos? It is so hard to shed the weight. Plus birth control seems to have made me gain!

weight loss is a great idea to talk about, will add to the list.

Thank you SO MUCH for explaining PCOS without heavily leaning on the whole, "you're doomed to a life is ⚠️DIABETES⚠️ and ⚠️OBESITY⚠️" rhetoric!!! 🙏😭 (Though, that being said, I still loathe the whole "lean/thin PCOS" distinction because it always feels obnoxiously fat-shamey to me every time I hear about it, and as somebody who technically fits into that category it really makes me wonder if my BMI is part of the reason why it took 14 YEARS of asking why my periods were so irregular before one of my many doctors finally decided it was worth looking into... Like, I was 19 and underweight the first time I mentioned to my gynecologist that I wasn't getting them every month, or even every other month, yet somehow I only JUST got diagnosed last year at 33!!! I also didn't have visible "cysts" yet back then, and now I do because of how long I went untreated! 😤) It's been really difficult and confusing and scary trying to figure out what EXACTLY is wrong with me, so this video is very much appreciated. Thank you again for making this video thorough and easy to understand! You just helped ease a lot of my concerns. 💖

Very good explanation! I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 14 almost 15. Started birth control and metformin right away and been on the pill and metformin every since ( I’m 27 now). I was worried that I would never ovulate but I went off the pill when I was 26 for 6 months just to test my theory and woah! I had a period every month for the first time since I was 13! I was also ovulating (took ovulation tests and checked my temperature every morning). I was shocked! I was wondering was this ovulation due to the metformin and clean diet/ exercise but I’m also overweight. I’m not trying to get pregnant so I went back on the pill. Also off the pill I gained 20 pounds. Now I’m back on the pill and I started losing weight again. I’m so confused 🤷🏻♀️

Everyone is different making this disease so hard!! But yes, metformin and clean eating does help some people with ovulation (glad it does with you).

Wow! I'm learning that after all these years, I have been displaying many symptoms of this disorder but never knew a name for it. I have an appointment with my gyno next week, so I will request to be tested for this. I have many symptoms like crazy amount body hair on my face, stomach and butt, irregular periods, dark patches of skin on my armpits, fatigue, horrible anxiety( I'm on meds), and difficulty loosing weight. I also was recently diagnosed with HS ( Hidradenitis Supperativa). Are these conditions related? I can't wait to see if I have PCOS so I can start healing my body. Thank you for making this video 😄

Thank you so much for posting this! I was diagnosed with PCOS earlier this year and am still learning. You explained everything really and it's nice to have a video to come back to. I have 2 questions! 1.) If you are not ovulating, are you not releasing an egg? 2.) If I lose weight but am still not ovulating what kind of medication or treatment are available?

From the age of 16-35 ive gotten my period twice a year. God pregnant just fine. After 35 my period comes every month and comes so unbelievably heavy!! And goes for like a week or more. I told my doctor and she gave me an IUD that helps lessen the amount of flow thank God! She said it should carry me into menopause. I never have acne or hair growth though. And I always tell my doctor's about it but they just acted like it was no big deal.

16 years to late for me to get help with this, yet, I finally know what my problem was for all those decades! I always envied women with nice clear skin who knew when their period would arrive. I avoided birth control pills 😢 because I wanted to do things naturally without disrupting my body. And they were only ever offered to me once, when I was 19 in 1968. I guess medicine has changed a lot since then. Thank You for an excellent explanation!
