Gr8 vid. I just replace pcv valve on a 2001 maxima. It likely has never been replaced in 20 years. It’s a bit more involved when the pcv valve is soo brittle and it’s hose just snaps like plastic but worse is when it broke off it fell inside valve cover. Several hours later and new intake gaskets got the broken part out. Replaced pvc and it’s grommet on valve cover . Hopefully the oil consumption is reduced. Few days later developed p505 error. But that looked like it was a air leak on the intake hose which was cracked. Replaced that and it hasn’t come back. I may have to do the Nissan relearn procedure for throttle body. Also just changed oil so I can tell how much oil is being consumed 2001 maxima , 215k miles Oil filter 10w30 high mileage 1qt oil stabilizer substituted for oil At205 to help with rear main seal leak.

If blow-by pressure builds up in crankcase then why is pcv located on top of valve cover and not on crank-case in most cars? Does the the blow-by pressure travel freely from the crankcase into the top of the engine before needing to be vented?
@richardking60663 жыл бұрын
Yes, most definitely.
@tubetime392 жыл бұрын
Oil is needed up top there and there are oil holes or channels for the oil to drain back down to the oil pan/crankcase to be recirculated and the crankcase pressure can pass up through those holes in the engine block to the valve covers where it is easier to put the PCV valve.

Can a bad pcv valve stall car in hot temperatures ?

@@lendavidhart9710 Thanks for the info. Actually my car was stalling, loosing power ( mostly in hot summer days ), and if i parked in sun for few hrs then it wont start. Some mechanics said change fuel pump so i did but the problem won’t go away. But after some digging i replaced my pcv valve and boom , it was fixed. I checked my old pcv valve and it was damaged. It was stuck open. I tested it with 12v battery and found out it wont work. Was stuck open. Kinky note that if PCV valve is faulty/ not working, it will not throw any codes on OBD scanner.

I think I can see why idling would be affected by excess air, if the valve was stuck open, and allowing air into the manifold after the MAF. But I'm not sure I can see why more oil should flow out if the valve is stuck open, than when it is operating normally - ie opening all the time there is suction on the valve. (Through increased revs causing a lowering of pressure in the manifold after the valve body) !!
@rogerthat62212 жыл бұрын
The oil is consumed from the pressure control valve. Hi crankcase pressure will cause oil to push past the rings and through the vent which sends it in the intake to be burned
@commentcrafter41582 жыл бұрын
@@rogerthat6221 this question was not regarding a stuck closed pcv valve where pressure is allowed to build in the crank case. This question was regarding a stuck OPEN pcv valve where pressure does NOT build up in the crank case and does not force oil through the piston rings. The question was, with the pcv valve stuck OPEN, WHY is more oil pushed through the pcv valve and hose into the intake manifold? Also Why would this cause a vacume leak? Their is pressure in the crank case from "blow by", pushung exhaust gases into the intake manifold when the valve is functuining normally. So why why do you even need a one way valve there in the first place? Why not just have an open tube going into the intake maifold?
@commentcrafter41582 жыл бұрын
What would happen if you just had an open tube going into the intake manifold with the absence of a "one way" pcv valve in the system? My car does not have a MAF sensor, only a so called "boost sensor" located in the throttle body directly behind the butterfly valve that is the throttle. The boost sensor measures the air pressure of tbe intake passed the throttle body and then the computer probably also measures the intake temperature and it can use the readings to calculate how much fuel it need to add. It is kind of like a MAP sensor, which where used before they had MAF sensors. So my question is a good question right? I do not understand why there needs to be a one way valve there.
@tubetime392 жыл бұрын
R King my guess is that the higher flow of air takes a little more oil with it. Only a guess.
@withapulse2000 Жыл бұрын
@@commentcrafter4158 I was thinking exactly the same as you. The open tube design is the norm on older cars to vent crankcase gases and as long as the engine is venting the blow-by fumes that is all that matters surely?
@ronnorris78214 жыл бұрын
Please slow down your talking ,can't keep up with you.
@repsgsongs45623 жыл бұрын
What do you mean pcv valve stuck open, pcv vqlve is suppose to suck air in the engine from the intake manifold, if you remove the hose of a pcv valve your engine will die
@carlschroeder68112 жыл бұрын
PCV valves are metered, when fully open they are passing much less CFM than an open line. PCV valves are partially open at idle due to high vacuum, if it was stuck fully open at idle it would cause a rough idle, however nothing like a open line. At cruising speeds where there is less vacuum, the increased crankcase pressure overcomes the spring pressure and opens the valve.
@AnythingEverythingGh2 жыл бұрын
@@carlschroeder6811 is it a one way valve or two way ?
@carlschroeder68112 жыл бұрын
@@AnythingEverythingGh One way, flow is always from crankcase to intake.
@AnythingEverythingGh2 жыл бұрын
@@carlschroeder6811 Ok, so slight opening flow from the intake back to the crankcase is acceptable or IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, its a bad PCV rather?
@carlschroeder68112 жыл бұрын
@@AnythingEverythingGh I don't know how that would happen, the CC side always has more pressure than the intake side when engine is running. I suppose with the engine off, if you were to manually blow air through the PCV valve toward the CC as a test, a good clean valve would allow minimal air flow. Just replace the PCV and be done with it.
