I prefer coconut husk for a medium in certain things and pete moss for others based on ph needs. Pete moss has an acidity of 3-4 where coconut husk is actually more neutral at 5-6. Never underestimate the importance of ph in your plants.

Its great for water retention when added to a sandy or fast draining top soil. Non-peat compost is the opposite - it doesn't retai any moisture, epecially when used in open beds. Adding peat can be a godsend. But on the other hand, sticking plants straight into peat, or adding it to clay, can be a total disaster. Everything will either rot or set like concrete if you allow it to dry out. Its tragic that peat is being banned, because there is no comparable substitute and all that is really needed is for the customoer to be better educated about when to use it.

I fully agree more. Peat is like so many resources we gave available to us. If use properly it does great but it not it can ruin the whole recipe.

So we have a pond next to our house and they mow the lawn and it ends up running into the pond. Near the edges of the pond its dark, dark black but you can tell its grass clippings. Is this material peat moss if I take a bunch of it and dry it out in the sun?
@ewellacres
@ewellacres 9 ай бұрын
Peat moss or sphagnum peat moss is a particular type of moss or other plant materials that is covered in a marshy bog under wet conditions for an extended period to help prevent decomposition of the material. This helps to set up the material in a special way to be particularly good at water retention due to the type of plant it is. Grass clipping will help add carbon material to the soil. It will help with water retention in the soil and be beneficial in helping to building a stronger soil profile. However it is not peat moss. The best equivalent I can use in similarity would be adding wet straw or dry straw to your soil beds. Even though it's not peat moss, it's very beneficial and it's free two grat things I say go for it.

It’s not that hard bro, he gave you all the pros and cons now u have to add it to your plan. Growing in soil? It’ll be a great water retention addition, sterile, wont largely affect your ph and it’ll add microbiology, SO if you’ve recycled your soil a few grows make sure you have good aeration or you’ll get water logged. Adding coarse perlite would be good idea It’s sterile so you can make your own seed starter cubes Check the ph before y use as you would with every media. Using it in hydro? Add perlite assuming 60/40 ratio

so i have access to peat moss under a bunch of spruce trees, the green is on top, but under is really nice dark soil, about 6 inches down, could i use this in my soil for my garden?
@ewellacres
@ewellacres 9 ай бұрын
Yes this soil would be great for a garden. Price needles break down more slowly than other mulches. Which is fine just something to keep in mind. When you go to harvest the soil careful not to dig too aggressively. Cutting major big roots could potentially damage the spruce.

According to my research, the ph of peat moss is usually between 4.5-6.5. That is why it is recommended for blueberries, which like very acidic soil. If the peat moss is neutral, this is likely alkaline water seeping into it.
@ewellacres
@ewellacres 8 ай бұрын
The Ph for peat moss can very greatly based on ground water and also rainfall ph that therefore affects its. In my region of the US where I live my ground water and soil ph range on average from 7.5 to 8.2 as I live in a alkaline region. The joys in living in the the western desert of the US with low rainfall. You are correct with both of your assessments.

Peat moss is used to help with water retention. When pear moss first comes in a bag it is often dry and dusty. Adding water helps to not be so dry and blow away. I personally added compost and soil along with perlite and vermiculite to make a good potting soil mix. If you have soil in the ground and just want to have better retention then just strait Peat moss works well

Peat moss may be banned for sale in the us by 2024 so you might have to smuggle it in in a couple of years… sorry!
@ewellacres
@ewellacres 2 жыл бұрын
First the articles and announcements I have seen are to try and ban peat in the United Kingdom by 2024. NOT the United States by 2014. So get your facts right before you write. Second it was not to ban. It is an attempt by the green party of the uk to try and push for a voluntary ban by 2024 which has now been pushed for a hope of a voluntary ban by 2030. Meaning it is a educational campaign to try and gain support for this referendum sometime in the future. Good for them if they want to do it I wish them all the best. I live in the United States and so either way this wont affect me one bit. The peat moss I use comes from peat bogs in the US an primarily Canada which holds more then 25 percent of the worlds reserves. I am a gardener who is of the utmost thought process to be rooted in nature. Leave the world in a better place then when I got it. Having said that I am also a firm believer in that this world has an abundance of resources and as long as they are managed sustainably then I have no problem in living life to the fullest. Peat moss that I use is sourced from Canada and harvested and a lower rate then it is produced. Meaning it is harvested sustainable. If I can get coco coir harvested sustainable cool. I live in the cold northern rocky mountains of north America. I would rather get peat moss out of my own back yard that travels a very close distance reducing my carbon footprint on my own ground of earth. I see no point in buying a product grown in the south pacific that has been shipped half way around the world for me to use when I have a locally sourced product that is sustainably produced. I try and grow as locally sourced as possible. For me that is canadian peat moss for others it may very well be coco coir. If it works for you then I say roll with it. I do reccomend you check your spelling and facts though before you start typing. regardless thankyou for taking the time in watching my video it is much appreciated. I wish you the best.
@cacmang42
@cacmang42 2 жыл бұрын
@@ewellacres How do we calculate the carbon trade off between the amount of carbon peat moss bogs contain and the transport of coco coir? There's other variables I'm missing. I'm trying to navigate this myself and it ain't a simple answer. If you look at the images of destroying an ecosystem to mine peatmoss, it just doesn't look right to destroy an ecosystem for the gardening purpose. Locally made compost seems like the best option for most growing, but that doesn't solve the drainage "I do reccomend you check your spelling and facts though before you start typing. " this also comes across as very rude.
