Philosophical theology attempts to use the methodologies and conceptual resources of philosophers and apply them to theological issues.
The crucial point is that philosophical theologians, unlike those who are doing philosophy of religion, are prepared to accept the truth of crucial Christian beliefs at the outset. Some of these truths are often argued for, of course, but they are also sometimes taken as assumed premises in arguments. Philosophical theologians bring their faith commitments with them.
Philosophical theology, then, allows propositions concerning doctrines such as the Trinity or the incarnation to run through the rigor of philosophical scrutiny with tests of intelligibility and logical consistency. Moreover, the goal is to attain deeper understanding of Christian teaching. No sensible philosopher or theologian will deny the shroud of mystery that overhangs our thinking about God, and hence no sensible philosopher or theologian will strive for total comprehension or strive to remove all the mysteries. But the desire is to have faith seeking understanding.

Thank you for this video. I am taking a theology class in which I have to explain how philosophical theology and others are related and no matter what I read I was still not clear on philosophical theology. This video was clear and I look forward to watching more teachings. Again, thank you!

@kiwihans100 Isa 55:8,9 "My thoughts says the Lord are not like yours. And my ways are different to your ways. As high as the heavens are above the earth so my ways and thoughts are above yours". Its a great shame that men chose "men's thoughts" ( ie greek philosophy e.t.c) above "God's thoughts and adopted creeds & beliefs contrary to the word of God!

It was the bottom of a Dark Age the Greeks were Pagan but that does not mean they did not believe in God. They saw god everywhere in nature which before the Dark Age was a Goddess but there was also a transcendent God as the Logos. How God could be omnipresent everywhere but not in nature is a mystery that is not taken into account. Maybe if we get back to that again we will be friends with nature and it will be friends with us. That does not mean as some philosophers had it that God was confined to nature, but not transcendent to it, God as being all there is (omnipresent) being immanent and transcendent. As humans we tend to think in either/or terms. God and Nature (seen as Satan) reconciled is not impossible. ‘Spirit and Nature dancing together. Victory to Spirit, victory to Nature.’ Also the Old Testament was translated into Greek before Christ came so He would have access to that.

@@ALavin-en1kr So this is all human philosophy! Paul was aware of its inroads due to the Helenist culture of the educated classes! Look! face the fact that the 'God' of he Hebrews, that is the 'Shema' "Jehovah (YHWH) your God is One God', He is the Creator of all things and over all things" ( Deut 6:4). This was reppeated by Jesus (himmself a Jew!) in Mark 12; 29,30) Thus Nothing changed when Christ introduced us to 'Christianity'! Now though we could only come to God the Father through the one who laid down his life for us. As far as 'nature' & the 'universe' was concerned, since it is all the product OF God we should worship the one who created all things rather than the creation! ( See Romans 1:25). Paul rejected 'philosophy', both Jewish (Philo) and the teachings of aristotle & plato. See Col 2:8. Take 'Hades'. In Greek beiief it is a PLACE, a REALM. In the bible it is 'Sheol' the common GRAVE of all humans where there is no consciousness or activity. A place of rest and sleep until the resurrection! (Rev 20:13. Interested in 'Logos'? more if you like!
