Professor Tanya Monro gives us a crash course in photonics, the science of light. Starting with the basic physics of light, she then describes three important photonics revolutions:
1. The invention of the laser
2. The invention and use of optical fibres for telecommunications
3. Getting photons out of the fibre for sensing
Tanya also shares her passion for crossing the boundaries of science; bringing together different science disciplines to tackle real world problems.
This video was taken from The 2014 Science Inspiration, watched online by thousands of students around Australia.

This was so interesting and well explained! My only question is are the hole patterns in the fibres produced by the die process also? Can anyone help a brother??

Could photonic crystal fibre be used as an outer coating on fibreglass structures such as "boat hulls or as solar sheets " that could channel reflected light to a solar harvesting strip onto the mast or stern effectively creating a truely solar powered boat?

I have noticed some high end digital cameras (over 35 megapixels) are using some lenses designed for use on 35mm film cameras. Does anybody know if they have enough resolving power for some of these high to extreme high megapixel cameras.

So how do you prevent the loss of light from the fiber itself when you have a transparent core without having a permanent Plasmonic outer core that absorbs from 200 to 800 nanometers without Institute conversion of the outer core make up?
