How to use a crank with a wider rod journal than rod ?
You use the Piston Steering technique.
Using this technique you can use a 2.3L Diesel crank, w/ custom rods and pistons for a upgrade in displacement.
This method works well for race motors that often get torn back down regularly. Using it on a street motor is not recommended due to the stress and wear on the rings which can lead to blow by within a few hundred miles of hard use, especailly if you don't use a thicker head gasket.

Those custom pistons can tilt easily making the rod wandering on that wide journal. The standard pistons are clearly better suited for piston steering. Also: wider than nescessary big end journals make a crank weaker than nescessary. And: The diesel 2.3 crank has just one counterweight per cilinder and 2.4 crank has two making it the preferable design better suited for high revs. So I would prefer a standard 2.4 over the extra 89cc. It can do 150hp too without opening it.

Many of the reasons this was a one off. The issue is in the US 2.4L were never sold, and in the EU 2.4L are getting hard to come by. So I ended up with a lot of extra 2.3L Cranks I have been trying to come up with a way to use. The end result was creating custom rods for the 2.3L crank to fit a gas block, they are 135mm long and use a custom piston. Thats the recipe in Tinyvette.

@@charlesgoin8217 Ah, I understand. I am from Europe so other situation. 🙂 As long as you don't want to make a full race engine it will be fine I guess. Both my cousins had/have 2.4's from Omega A build in their Opel Ascona A and Vauxhall VX, both models are from the 70ties.

Never heard of piston steering so that was interesting. That 2.5 CIH will be awesome!

Lovely work. If you don't mind me asking. Why are you running such low compression ratio? I am building a 2.5 soon, block is getting bored atm. I am using the 2.4 crank. What crank are you using?

I was using a 2.3L Diesel crank, it was all about getting compression under 10:1 to run basic pump gas. Also the stock 2.4L pistons are -12cc so I was trying to keep to the same reciepe Opel had.

Sweet. I am using Wossener custom piston that have the correct valve cutouts to suit the Opel head. Big valve head etc. Custom cam etc, recipe hopefully getting me up around 240bhp. Do you have a supplier for the roller rockers?

@GarageNation353 those are always custom and limited run when done. I avoid them due to cost and performance to value. Just not worth it. My 2.5L gets close to 150HP and thats more than enough for a street car where reliability and dependability and streetability play a big factor. 50% increase over a stock 1.9L/2.0L seems to be where the price per HP grows exponentially.

Greetings from Bulgaria! Its interesting setup for cih engine. Can you tell from what machine is the pistons you use?

They are Custom for LS stroker motors. But not standard stock pistons. Same with the Rods. They are custom stroker rods from a Ford, and again not stock application.

I would say buy one.. and then you would get one ;) But as I only have one left to sell not going to hurt.. ;) Bore: 96.774mm - Stroke : 85mm - Head Volume : 55cc - Piston Volume : 12.5cc - Deck Clear : 0.5mm - Gasket Thickness - 0.8mm - Rod Length 135mm - Pin Height 29.6mm - Displacement - 2499.291 - Compression Ratio : 9.1:1 Perfect for US pump gas. Cam is a custom cam on my design. Similar to Isky OR-77. Have not dynoed the motor yet so no numbers. But given the stock 2.4L is 125/138 - There is no reason to think this motor with the larger valves, and bigger cam, lighter pistons, and heavier crank won't see about 150 HP and 170 Ft/Lbs easily.
