Plantation agriculture is a type of farming where a single crop (cash crop) is grown in large area (estate) mostly in tropical region for export purpose to gain the profit. Plantation agriculture is specialised economic activity.
Plantation agriculture is done in large area ( more than 40 hectare , according to Malaysia and some other countries law) . Large area is also known as estate that’s why plantation agriculture is also known as estate agriculture.
Major crops are grown in plantation agriculture- tea, coffee, rubber, cocoa, betel nut, betel leaf, oil palm,sugar cane,cashew nuts, cotton,coconut,banana etc.,
One of the earliest known examples of plantation agriculture is the Roman Empire known as a LATIFUNDIA.
Plantation agriculture began during colonial period. Thus the original plantation system was based on in European incursion into the Americas (colonial system).During Industrial Revolution Western Europe was required tropical and subtropical agricultural products as raw material on a large scale for their factories. In this way European developed plantation agriculture in their colonies.
In the nineteenth century plantation agriculture was introduced by the British in India.
Plantation agriculture has a number of characteristics features-
1) They are tropical or subtropical products.
2) it requires large area (estate) for cultivation.
3) Most of them prompt initial processing.
4) large capital investment- for roads, warehouses,processing,transportation and shipping etc.,
5) single crop specialisation.
6) mono cropping- it makes possible standardised practices and marketing channel.
7) cheap and vast labour.
8) it generates government income through charges and duties.
