The first time I was in Russia, it was a positive shock to see how much elderly people and women are respected, like in that they are given seats in the metro for example, that Russians are fundamentally polite and considerate people who respect others. And also that children, the existence of them are appreciated/cherished as well. The rest of the world could and should learn a lot from Russia and Russians. Whereas if you compare to finns... finns are pretty damn aggressive and hateful under the polite surface, and our silence or politeness is based on avoiding a murderous conflict with other finns. That's propably also part of the reason finns drink so much 'cuz we don't stand each others while sober. The respect/politeness here (in Suomi) is something people do to neighbours, as in not bothering them especially after the silent hours have started, so people will limit the noise they make in their own homes to not bother neighbours and if there are gatherings at homes they usually exit to pubs and to the streets to avoid bothering the neighbours. So finns can be pretty loud and drunk on the streets, but homes are for not partying that much, but keeping it quiet. And also, no finn would ever smoke on a corridor, 'cuz that's in the domain of people's private homes.

Great show! Молодец!)) Maybe you could do a show on the politeness or impoliteness of Ты vs Вы form? For example, how do the social rules change for a bar? Coffee shop? Gym? Church? Or what about age differences? Should an older person refer to a younger person they have just met as Ты? If you were my teacher, should I use Ты or Вы? Why?

And about тапочки, finns go barefoot or with socks indoors. One of the few good things about finnish things is quality floors. Some elderly people might wear some kind of tossut indoors, but mostly anything shoe-like things are "banned" from to be worn at homes. I love it how Russians have made тапочки into an art (you hardly find any in finnish stores, but) they are sold like everywhere and they are FLUFFY and CUTE.

the tradition about taking off gloves when shaking hands is very interesting. i wonder where it came from.. maybe because gloves might have some dirt from earlier work etc on them, and it would be a sign of respect that you don´t want to smear that onto another person´s bare hands? anyway. max, i want to thank you again for all those videos, and for your gift to talk in a way that is so good to understand, using everything from pantomime to signs to easy explanations. one tiny question: sometimes you play the guitar. do you know a good site to find russian songs + chords? anything from traditional to rock. (sorry, my russian is still way to bad to write in this language)

Yes, it is common to smile and say greetings to some stranger whom you find on the streets in most countries in Latin America and so it is very common in my country Guatemala too. As a matter of fact it is even impolite if you don't say at least some kind of greetings. This applies specially when you see humble people. This would not be so much like that in crowded places but still people do it some times as well.

I'm bringing a small bottle of our most famous Georgian Cognac to my Air b n B host in Serbia this week because they are so kind to me and pick me up from the bus station and take me home. I also know Serbians like drink like Georgians so I feel proud and comfortable doing this, I can not go empty-handed it is too rude for such nice hosts. Yes of course you take your dirty outside shoes off before you come inside. I don't know any country that would wear outside shoes inside. Do they do that in America or England??? Even China you take your shoes off!

МолодЕц is an exclamation like Good for you! МОлодец is the archaic word for 'guy', only used in fairytales. Молодой человек means literally "young man".

Пот вытираете об штаны, если вы мужчина, и непременно жмёте руку. Если вы женского пола - вы не должны жать руки никому. Не обязаны жать.

Еще в ту же тему, часто было такое что в туалете встречаешь знакомого, а руки у тебя грязные - не нужно стоять просто смотреть на него. А мыть руки это долго, скорее всего человек зашел тоже по делу. В этом случае просто жмешь его запястье, а он твоё (погуглите римское рукопожатие). По крайней мере там где я жил, так делали, потому что мужчине встретиться лицом к лицу и не пожать руку другому это сильное неуважение. Зимой тоже вариант такой. Хотя зимой довольно принято просто жать руку в перчатке, если зима действительно холодная (меньше -10).

Here if you are a woman and you meet someone (men or woman) most of the time you kiss them on the cheek. I think it's a bit invasive and uncomfortable. Most of the time I try to find ways to avoid it XD but sometimes you just can't escape it because people don't understand that you don't like doing it in general, they think you just don't like them. It's that or you are some kind of antisocial weirdo that hates every human on earth. По-разному. Я обычно обращаюсь "уважаемый, - ая". Кто-то говорит по-советски - товарищ. Но чаще люди делят по полу и возрасту: Молодой человек! Девушка! Женщина! Мужчина! Если ты имел в виду с фамилией, как в английском Mr. Smith, то мы так не говорим. Фамилия - только для 3-го лица. Либо полушутя, при обращении к своему супругу.

In Greece, it is not normal to give assistance to unknown girls outside in every day life who do need carry their heavy luggage. In public transport, it is a polite gesture to release/empty your seat for elderly, pregnant women and people with disabilities. It is not a MUST (mandatory) to pay for a guy to pay for his girlfriend expenses every time they go out together. Finally girls work equally as hard as men and the role of a woman today is not housewife or raising up the children home. Most women are self independent and in some cases they earn more money than men in Greece!
