What is postcard art?

Postcards are one of the best ways of exchanging collage art. Since I host several art exchanges that involve postcards collaged in a vintage style, I wanted to share some of the cards I've received, and provide some examples of embellishing on both sides of the cards.

The last time I mailed a postcard was for a test to see if my friend was getting my mail delivered from Florida to New York as the previous letters I mailed went missing. She got the postcard but my mail was apparently lost. I really enjoy your collage work and do collect postcards. Hoping you pick me. 😉

Along with several young people at my church, I am working toward getting an honor patch in postcards, and we have to make some of our own and send to friends and others. LOVE this video. Question: how do you keep all your postcards so flat!? Even after I dry mine under heavy books, they still want to curl, especially the ones that I make from food packaging boxes. No amount of flattening them seems to work. Help! Background: A fountain pen friend starting sending me her mail art postcards. I was gobsmacked by her creativity. After a while I decided to reciprocate. My first efforts were pitiful. I’ve never had an art class (not even in elementary school) so I was in over my head, not knowing the first thing about materials or glues or anything. We met up once at a mid-way point and she showed me a very basic step-by-step way to build an art postcard. I love writing letters and postcards so I’m enjoying playing with this combo of correspondence and art. Your videos are wonderfully helpful and inspiring, Margarete, to this newbie. I’m so glad I found your channel.

Thanks so much for watching, Cherry! I find that certain glues make postcards curl more. I'm using gluesticks, mostly, and don't have a lot of problems with curling.

It’s so funny this video poppe up as a suggestion today, I swear our devices do listen 😅 Today I made a collage master board on a 12x12 piece of scrapbook paper and cut it into 6 postcards. I finished decorating 4. It’s so fun!

Do you ever use the 4x6 index cards as the base for your postcard? They are much thinner today than they were back when I was a kid, so I wasn’t sure that they would be sturdy enough. I love this idea…small enough to not be overwhelming for those that are beginners (like me!). 😊

They are too thin on their own, Bobbi, but you could very easily double them up. That would be sufficient, I believe. If it still feels too thin to you, add a third.

Love these, Margarete. I've signed up for future swaps. Are the fronts of the postcards sealed? I'll check for tutuorials. I love the idea of using box/ packaging. I have a ton of cookie boxes where the back is already white. I can only use so many tags. LOL... Creative Blessings!

These are lovely pieces of art and very inspiring! I swap postcards and sell vintage & antique ones. Do you ever check the value of the old postcards before you use them? I've sold them up to $412 each.

No I don't check the value. It's very time consuming work to look up each card. I buy them cheaply and use them when they inspire me 🙂

I have been thinking about these, since seeing them on your blog. My questions are : do you use a special glue ? And do you glue the washi tape ?

Hi Jean, I mostly use gluestick, but just make sure I put plenty on the paper. After 24 hours I check it, just to be sure my papers have stayed on. If I'm attaching something like a photo, then I use double sided tape. Hope that helps.

Do you think we could call the process "mini Master board" or "mini collage "and just mail them as a post card. I like to make them dimensional and slipping them into a plastic sleeve and take to post office,they stamp them and then I close the sleeve

For the swap, you can create up to 4 cards and send them to me in an envelope. I will mail back the same number of cards back to you from different artists, all in one envelope. That's just a precaution to keep them all safe 😉

Is it ok to glue things on a postcard? It doesn't tear off in the mail?

It happens from time to time that something comes off, but you can do a pretty good job of making sure there is good glue coverage on your papers when you are attaching them. 24 hours, check to see if anything is loose.

Margarete, Are you happy with postcrossing? I've been interested in it for awhile. Not sure I want to give out such information to anywhere unknown so easily in the times we are living now. I do think it would be interesting for those who do journals to do this like a community of scrapbookers/journal makers..thoughts?

Your address never becomes public. They have figured out a very good system for keeping things private. I definitely trust the system. I wasn't really happy with the cards I got, so I stopped doing it. Still, if you haven't done it yet, do try.

Colour match cards. Sets are very expensive. Pantone sets the trends for new season colours. THE thing for designers to have. Beyond my budget though.
