I'm sad that I can find better professors on youtube than the ones I am paying for at my local community college. Thank you for actually teaching your class and not spending half the time talking about your personal life.

I appreciate the sentiment behind offering this to people online. One issue I have with the teaching style in this video is it puts on the onus on the students to teach themselves rather than the teacher holding the knowledge and explaining definitions, concepts and reasons. The teaching style seems to be simply asking students "what is public policy", "how does it work", who is involved? If you expect the students to know all of this in a introductory class then what is the purpose of the teacher? The whole point is having someone there to actually teach. The reason why there is silence after the questions he poses, is likely because they do not know, in which case it is the job of the teacher to tell them. I think handing students a textbook and then getting them to recite it on examination is not teaching.

Thanks for sharing your feedback. I'll note that these videos are almost a decade old and still providing value to many people, so that's encouraging. As to your thoughts on my approach, I agree it's important for teachers to engage audiences and not just expect them to do all the work themselves. Learning is a partnership IMO. Thankfully, I've grown as a teacher over the years, and my approach has evolved and improved since the recording of these videos. Either way, I'm glad so many people still find value in the content, regardless of how well or poor I was as a teacher back then. Cheers!

Is public policy transferable to different countries. Like if I learn it in America and work in Europe or vice versa, will it transfer?
@RobRaffety22 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question. I think the answer is "it depends." America's system of government is federalism, which includes separated powers - legislative, executive, and judicial. Many countries are parliamentary systems, which function quite differently. Also, given the rapid changes in technology and information dissemination, the policy process has evolved a lot since this lecture was recorded over 12 years ago. One area that merits further research and consideration is the role of social media on policymaking institutions, for instance. In any event, thanks for reaching out and good luck with you schooling!

Hello! i'd love to ask i'm planning to take public policy as my master,if my bachelor degree is international relations do you think public policy is a good choice?
@RobRaffety20 күн бұрын
Hey - I don't know enough about you to say whether or not an MPA is a good choice or not. That's a really deep and personal question with many factors to consider. To me, the driving question you must ask yourself is: What do I aspire to do with my life? That's the guiding question. If you want to work in or around the world of public policy, getting an MPA MIGHT be a worthwhile investment, but even that depends on what you're ultimate ambition is. I wouldn't recommend pursuing any formal education casually. Given the costs of time and money, I only recommend folks pursuing degrees when they have a real understanding of their motivations and intentions. Make sense? Good luck to you and thanks for reaching out! 😎

Career wise, what can you do in the public policy field? Where can you work in the private sector and public sector?
@RobRaffety2 жыл бұрын
The opportunities for employment with an MPA or MPP are fairly broad. In the public sector, you may pursue government roles at the local, state, or federal levels. The private sector job market for MPP or MPA could involve policy analysis or government affairs. Good luck!

Would a BA in public policy be better or political science or public administration ?
@RobRaffety10 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. The answer, I think, depends on what you ultimately want to do with your life. Public policy tends to focus on a particular field - energy/environment, education, transportation, agriculture, national security, etc. Political science covers many topics - rules & institutions, parties & movements, campaigns & elections, theories of various systems of government, and so forth. Public administration is related more to the management/implementation aspects of policy - how to carry out public laws, organization theory, bureaucracy, strategic planning & performance measurement and such. All three disciplines are related, and I think the utility of any of these degrees would be enhanced by a major or minor in economics. Good luck to you!
@BossChronicles10 жыл бұрын
Great insight I think all three disciplines require grad law school whether that be law school, M.P.P M.P.A or a Phd
@RobRaffety10 жыл бұрын
Shawn Afshar Again, it really depends on your career aspirations. Graduate work will help you in nearly every field, but it's most important to think through why you want the advanced degree and what value it offers you - how it helps you reach your goals, not just getting a degree for the sake of having extra letters at the end of your name. Good luck!

There are many, many Masters degree programs in public policy in the United States. My suggestion is to consider the specific policy issues that interest you, reach out to professors with proven track records in research and teaching, and talk with alumni of the program to gain insight over their experiences. Good luck!
