Ransomware is a very popular type of malicious code now and has a very peculiar operation: hijacks your files and asks for a monetary ransom.

One of the most concise, yet honest and to the point videos I have seen about ransomware. Suggestions are good, and thank god you mentioned backups. As long as you have that, a good anti-virus, proper knowledge on what a ransomware attack looks like and instant restore software like Shadow Defender or Rollback Rx installed, you will be fine.

Have more than one backup. I lost almost everything on my computer because the external hard drive failed as I was copying files from it to my new computer. I now make three backups, one of which is to an external drive.

My laptop got infected with the Cerber ransomware last month and I was wondering, if you connect an external hard drive to an infected laptop, will the hard drive get infected as well? And also, if I connect my Android phone to the infected laptop, can the ransomware make its way into my phone?
@TheManchineel
@TheManchineel 8 жыл бұрын
Well, Cerber is not for Android, but if it gets mounted as a drive letter on Windows, Cerber might be able to encrypt data on your phone. Cerber does not spread via USB devices, but it tries to encrypt their content.

Thanks for the response. I have been incredibly paranoid since losing important data on my phone is the last thing I would want to happen. For now, I am currently using SHAREit to transfer episodes of The Mentalist from my laptop to my phone because it's always better to be safe than sorry. :)

Y'know, when creating and securing my backups, I always thought: okay, these are fine backups, redundant, updated, universally compatible, but, if there was a virus on my computer that BADLY wanted to erase them, it would do it with no problem at all. But, I did not expect a so evil software to exist. I was on Mac OS X (a horrible operating system, but it was the only way to have a decent command line, like Linux and a discrete program availability, like Windows). My backups were made with copy 'n' paste and I had a Windows virtual machine that got infected with Teslacrypt. The folders with backups were shared with the VM and the virus encr'ed them all. I luckily had a Time Machine backup so I restored the most of the data. Demand was 2BTC (about 1K bucks). Now I have a custom Unix user with permission to open an HDD I keep in my drawer where I manually copy the data. My own user account, with different password, cannot even see the drive, so I'm safe. When I need to back something up, I log into the other account that has no access to Internet and any application except the ones I need to do the copy. I also have 2 Raid 3TB each HDDs for Time Machine, a couple of other partitions (Ubuntu, Windows) where I keep my data too, and backed up on another USB HDD, then I have another HDD hooked up to my Raspberry Pi that is accessible via the local network via FTP and a password, and contains another copy of my files. Oh, and I have my important stuff on my laptop, phone and Playstation 3 too.

Is Ransomeware 100% preventable? Or can even the best networks get it?

Even the best of networks can, just always have a good backup externally, and ransomware wont be a problem.
